I’m so glad you actually know what a ssk is. You would be surprised on how many stylist are clueless...and If anymore has a newborn out there with curly hair take a close look. They have single strand knots too and we don’t give newborn trims because we know it’s healthy. Ssk doesn’t equal damage so like you said cut it or leave it- Love your content and your live streams!

I get get fewer ssks and splits since I added grease my regimen, but I still get them. I trim them off when I get tired of feeling them or when they cause tangles. But you have a good point in that I may be combing my hair too roughly on wash day. I will try a gentler approach and see what happens. Thanks!

That pop you mentioned is the reason knots form I’ve experienced it and what happened to me was my hair would wrap around the teeth of the comb and the pull from detangling causing it to pop and makes the hair spring up around itself causing another knot. I’m taking a break from using combs these days and doing the smoothing method that you mentioned in another video really has helped me get rid of tangles by using oil and water while wearing gloves the knots melt away because I think the ends were dry anyway which were causing knots and tangles and splits. I have to keep them soft at all times and by doing this--my hair doesn’t get splits or knots as frequently as before along with not using combs. 😊 You should come out with a book on your hair care techniques I would totally buy it!

This is such a good point. I’m so determined to have the comb glide through like I see in so many videos but it’s probably doing me more harm than good. I had trimmed my hair a couple months again and my ends were nice and smooth and then I wore my hair out and detangled it etc and the knots came back. It just seems inevitable

I truly believe it’s caused in the shower. when people wash their hair they forget that it can tangle up just as much and it’s not susceptible to getting tingled when wet. I dentangle in the shower and twist my hair up and i don’t get so much. The little ones i do get i usually find after my hair dries and i come through it. It’s pretty frustrating but i believe twisting and stretching you hair helps a lot

Very extra super duper fine tightly coiled hair here! Lol! Friction! I keep my hair stretched and protected in flat twists and scarves. I moisturise twice daily. Sealing my ends only helps. Moisture goes in the midlengths and doesn't escape from the ends.

@Unsweetened Black Tea water. OK. Lol! Any liquid moisture spray where the main ingredient is water. Aphogee make two that I use and I use sometimes a watery detangler from my Trichologist or Cantu coil calm detangler. In the winter I use a lot of Aloe Vera juice and rose water because it has no protein or glycerin or oils or butters.

I needed this video because my hair be sounding like pop rocks with all the popping it do. I have bought several combs/brushes and detanglers for my hair I guess I have to detangle in really small sections although I don’t use large sections to detangler 🤔 I guess my hair is just prone to that because of the kinkiness of my hair.

It could be a couple things going on... Are you keeping up with deep conditioning to help improve your hair's elasticity and strength? Just try to finger detangle your hair a bit more before you grab your hair tools.
@marleyhill34
@marleyhill34 4 жыл бұрын
@@kimberlytownsend7015 something is up for sure. Nixing knots, tangles and breakage. 1. Detangle weekly. The longer you leave it the more tangled it will be. 2. Pre poo with oil and conditioner or pre made pre poo. And finger detangle with the pre poo. 3. Wash and condition in plaits or braids to stop hair re-tangling. 4 As Narada said deep moisture condition weekly with heat from steam cap, hot towel, steamer or hooded dryer. 5. I don't detangle wet hair with condition but you can try it and see if it works. 6. Close and smooth hair strand cuticle with cold water rinse. 7. Dry hair in a t-shirt or microfiber towel being careful not to rub as this roughs up the cuticle again. Just squeeze and press. 8 layer products by LCO/LOC method on damp hair. 9. Seperate, section and clip hair into one inch parting and then smooth and feel for knots with fingers first then go in with a wide tooth comb and/or brush starting at the ends and working to the roots slowly. I lose the least hair this way and get out any shed hair tangles. 10. Keep hair stretched, moisturised and protected to keep moisture in. Dry hair equals rough friction hair with raised cuticle equals tangles and knots. Good luck! Your tools are probably OK. My trichologists don't use any special tools apart from a wide toothed comb from the beauty supply.

AfrikanHairGod actually I haven’t been super deep conditioning I just use a regular 5 minute rinse out conditioner. I don’t use any type of co-wash and can’t braid or do any style on my hair I keep it simple maybe that’s the reason why my hair is breaking. The longer my hair grow the more difficult it is to manage and the more it breaks off and matte.

My hair is so long but there are knots ALL OVER the ends of my hair up to the middle. I just went to the salon the lady gave me a trim cut off a lot of the knots off, ( I lost 4 inches of length) but there are still 100's more knots. I'm thinking about just cutting my hair up to my neck. All my length will be gone. But i have no other way to get rid of the knots. :(

Thank you for sharing. I used to get a lot of single strand knots, and it was super frustrating. I also felt like my hair wasn't growing/retaining length after all the years I'd spent being natural, partly because I was always trimming/cutting my hair to get rid of the SSKs. I decided to give it one more try before cutting it all off and starting again and changed up my regimen. I stopped using tools and now only finger detangle, I started splitting my hair into six sections instead of four to get more control, and I switched up my products and how I use them. It's only been about 8 weeks, don't know if that's really enough time or if I'm getting happy too quickly, but I definitely see a difference in the health of my hair and in the amount of SSKs. As you were giving the advice, I was like YES!! I think I'm on the right track.
@marleyhill34

I can't finger detangle as I can't feel all of my hair it is so extra fine. So I detangle once a week with a wide tooth seamless comb. Then once every 4 to 6 weeks, after my protein treatment, I use the wet brush for fine and thin hair and the tangle teezer for fine and fragile hair. I also keep my hair flat twisted to keep moisture in, protect the ends and stretch the hair so it can't coil back on itself or its neighbouring strands. If I finger detangle only, I never get most of the tangles out and then it knots and locks even more! 🙈

@marleyhill34

@@chenzsosmith289 my trichologist was telling me to put it in two braids but I found I would only braid the outside hair meanwhile the inside hair was not stretched enough. My hair is in one inch parting flat twists and I can't feel as many knots as when I used two braids. I also moisturise my hair in twists every day and keep it wrapped in a silk or satin scarf. I undid one flat twist today to see if the internal hair was moisturised and I could not feel any knots on that twist. I deep condition weekly. When I detangle my hair I do the same one inch parting that I use to flat twists. So I have 9 flat twists going straight back in the front and 4 flat twists going straight down in the back. I spray my leave-ins on in the morning and squeeze in the cream leave-in in the evening. I don't want to undo my twists every night because my hair can't withstand all that manipulation in winter. I also steam and sleep in a shower cap every other night. I also get trims. Last year it was every 6 weeks and this year it is every 16 weeks. Putting silicone, oil, butter or grease on the ends reduces the friction but you still need to clarify and shampoo and get that off regularly. Hope that helps. Winter is a pain and ruins hair too much.

@@marleyhill34 do you have coily hair? Do you think the fine fragile type tangle tweezer is better than the thick and curly type for your hair? On the one hand, the latter is for thick hair not fine but it seems to easily get through my hair, I'm just not sure its causes unnecessary damage. At the same time, I wonder if the fine and fragile type can handle the afro textured hair.
@marleyhill34
@marleyhill34 4 жыл бұрын
@@iateyursandwiches I have type extra super duper fine 4c coily kinky Afro-Caribbean textured hair. I actually have a lot of strands on my head so density is high. The fine and fragile tangle teezer goes through my hair easily but that might be because my hair strands are fine. If I feel like I'm not getting all the tangles out I use 1 inch sections. If that seems like a lot of work, I only use the tangle teezer once every 4-6 weeks. I find normal KZfaqr don't section the hair enough but cosmetologists/hairstylists/hair dressers always use small sections. The teeth in the fine and fragile one are more flexible and I'm more concerned with breakage than a super smooth style.

I've started to finger detangle my medium length, high density hair in order to reduce my single strand knots, but it's been so damn time consuming. Since my hair is still on the shorter side of long and is very healthy, it shrinks as it dries and wraps around itself.. I'm hoping I can train my hair to clump so I get a lot less tangling. I'm sure growing out my layers would help too.

I have been natural since my junior year of college( 3-4 years natural). I also got my hair dyed(it's back to it's natural color except for a few faint strands). I haven't been to the salon since and I've been finger detangling . My hair has grown to shoulder blade length(in natural state) and is thicker than before. However,when I use a comb I find that I get a lot of those knots and pop sounds bc I don't have the patience with the comb. I will definitely take your tips and work it into my routine, especially your moisturizing natural hair video! That video has really shown me my mistakes!! I've been clipping my ends after twisting my hair in sections. Would doing this over time prohibit the knots?Thank you for all the knowledge and patience to really explain hair care!!

Some people have said that high porosity hair needs more frequent protein treatments since it's prone to knotting from raised/uneven cuticles but I think it's more useful for fine hair. As you've said before, fine hair is vulnerable to heavy damage to cuticle from everyday manipulation which can lead to knots. Do you think it could be useful to do protein treatments or reconstructors more often if you have fine hair, like say once a month? And a real protein treatment once or twice a year(if you used heat)? I personally do have problems with breakage even when using my hands. I guess it could also just be due to dryness too though.

Nope. Not the denman for detangling. It usually has too many teeth that are not flexible enough. I use a seamless wide tooth comb once a week and then a tangle teezer for fine and fragile hair once every 4-6 weeks. . I do not detangle my hair wet. I finger detangle before I pre-poo my hair. Then I shampoo, apply deep conditioners and/or treatments do the LCO method and then detangle damp hair with a wide tooth comb. Also hold the ends so they can't snap or pop back. Start at the ends and go towards the root gently. If you hit a snag put down the comb or gentling brush and work it out with you fingers. No popping sounds! No friction! Lubricate every thing.
