Thank-you so much for this video! We have a Gearmore flail mower which comes with blades. I absolutely love it! Originally I wanted the hammer version (which Gearmore calls a shredder rather than a mower). Unfortunately the Gearmore shredder requires more power than my little BX can handle. Now that I have seen your video, I will check into if I can replace the blades with hammers!

Thanks for showing us the underneath. I am very impressed with this piece of equipment. For a small tractor to be able to power it with the height set so low that you basically tilling is impressive. If I can find a dealer in the north east US I will likely buy one. As far as the height setting, you can certainly change it on the mower itself, or as someone else mentioned, lengthen the top link a little. Be careful when you legthen the top link. If you Raise the front of the mower too much it is VERY dangerous. I have a hydraulic top link and I use it to make height adjustments while mowing. Last fall I was mowing a field with the front way up to try to miss a rock. I hit a rock anyway and a knife broke off and hit me in the head. Luckily it bounced off a few things before it hit me and I didn't get hurt, or dead. I did learn not to pick the front up too high. That being said, if any of you have remote hydraulics and don't have a hydraulic top link, I would highly recommend it.

Good morning dp! Thanks for sharing this. I see that the unit has a row of chains hanging along the front edge to stop debris and I can see that if it is raised too much that the chains will also lift from the ground level. Great advice and very happy you were not injured badly. When I adjust the height later this week I will certainly keep that in mind and make sure not to extend the upper control arm too much. Thanks again! Have a good one.

Great video GP. Thanks for taking the time to explain things. Your videos are very helpful Flail mowers are much safer, relatively speaking, as compared to bush hogs. They are less prone to throw debris. I believe that is why they are used by road departments on the side of highways
@GPOutdoors

Thanks very much Hank. I understand that as well. I know it drops the debris for sure. Also much easier to maneuver the tractor since it sits so tight in behind as opposed to my finish mower or a rotary mower which sticks out far behind the tractor.

Hi GP, I live with the rocks too. When I first had my house built about 27 years ago, I started to till up a piece of ground for a garden. Ended up building a stone wall! I would highly recommend using that flail on all your property. It's better than a rotary mower, aka brush hog, all most as good as a finish mower, and it does it all without the added expense of keeping two mowers. I used to drive a tractor with 12 feet of using flails. We used the knives. The knives flatten out when the rotor comes up to speed. It's just a pain to replace the knives. But it's so seldom done. Flails all the way!

Now that sums up the basic types of mowers reallly well. Very well presented GP Yup them hammers are taking a beating but still keep on ticking...some are dinged up real good Cost of operating a flail is higher than a bush hog but the finish cut is way better and that is the compromise...it is all about compromises....

You bet. I didn't do it much justice having it set so low, so kind of my fault but very impressed that it withstood the abuse so well. I will raise it up this week before cutting the grass. But I agree, it cuts really well overall. And you can certainly grind the hammers pretty easily so long as you don't alter the weight of them too much. Cheers and hope this helped a bit. Have a great week!

Then the only solution I see to get rid of them is a BACKHOE !!! Lol! Thanks GP! I have actually had a flail mower for over 2 years now, but not a tractor, lol, bought one on ebay with a bad motor and finding a replacement has been a nightmare. Anywho, this week I finally unwrapped my crated flail mower, and did a test mow, then today 'mowed' some rough stuff. I have hammers pre-installed. I am not impressed with the 'yard' cut, but I am very impressed with how it handles the tough stuff. Previously I had asked about the runners tearing up the yard. The short answer is that they don't, the long answer is....as long as you don't do a tight turn, they definitely rip the turf up in that situation (scooting sideways). Previously someone asked if you could mow in reverse.....I sort of do, but with the implement lifted, then set it down when the thorns reach the cab area. :) Thanks for your time, making these videos, I find them very helpful. :)

Hey thanks 10essee! 2 years? Now, that's what I call thinking ahead! LOL. Appreciate you sharing. It helps a lot. I am going to try cutting the lawn shortly to see how it does and will check on the skid shoes to see if or when it digs in. I have been doing the same thing for reverse. I am told we shouldn't mow in reverse so I lift , go backwards then drop as you do. We will see how it does on the front lawn. I find the same thing as you - it cuts the heavy stuff really well. Thanks again and all the best!

10essee, I was thinking the same thing about a week ago recognizing this unit is tearing up a lot of debris and hitting rocks along the way. Although it has kept things down , every time I hear it hit a rock , I immediately turn my head away by reflex. You never know. I think safety glasses makes sense. Better safe then sorry. Thanks for sharing. Safety glasses from now on. Thanks my friend! Some good advice for all. :)

Oh man, I just read dp pmm's comment, hit in the head with a hammer sounds no fun at all. For the record I set my unit to the highest setting (4 inches?), so perhaps that is why I have more than expected debris emission. My safety glasses double as sun glasses, but I should probably toss a cleared lensed pair in my attached tool box for extreme shade or after sunset work... One last thing, my unit has two holes for the top link, the top one is just a hole, but the bottom one is slotted to allow the unit to follow the ground contour. Does the BECO have that?

Yes he made a great point there. So definitely need to be mindful of lifting the front too high. Good question about the second hole. Yes it has one and I didn't realize it but I think you might be right. It might be for that reason. I will check it out. Thanks 10!

Hi Gp so how you been doing ? Yeah them flail mowers take a beating .I'm on my third set of hammers after 27 years on my orchard model flail mower. At most the body takes some beating and the odd nick in the hammers but there very durable machines. I was thinking of buying a landpride bush hog for my next tractor but decided to go with the flail mower instead just makes more scene for my line of work. You right also about the finishing cuts of the mowers.I use flail mower for brush only and finishing mower for grass only.

LOL! Thanks Bill. A quick suggestion for you to consider: When you get it, put it on the tractor and 1) extend your top link all the way out (many subs mentioned that it works best if the unit is slightly tilted backwards), it does. 2) check to make sure the skid shoes are not rubbing on the ground and adjust as needed, 3) check height of hammers from the ground and adjust the roller height to give you the cutting height you want, 4) don't forget to cut your PTO shaft to length before attaching it and running the PTO drive ( there is a little instruction booklet), and 5) when you start cutting you will know how fast or slow you should go based on the sound from the mower. It runs smooth and consistent but if you start cutting thick stuff while driving too fast, you will hear the change in sound and know to slow down. Hard to explain, but you will see what I mean. Cheers and all the best!

GP Outdoors: There are 2 types of flail mowers as well. A coarse and fine cut. Another point to bring up is the different blade tip speed between mowers. Finish mowers usually have blade tip speed above 10,000 fps. Whereas rotary mowers are half that.
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info Andrew. In this case would the knives provide the "fine" cut and the hammers I put on it provide the "coarse" cut option?
@andrewbrenneman9592
@andrewbrenneman9592 5 жыл бұрын
GP Outdoors, yeah. The more knives (as I understand) are considered fine cut. The hammers would be the coarse cut. I have the hammers on my flail. And it makes fields look "better manicured". Might want to lengthen the top link a bit to ride more on the roller and keep the skid plates off the ground. Or adjust the skid plates down to keep the knives out of the dirt.

GP, love watching the videos you post. You provide such a great resource for us new tractor owners! I have a Kubota B2601 and I’m considering a FHM flail mower. I see you evaluated the heavy duty 48”, which I believe has a 22 PTO HP min and the 2601 has 19.5. Do I have my specs right on the mower, and if so, did you ever feel like you were short on power? Doesn’t look as if that was the case. I’ve been looking at the medium duty as a result at 20 HP min, but have enough brush to warrant the heavy duty if I can compromise on the HP gap. Thanks!
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Hey good day. Thanks for the good questions. I never felt underpowered with it at all to be honest. I have never tried the FHM but also might offer you include the Del Morino flails as well ( Neil Messicks did some good videos on them) and they look very well engineered and built. When I buy anything for the tractor I also like to include service and parts availability in my research. I think sometimes paying a little more for something that you can more easily gets parts or service/warranty on sometimes is an important consideration. Also, if you are thinking about some of the offset models, pass them by your dealer before you buy. When you swing a heavy implement out to the sides of the 3 point hitch, it changes the weight and where energy or force is being applied/carried by the hitch. I almost tried one until I was told it would put too much strain on the 3 point of my B2601, because the weight was offset on the hitch far too much. Good luck with your search and decision. Flails are a great mower choice, I think, when you have brush and grass/lawn on the property. Plus I love the "striped" look it leaves when you cut the grass. All the best!
@TheCreinking
@TheCreinking 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick reply. I appreciate the advice. I agree that the offset versions appear a bit unstable on a small machine and probably generate a twist on the 3 point that it may not have been engineered to accommodate.

Great video, I would worry about starting a fire when hitting rocks, I'll bet seeing that working at night might make some people rethink the possibility of fire. Also the comments on the balance of the hammers is over thinking the environment that the hammers have to work in, it's constantly out of balance, it's made to work that way hitting stumps and rocks, thinking that a half ounce weight difference between one hammer or another is going to make a difference is just worrying over something to small to worry about.

@GPOutdoors

Hey thanks and good morning Ian. Yes, absolutely. I spoke with Kevin at farmer's and he said he can certainly grind them but not constantly. The rotor is weighted so if you grind enough off to change the weight of the hammer too much, it may impact the balance of the rotor. But for sure I could grind them a few times I think. A flail won't leave a finished look like a finish mower, but it will do better in thicker grass than a finish mower. A rotary mower will take the thickest of grass & brush, but isn't going to leave a beautiful finished look. The speed of blades needs to be addressed. A rotary mower is the SLOWEST in RPM, then the flail in middle and finish mower at top of blade speed. I prefer a flail due to small size, and general use.

Normally hang off the right side and has bars 5', 7', or 9'. Newer models can cut at 25-45° BELOW HORIZONTAL and upto 90° straight up. Disc bine is basically a swather used in farming. My tractors main PTO HP is 16.3 with a overall tractor HP of 21HP. Should I purchase a Flail mower under 16 PTO HP to give me a little more room or will the 16 PTO HP work fine. I've also seen models available with minimum requirements of 15 PTO HP; however, at a price of about 1600 more Canadian. Love your show and Be Well.

I have a B2650 and want to get a flail mower but I was looking at them on the woodmaxx website they’re supposed to be really nice flail mowers but the smallest one they offer is 54 inch! And the manual states that 48 inches is the maximum size for a flail for some reason. Even though the 54 works with 18+ Hp It’s odd because the manual says that you can use a 72 inch finish mower! But only 48 flail
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Good morning Ben. Thanks for the comment. Yes, my manual is similar. I think it's because of how the weight is distributed differently between the finish mower - which is pulled behind it on wheels and has a wider area that the weight is distributed over, versus the flail which has a concentrated weight and it rides on a roller and the 3 point. I have a 60" finish mower, as you probably saw and I used the 48" flail. It was heavy. I would recommend not getting anything bigger than the 48 inch for your 2650. Good luck and all the best!

Yikes! Those hammers are really taking a beating! They seem to be holding up pretty well though. I wonder how often you’d have to replace them.. I find it interesting how the mounts for the knives/hammers spiral around the cylindrical drum, and aren’t just in rows. I wonder if that’s due to the capacity of the mower or just to use less hammers or knives, or what... These BECO products seem to be holding up really well. I think I’ll have to look into them a bit more. Do you know what country BECO is from? I’d be interested to know who’s behind these things. Cool video, glad that you’re getting a lot of use out of the flail mower. Take care.

Morning Jackson. yes they sure are and very happy with the build of it. I have definitely had that unit set way too low - a lot of those hammers had earth caked all over them so it has been digging into the ground a lot. And the rocks don't help either. But nothing broken. I will adjust the height on it before I use it again so it will be cutting the vegetation instead of the ground. :)) I believe it is made in China. Have a good one and talk gain soon!

The reason for the spiral placement is to get complete cutting coverage while maintaining balance.

@GPOutdoors

Morning. with the B2601 I would not go any bigger than the 48" for sure. For most implements I go as wide as 60" but this unit is pretty heavy - the tractor pulls it great etc but when you lift it off the ground, you can feel the front end get light when you don't have the FEL on. Hope that helps. Cheers!

My place is at least as rocky as yours, I’ll bet. I’m trying to decide on a new bush hog or a flail mower right now. With rocky ground being the main consideration is a flail mower the best compromise? I just bought a new Mahindra 4550, I know, it’s a brand new antique tractor. I needed the lift capacity and wanted a heavy machine. But back to the main question. Since prices seem somewhat comparable now, would I be better served by a 72” cut flail or a 72” rotary considering rocks and heavy brush?
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tazmo - congrats on the tractor! If you have a lot of area that needs a nice cut ( lawn) then, personally, I would go with the flail for sure, and ensure in really big rocky areas, you lift it up as you traverse it. If you have very little lawn area then personally, I would get a brush hog. It will do the job on fields, and thicket and brush, trails etc without the need for a groomed look. Neither one likes rocks.. :)) Good luck!

Again, I enjoy your videos!! Question- I don't see where you mention what width Flail mower that you are using on your B2601? Here in the states I'm looking at the Betstco one which I think is the same as Beco in Canada.. Looking at the 48" but would really like to see if my JD 2025r could handle the 53" one that would be slightly wider than the tractor.. The 48" says 20hp and the 53" says 22hp required. The JD is rated at 18 hp PTO but I think that's quite a bit underrated.. Any thoughts? Gerry
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Good evening Gerrard! Thanks for the kind comment. Happy you asked. BETSTCO and BECO are not the same company actually. I have noticed the alot of different manufacturers seem to have very similar designs. The flail I was using is a 48" unit. It is rated for PTO HP of 16 -30HP so it worked great with the B2601 (19.5 PTO HP). Heavy unit as I recall ( I think around 470 lbs I think). I think if your tractor specs support a 53", then I would think you should be ok. Not sure how the higher PTO HP requirement would effect the quality. The BECO unit I had was equipped with a slip clutch if I remember correctly. I wish I could help further but good luck with it! Cheers!

If you have raised the height I would be curious how it did? I want to get one but every vidieos I have watched shows them scalping the ground, which is ok for trails in the woods, but I’m gonna be cutting water ways on the farm and I need grass.
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Morning Darren. It works very well. There is another video ( can't remember the number of it now) where I cut my grass with it. My mistake was that I did not extend the upper control arm far enough. I learned as I used it, that the flail rests on the roller on the back so when you extend the upper control arm on your 3 point, it raises the mower, and when you shorten the upper control link, it lowers the mower. There are also 2 adjustment positions ( I believe) on the mower itself. i liked the flail mower very much but did not need both the flail and a finish mower and since most of my open area was grass, I went with the finish but if I had lots of areas with brush and thicket etc, then I would have chosen the flail for sure. Good luck and all the best!

Good morning Dustin. I would need the 60" for sure. The 2610 is about 55" wide so the mower would need to be wider. Also it has much more lift capacity on the 3 point than the old B2601. Thanks - great question!

I am wondering if you can set the height up so it cuts the grass, not mulches it? It looks like you are cutting it so low you are mixing dirt with the cut grass. I have a brush hog but am looking into getting a flail mower but want to cut the field grass not mulch it so low.

GP, you've had enough experience running this with your 2601. In your opinion, would the 2601 handle 6 more inches on each side (60" flail) than the 48" you used, if treated gently and run with care? I sure appreciate it!

Ok dumb question. Can/should you resharpen the hammers or is replacing the only solution? Also as odd as this is to say. The first few mowings will be the worst on your cutter. After you scalp the ground a few time it will be low enough that your shouldn't hit it anymore.
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Good day Jeremy. Actually that makes sense so thanks. Yes, you can grind them but not a lot. The rotor is balanced based on the hammers and associated weight so you can certainly grind the burs etc off the end but if you continually grind them over and over and alter the weight too much, then that will throw off the balance on the rotor. But yes certainly can give them a grind now and then as I understand it. Thanks for the comments!
@DukeOfTwist
@DukeOfTwist 5 жыл бұрын
Just an additional note; when replacing hammers in flail mowers its highly recommended to do so "in pairs" ie: there are two 180 degrees apart on the shaft. This maintains the rotating mass in balance, otherwise an unbalanced shaft will quickly damaged the bearings.

Hi GP outdoors. I was trying to find a flail mower here in New Brunswick and I'm not having a lot of luck especially with my size of Semi compact tractor. Most places here don't carry this for Semi compacts because there's just not much of a demand. When searching availability in Canada I came across Farmers Equipment Sales LTD in Ontario and noticed that they had a link to one your video regarding one of their products which was the BECO flail mower. I was thinking of purchasing one from them because it seems like they will ship to New Brunswick. I'm looking at their smaller model the 48 inch flail mower by BECO which I think will work fine on my tractor which is the BobCat CT 1021, 21 HP semi compact tractor with a rear PTO of 16.3 HP. I realize that this video is around 4 years old and I was hoping you might be able to shed some light along with your thoughts after having this mower now for 4 years. I have emailed Farmers Equipment sales and I'm still awaiting their response regarding shipping and a few other questions regarding parts availability.

Hey good evening Daniel! Thanks for the enquiry. Kevin and his dad (Dave) are really kind, down to earth folks - can't find someone better to deal with. I had the flail mower to test out for a summer - I loved it - I had the hammers on it ( I did several videos of it in different scenarios - forest trails, property and grass, saplings etc. It was a well built unit. I had the 48" as well. I am not familiar with your tractor but my tractor had 19.5 hP on the PTO (25 HP engine) and it ran great - I cannot remember what the minimum HP requirement is for the flail mower they have but I am sure they will tell you. I would have bought a flail but I have mainly grass and very little need to mow brush and thicket - otherwise I would for sure have the flail. Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions - Cheers!
