Its interesting that if Beattie had not been wracked by injuries if he might have played for England in the late 1970s and early 1980s..Derek Statham as left back, Beattie would have been 29 by the 1982 world cup so its inconceivable..

I was at this match. The big thing was that Paul Mariner's signing was supposed to signal the end of Trevor Whymark's career. So the outcome was brilliant, because the new boy got on the scoresheet, but Whymark scored 4 with his feet - and he was only supposed to be good in the air! It was a fabulous game.

I was in the North Stand and Beattie's goal would have taken our heads off if it hadn't been stopped by the net. Mariner and Whymark were something special - especially together (check our Whymark's second!) but Beattie was the best ever.

Question - why were the away fans in the “home” section for this game?

Remember this day like it was yesterday, got in the ground 2 hours before kick off & stood with my brother on a home made box so I could see over the wall in the west stand! Pretty sure it was Paul Mariner's home debut. My overriding memory of this game was Kevin Beattie's performance, he could have played in any position he was that good. I feel lucky to have seen him in his prime.

These were two brilliant teams to watch, Ipswich were stacked with talent, should have won a lot more.Talbot, Beattie, Wark, Marriner, Gates, Muhren, Thiessen. Cooper was a great goalkeeper, amazing at stopping penalties

I couldn’t make it to Portman Road that day but was excited by the arrival of Paul Mariner and when l saw him on tv it was the answer to a prayer. A No. 9 who could do all the things you want a No. 9 to do. Thankyou Bobby for what you gave us. May whoever sacked you at Newcastle rot in eternal hell.

What a performance from Ipswich. Absolutely relentless and clinical with an unstoppable hunger, determination and drive and tons of skill on a terrible surface. And some superb goals. The amount of work that each player is getting through here. Poor WBA didn't know what day it was. Every time one of their players gets the ball, he's hounded out of it by Ipswich shirts. This is simply a different sport to the game we call football now. It's absolutely unrecognisable now. The level of commitment on show here (from both teams, even West Brom when they were 4 or 5 down) makes modern players look thoroughly dis-interested and lazy. Modern football is basically a non-contact sport by comparison.

I think they never recovered when Bobby Robson departed to take the England job. He built a truly magnificent team piece by piece - had an unerring eye for signing exactly the right player for each position, and went on to pick them again for England. It was a sad day for Ipswich when he became manager of England.

Helluva hiding U Baggies....walloped and thrashed senseless, after the fifth went in, there was a big gap on the left-hand terrace as Albion fans understandably had had enough of the torture and then made the long trip home, tails between their legs. UTV SOTB
