This is the second part of my newest go-kart build series where I am going all out on power for this electric kart. It has 50kw or 70hp ish. I think there will be 2 more videos after this one but I'm not sure yet.

Impressive project! Just a little suggestion. Since you're not using the BMS for anything other then balancing, you have no actual over discharge protection. A quick and simple solution would be to use the P- as the negative source for your contactor. That way if the bms trips it will de-energize the contactor. That's how it is done on electric cars. You could also add a relay with its contacts in series with the charger input and its coil connected to your positive source and P- as the negative source, and you will have over charge protection as well. The only thing the BMS wouldn't be doing is over current/short circuit protection, but hey that's what fuses are for!

Great vid and awesome project! After i saw the 1st one it got me thinking into a project where i have 350cc on the back + the plan is to have front wheel power too with 1 or 2 motors like your setup + a smaller battery ,as the plan is to use them only to accelerate faster , then regen recharge the battery with them at cruising speeds. Would love to get some ideas! Cheers!

A123 26650 cells are powerful, but to get 70hp or 52kw you need a lot of amps. I have 34s10p from the same cells and voltage drop to 90v from 114v with 600A. So you need over 800A because your cells will go to 2,6v under load :)
@Kevin.OBrien44
@Kevin.OBrien44 3 жыл бұрын

@smoothbraindetainer
@smoothbraindetainer 2 жыл бұрын
@@Kevin.OBrien44 Let's assume BEST case scenario. 20Ah, with 20C max discharge, which at 80v (probably closer to 60v after voltage dip), is 32Kw (24Kw) before your batteries do not nice things. Of course that's assuming 100% efficiency. At the discharge rates that would require, and the added heat because of it, you'd be lucky to get 80% from the battery. At first I thought those were standard lithium batteries which have a discharge rate of about 1/10-1/20 those, so i'll admit my estimate was off by about that factor, but that's all *battery side*, you're still very much limited by the motor. If you've got a model for the motor that's the easiest way to tell here, but with the weight of that kart it's definitely not 40kw as you'd be competing with supercars for a 0-60. Get it on a dyno for part 3 if you can, it's a fun project but I think a little optimistic in terms of power.
@Kevin.OBrien44
@Kevin.OBrien44 2 жыл бұрын
@@smoothbraindetainer Well on the battery side these cells can do 50a continuous and 120a peak for 10s which would mean a peak output of 960a, which means my battery is not bottlenecking the power in any way. I have a clamp meter and measured ~450 amps only because I'm still woking on my gearing but when I get the right ratio the motor will pull more amps, making it closer to 40-50 kw. And yes it does have close power to weight ratio as a supercar weighing in at only 247 lbs. Again its top speed is limited to my gearing issue, but does have a 0-40 time of ~3 seconds. Im trying to get it on a dyno as well like u said

So I bought one of those A123 NEC Energy Solutions packs and was shocked that it tested at 98% capacity. What do you think is the max amperage you can pull from the pack? I know the cells are rated for 50A continuous but I think the bottleneck is going to be the nickel connecting the cells. I can’t see pulling 400A for any amount of time but these packs did come from electric buses. They were in big packs with 16 12S8P packs in series to make a 400 something volt battery the buses electric motors could work with. I guess at 400V even 100A is quite a bit of power.

yes it only rated for 260 continues but its 650 for one minute. you wouldn't even be able to put a 650 amp load on the motor for that long because after 3 seconds your already going 40 mph and the load on the motor has decreased to half of what it used to be. The continuous rating is less applicable to this scenario than the burst rating. the motor would also probably melt before the esc stops outputting 650 amps.

If your motor's rated for 48V why not just build a 48V battery pack? Is there any advantage to using a higher voltage battery pack?

@@rever4217 basically I did it to get more power. Power is voltage x amperage so increasing one of the 2 yields more power. The thing is though, when you increase amperage the motor quickly overheats. But when you increase voltage there is little downside because the extra voltage doesn’t heat up the motor. It only increases the rpm which could destroy the motor if it spins too fast but this is unlikely. So basically you can run a higher voltage with little risk but big gains in power. Especially with a motor like this
