In this video, i first drop the valvebody to check screens that may be clogged causing the trans to sometimes not shift out of first gear. After finding one of the screens blocked, we got the ok to overhaul the transmission. I got word just the other day that the customer is very happy with the way the trans is working. Thanks for watching.

Great to see such expertise and competence in disassembly and assessment of fault. Thank you for this informative video. Amazed in had reverse at all... I have a 722.369 in '95 E320. It is rebuilt due to no / slow reverse; cause was reverse piston seal failure (tear) and the frictions were very thin. All seals, frictions and both bands replaced with MBZ parts; pump bushing too. Usually, the vehicle will not engage 1st or 2nd gear with the selector in "D" or "3". Requires the gear selector to be in position "2" to engage 1st or 2nd gear. On the rare occasion when it works properly (can drive from stop in selector "D" or "3") the trans has proper shift points and modulations. Governor pressure tested on the road affirms this. When "d" or "3" do not get low gears, the operating pressure is too low - around 50. Pressure may suddenly ramp up to 90 or above and then engage, or might bang-engage, let go as operating pressure drops to 50 or so. After starting out in gear selector 2, manually changing to 3 or D will give the proper upshifts and downshifts from 4-3-2 in "D" or 3-2 in "3" and D are fine. It won't start out again in 1st or 2nd gear, unless gear selector "2" is chosen again.. Only known problem I can recall on removal/rebuild: the the torque converter was bonded to the crank, so when I pulled the trans back, only the trans slid. weight of trans was hanging on the input shaft which was still in the converter hub, but at an odd angle. I am wondering about converter one-way clutch; or one of the other one-way clutches. I just pulled the valve body to look at. What would cause the operating pressure to suddenly drop, and suddenly rise the gear sector in "3" or "D"? Any advice, greatly appreciated.

My 722.3 in a 1995 E320 shifts with a HARD whiplash jerk only in these 2 scenarios: 1) going 20 mph, and give it half throttle to accelerate results in a HARD whiplash jerk kickdown. 2) When idling from a dead stop with no throttle, let off brake and let the car eventually pick up enough speed at idle to go into second gear in its own, the same HARD whiplash jerk. If I start from a dead stop with normal throttle the 1-2 and 2-3 and 3-4 are perfect. If I start from a dead stop with medium throttle the 1-2 and 2-3 and 3-4 are perfect. If from a dead stop I do full throttle, the 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 are perfect. If I'm going down the freeway and push the accelerator down a little to do that first "mini" kickdown, it does not jerk and is perfect. If on the freeway I push the pedal down hard (especially to click the button switch under the gas pedal) for a bigger kickdown, it does not clunk. The transmission mounts, flex discs, rear diff mounts are all new. It clunked even worse before those were replaced. If I turn down the modulator t-handle, I can get most of that to be better, but then I get 2-3 flare. I did the K1/K2 spring kit and the flare was better, so I turned the modulator t-handle "softer" again, but the HARD whiplash jerk is still there. ANY IDEAS?????????? Fluid and filter are new and valve body and all areas were very clean. 150k miles. Car is VERY well taken care of, all records, and is all original and everywhere I go people think I restored it. Your time is very appreciated!

@@GaryFerraro Can I ask you. A question I'm dealing with something similar on my 84 300D, but my transmissions shifts in all the gears but it does so rapidly, so by the time I'm going 30 mph I'm already in 4th gear. The shifts happen way to fast they're one on top of another "stacked shifts". Adjusting the Bowden cable wasn't much of a help. Car still shifts out of the 1-3 gear at 2000 rpm. Feels sluggish. Any idea what I should do next. I'm going to be looking at the Modulator below unplugging to see if this is a internal issue or vacuum. But anything you recommend me to look at?.

No shift from 1st is almost always lack of governor pressure. A lot of these boxes had plastic gears on the governor that break resulting in lack of shifting. A simple pressure check per the manual would've shown this.

You can tell when someone knows exactly what they're doing. The way he is working is seamless and with a purpose. He isn't figuring things out and trying to check what goes where.....every step is done in sequence, no pauses, no stutters, just straight through. This is amazing. My reverse is gone on my 722.3/4 and I need to replace/rebuild the B3(?) band. It will be my first time doing this. Do you have any advice or tips? It's just my reverse so I will only be doing that at this time. I know the adage of "while you're there" but since it's my first time even dropping a transmission and this is my daily driver, I'd prefer to only attempt the reverse first, then depending on how comfortable I feel or how that turns out, then I'd try other parts. I have a 1990 w201 and I have pretty maintained the car by myself since 2008. I learned by removing one part at a time, then replacing it. did that to pretty much the whole car and now I have a fair understanding of it. I got it at 174xxx miles in 2005 and I'm now at about 468xxx. I do my own scheduled maintenance and enjoy the work, so any help from you is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for watching Lawerance, No reverse is very common, K3 clutch probably flaked off. To access this clutch, the pump, K1 clutch drum and the front band(B1) will have to be removed, the piston for the band has a huge spring, see if you can get around taking the piston out. Where are you located?

I'm located in southern California. Yes, I had this is once before about 3 years ago, but I had a used transmission put in for $600. I was familiar with the symptom when I put the car in reverse and it would engage about 2 seconds after and over time it got weaker and weaker until I could no longer back out of a slope.

I just got my 722.315 rebuilt to compliment the OM617 turbo 5 cylinder engine I rebuilt. The trans was working great until I took it on a 70 mile freeway drive for the first time. I kept it at around 55-60 mph, when I got back home the trans started acting up. When I start out, the trans shifts through all gears within about 2 seconds. I can still shift manually using the shifter. The trans only has 200 miles since it was rebuilt, and it is under warranty but I don't like taking my car to shops. Is there any advice you could give me?

@@GaryFerraro I'm near Glendale (Queens). Main issue is shifts tend to flare, especially 3-4 in the low throttle range. I can't tell if 2-3 is flaring or slipping slightly - it feels like the engine brakes a bit when 2-3 happens. The shifts are acceptably firm at high throttle though. 1-2 is very firm. I've tuned the VCV pressure bleed and adjusted modulation pressure a little higher than 42 psi (~44) to try to compensate for the flaring to get it to the state it's in now. I'm about ready to try the Superior spring kit, but a rebuild might not be out of the question.

Great video, thanks for sharing. I recently changed my valve body on my ’82 300TD MB and have run into some problems that I thought you might be able to help. The car has a 722.3 transmission with 170K miles on it and because it was flaring I sat out to clean the valve body (VB). I replaced the springs with those from a kit. During re-assembly it slipped my hand and hit the floor. One of the bore holes was damaged and I had to order a used one. Although this second VB was from a 722.3 transmission, it had slight differences with my old one. I think it was from a later model 722.3. Now after putting everything back together and making all the vacuum and Bowden cable adjustments, it would not shift beyond the first gear. Do you happen to have any idea what could be wrong or what could be done. What options do you think I have. The engine, the exterior and the interior are all good and I hate to give up on it. Thanks, Myron
