Security footage shows a 74-year-old Ohio woman robbing a bank at gunpoint on April 19 after she lost her life savings to scammers. Bodycam footage shows Fairfield police confronting Ann Mayers after she left the credit union with her bag of cash. Law&Crime’s Sierra Gillespie details why Mayers went to such great lengths after falling victim to an online scam.

I explained to her a long time ago when these calls started that they are scams to get her money, and to NEVER EVER talk to these people, just hang up on them. Imagine working your whole life... sacrificing time, sacrificing a potential life partner/relationship, sacrificing your health, working most of the hours you're awake for decades, saving little by little that entire time, planning for the future, making sure you have enough set aside to pay for medical, to have a roof, food, some choices especially in your retirement years, and then to have it all taken in a keyboard stoke. That's terrifying and sad. I feel really bad for the lady. Banks should have some sort of procedure in place when people start to make weird withdrawals or tons of money at once, or something. And ways to get the money back. It's really sad.

Whilst i feel sorry for her she put those bank staff in fear for their lives by demanding money at gunpoint, she deserves some form of punishment.

Feel terrible for her. To be scammed of everything has to be a deep wound to bare. I can't imagine just how bad that would feel. The shame, embarrassment, sense of loss and financial stress of it all would certainly be overwhelming.

This breaks my heart. There should be a way to flag an account when unusual activity is going on. A call to the customer should be made to warn them in case they are being scammed. What the account holder does after that is on them.

I think the train being so damn close to her house should be a mitigating factor, allowing her to serve less time or even probation becaise it'd drive any normal person crazy. Problem is she'd probably get better sleep in prison.

This has got to be the friendliest, nicest arrest of a bank robber ever. As a side not I will say you left the most important part out! I wanted to know about the scam. As soon as I turned 62 I started getting those scam emails and now it’s several texts a day. I’ve tried ignoring them, sending STOP messages and giving them a strongly worded response. Nothing has worked.

Don’t respond. Some scam texts/emails have malware that links to your keystrokes and/or phone info….

I’ve learned that when a text says to send “STOP” that’s how they figure out if the number they texted is valid. Just report the messages as spam, don’t interact with them at all. The same goes for emails. All of those messages are automated anyway.

Don’t forget to keep your heart out of the situation I have had to learn about it from personal experience they will say anything about whatever will get them closer to your wallet remember that all they really want in the end of it people just like Ann are left without a clue of what happened so by removing your feelings they won’t be able to get you to vulnerable state of mind so stay safe out there and remember that it your money they won’t nothing else

This is a cautionary tale. I know a man who fell victim to online scammers trying to get a piece of tail after he got diagnosed with near end stage cancer last summer. They cleaned him out and he is now living motel room to motel room until the cancer takes him, and he is living without treatment. The only difference between this man and the unfortunate woman in the video is that she had a momentary lapse of judgment as a consequence of being a victim and has unfortunately ruined the rest of her life. Don't ever give anybody you do not know money online. Gary is probably about 10 years her Junior :(

This case even made it into our biggest daily newspaper today. The police in our country wouldn't have treated the lady so politely, I think it was very appropriate. But robbing a bank is still a very bad idea

I was thrown in the back of a police car head first after being dragged down 32 concrete steps all for having called the cops for emotional support, I was not under arrest or had any warrants. Even if I did, the way I was abused and traumatized by the cops still haunts me 4 years later because the cops were far too aggressive with me. I was unarmed so they didn't need to even lay a hand on me especially since I wasn't going to jail. I wasn't going to jail yet they still acted like I was under arrest. And that wasn't the only incident when cops abused me that lead to injuries and/ or trauma. I understand PTSD better now than ever because of what I went through. I hope that your family will be able to find peace after your wife was robbed at gun point, I am terrified by the thought of being in such harms way. Many 🙏 and 🕊️
