Hello Laura, as an Austrian i like it to see how you enjoy our capital, but if you really want to know more about Austria and the people here, then you must go out of vienna. In Lower Austria you find more traditional places and more original austrian people. I showed my american relatives my home region and the castles, the culture and also the food and they where more impressed and understood the history of our country much more.

Isn't the Danube generally quite dirty, and covered in graffiti?

There is a small arm of the large Danube river aka Danube Kanal which runs close to the Inner City. The canal stone walls are available for graffiti artists who are encouraged by the city council! The main river flows further East & is the main shipping route as well as clean enough to permit public bathing beaches during the summer months!
