Hello, Bret - - this is a great introduction for Edison Disc phonograph owners - some of which -like me - aren't yet brave enough to completely remove our motors. Is it possible to grease the vertical spindle shaft without removing the complete motor? My C19 sounds like constant "pitter patter" once the turntable begins to revolve. I checked the governor springs for breakage, etc. but the seem to be intact and running evenly. Having watched perhaps every video re. Edison machines, I have noticed that you utilize Park Tool grease and Green Grease often for the same gears - on videos. I was wondering whether you have a preference. Also, which grease do you prefer for lubrication of mainsprings being newly installed? It looks like you use Green Grease but it's hard to tell simply by viewing.

I prefer Green Grease because it’s a lot tackier. Don’t grease the vertical spindle shaft, just drip a little sewing machine oil on it. You can grease where the main spring barrel drive gear hits the spindle shaft.

At 6:07 you mention the engagement lever. You said it drops the horn so it will track. No. That is incorrect. Sure, the horn drops, but that's not what makes the arm and reproducer move to track the record. There is a feed comb underneath and the feed comb gear. When you pull the lever up it engages the feed comb into the feed comb gear and that's what makes the tracking work, not the horn.

I was told that the oil cup may not work because a century of sitting may have dried any oil in the tubes and oil won't go where it's supposed to. I guess the tubes could be cleaned out with a long skinny pipe cleaner? Marc.
@Chungustav
@Chungustav 4 жыл бұрын
There should be an "inner-tube sized" piece of felt at the very end when the oils touches the part so it doesn't actually drip onto the part it supposed to be lubricating. You can feel the ends first after adding oil and if they are wet you are fine and shouldn't need to fool with cleaning the tunes.

I have a c150 that the needle arm just stopped lifting up. When you push the handle down it tries to lift up then it sounds like it slips . Any suggestions

There are two screws on the top of the horn that hold the lift lever in place. Go to my videos and look up how to adjust/set the reproducer height on an Edison disc and it will show you how to correct it.

I just picked up an Edison H19. It is cranked up, but will not operate. I can turn the governor mechanism by hand, but it is very hard to turn. I’ve oiled it as shown in your video and it has freed up some. It is still too stiff you turn on its own. Any ideas of what else I can try?

Are the two yokes hitting the back of the flywheel? It might be the speed control knob is screwed down all the way.
@hpwdtm

@@1974hurt you are spot on! The speed control was locked down tight. Everything is spinning freely now. Which has uncovered another issue. The player does not seem to be spinning flat and true. Mostly no sound until the record comes around to a high point and I get a split second of sound before the record drops lower than the stylus will reach. The floating part of the tone arm is riding mostly at the bottom of its travel range, not centered in its travel area.

@@hpwdtm go to my KZfaq page and type in “how to balance a turntable”, it’s video 77 I believe. If watching the video doesn’t help then send me a video of the machine playing to dyslexicgeniushurt@gmail.com I should be able to watch it and figure out what the problem is

@@1974hurt thank you! I watched the video, added rubber pieces and adjusted the horn down some and the machine is playing now. The needle is going off center as it tracks across the record. It starts skipping by the close the the end of a record. Like it’s running out of travel room from side to side. Also most of the sound seems to be coming from the top, record area and not out of the horn. Any ideas or videos on the issues? Thanks again for all the help!

We just got a C250 from the family and our crank only turns roughly 3 turns either way and then it is stuck. Any tips on this? Also with the crank it does not rotate the discs. The family does not know what has happened so we’re blind going into this

I recently received an Edison diamond disc chippendale console. Some was just throwing it out and was the lucky one to get it. The cabinet appeared to be garbage but the parts seemed good. When I got it home I found that only like 2 parts were missing. The reproducer and and the front grill. I’m having trouble with the motor however. When I crank the handle the spindle moves but the spring will not hold tension. Any suggestions?

You didn't explain why you don't like the volume control. I think that most of us would agree that they are useless but removing it is just making the machine incomplete. It doesn't make any sense to take it out just because you don't like it.
@1974hurt

Removing it gives me better volume because the sound waves dont have to go around the ball.
