Roger Bolliger's famous Trans-Am. It started life as a fairly rare, original 1971 455 H.O. Firebird and was then modified, inspired by the Jerry Titus Firebird that competed in the 1970 Trans Am series. Instead of building an accurate clone, true to the original, things got a little out of hand though.
Powered by a massive 8.1L (496ci) Pontiac engine, this beast is said to pump out up to 730 horsepower at 7000 RPM which on some tracks have taken it to a top speed of 311kph (193mph). With a mind-blowing 860Nm of torque (634 ft lbs) it gets up there rather quickly too. The bodywork is all custom made and the incredibly big wheel arches, housing those massive slicks, look incredible.
I filmed the car at the V8 only edition of the Colmore YTCC during Jack's Racing Day and during the Tabac Classic GP at TT-Circuit Assen, 2023. These events I think were pretty rare occasions though as normally the car competes in the Histo Cup which takes place mostly on tracks nearing the border between Western-, Eastern-, and Southern Europe. Unfortunately the car was not without some issues/ incidents meaning I didn't get to film it anywhere near as much as I would have liked, so here's to hoping Roger will bless my local track with another visit in 2024!

One of the best looking Trans Am body styles...EVER.... and the sound... well that's the icing on the cake. I wish you could do an up close walk around with some of the cars you feature. I realize that means pit passes....but this TA is worth a longer look. Thanks for your excellent sound

When filming multiple series at an event it can be hard to be in the right place at the right time for pit action of all the cars I’m trying to cover but it’s definitely something I’m looking to improve upon. Thank you for the kind words and feedback :)

its mind boggling how a car with an 8.1L v8 can corner like that. It's as if all that weight was never there to begin with 🤣

Haha yeah, the incredibly meaty slicks are doing a great job compensating.

With aluminum heads, intake and other weight savings applied,, the weight is far less of an issue than one might think. Pontiac only used one block size for most of it's engines and they weren't exceedingly heavy. If you are careful with weight savings and get the engine as far back as possible the weight distribution isn't too bad. The trick is getting all that torque to the road.

push rod, alloy block V8s can be quite light for it's displacement. For example a LS V8 7l is lighter than a 2JZ R6 3l. Plus the engine sitting behind the front axle which also helps in cornering.

I would bet even a c6 or c7 6.2 corvette engine in the z06 or zr1 with blower and intercoolers adds a lot to the front weight

Thank you! I filmed this with my trusty, 11 year old Canon Legria HF R306. For next year I have upgraded to a modern camera (2023 Legria G70) which will be a massive improvement, haha.

Really just the the typical sound of a crossplane crankshaft V8 race engine regardless of manufacturer.

nope. if you were really into american v8s, youd tell the difference. a big block mopar, chevy, pontiac, etc do not sound the same.

Big blocks and small block sound different for sure .. small blocks like a 5.0 ford and 5.7 Chevy also sound different. That’s just to name a few .

Sit in the stands at any Nascar race and with a blindfold on for a lap you will not be able to distinguish between a Chevy, Ford, or Toyota race engine.

Agreed. I love my classic European race cars to bits but there's just something about fully race-prepped old school American muscle cars that's on another level.

I’m not fully up to speed on the history that links Chevy and Pontiac together but this engine is an aluminium Butler Performance 496 Pontiac block. Maybe I’m missing the joke but I don’t think it shares much with Chevy 😅

@AlwinSV i guess most people just assume a gm car is running a chevy motor, pontiac didn't go fully chevy powered until after 79. But i believe 71 was the first year pontiac did offer the Olds 402 as an option for the firebird and lemans lineup. The Trans am and gto did stay pontiac powered however. Imo pontiac was the best engine out of the gm lineup and the best sounding too, pontiac and Cadillac make better race engines imo too, same weight and size as a chevy small block while being able to run 460 cubes and above.
