76 D100 318 Four Barrel Swap - SP2P + Quadrajet = TORQUE!

In this video we four barrel swap a 76 D100 318 using a discontinued Edelbrock S.P.2-P. intake and a remanufactured Quadrajet carburetor.
The engine is a stock low compression 318 with the stock cam advanced 4 degrees, Mopar Perfrormance orange ignition box, Accel super stock coil, slightly increased spark plug gap, lightweight Magnum starter, single exhaust with a decent Y pipe and no muffler or cat, KYB Gas Adjust shocks front and rear and a 3.55 ratio open rear axle.

This vid has been in the works for a long time and I really wanted to end it with a better conclusion and some better driving clips but my friend is really busy and it's hard for us to find time to work on the truck so I just posted what I have on it so far. Hope you guys enjoy!

I drove one all through my high school days, my dad bought it for me and I think he really bought it for himself because he loved working on it, and I loved driving it!!!! @MrJohn613 Budget Builds I know they can be difficult to work with compared to Holleys and such but the epic throttle response from the stock Qjet on my 84 Trans Am made me a big fan of them. I knew if those tiny 200 CFM primaries could make my 305 shred one tire it should have a similar effect on my friends 318. I even got him to buy the same spacer I used on the TA. I've got an '83 Dodge pickup ,318,4 bbl,4 speed overdrive i've been working on since new & i can tell you,if you haven't already taken the distributor apart & put in a pair of lighter (weaker) advance springs you can get at summitt,jegs etc,,you can do that & really unlock MUCH more performance. You're already off to a great start,imo. Those light weight distributor advance springs compliment the cam advance 4 degrees you've already done.Typical smog era mopar distributors didn't fully advance timing till about 3200 RPM. You want full advance in by about 2000-2500 rpm.The light advance springs will do that. Check with timing light before & after.

Looks like a fun truck! Cool that you were able to help your buddy improve power and make the engine look good on a budget. LOL about the lawn mower filter. I like the new Satellite intro!

@East Bay Hounds Thanks man, glad you like the new intro! The truck really is a lot of fun to drive now. It had no balls when he first got it but now its faster/torquier than a lot of other little basic V8's I have messed with. It's faster than my weak 350 4 barrel K5 and it takes off way faster than the Green Machine did when it had the little 273 V8 and 2.76 gear. The bed is super heavy but this intake, carb and cam combo make it feel like nothing. Its actually faster with the 4 barrel and bed than it was with the 2 barrel and no bed! @East Bay Hounds I got a couple new vids up now, you might find one of them interesting since I think you have an Edelbrock on the Fairlane. One of my other YT friends found out if they turned notifications off and then back on that they started working again so maybe that will help.

Really enjoyed your video! I had a 76 Dodge cargo van with a 318 & Carter Q jet. 727 trans. The mechanic put in a manual choke, which I liked quite a bit. Ran it for several years in the Chicago area. I put Bosch Platinum Plus spark plugs in it (that was back in the 80s), and was surprised when I replaced them many miles later how they were still in great shape. My dream vehicle now is to have the same engine & trans, but I read so many things about the Q jet carb that are confusing. I guess the Carter was superior ... and from what I understand, the earlier version without all the smog stuff that is rebuilt and modded for reliability, etc is the way to go. Let me know what you think about that ...

The SP2P... the most hated intake on the internet. I'm building a Chevy 305 with one (and a Quadrajet) for torque (and fuel economy). I hope I get similar results.

@imaouima Awesome, good luck with it! That's probably the best carb for this intake so if everything is set up properly then it should be a great combo for low end grunt and fuel economy just like this.

I bought one of these manifolds and teamed it up with a 500cfm Carter carb, jetted it 2 stages lower and went to 273 rear gears out back. All this into a 74 camaro that gets 17 city/26 mpg freeway. If you build for low end response and look hard at improving your ignition you should get similar results. I also like you got a 305 sbc, the best daily driver v8 in existence IMO. hope you do great!

@@gkauto1959 That's awesome. Mine's finished but it's just holding down the garage floor until I finish the bodywork on the Nova. Did you make any other changes to the engine (cam, compression etc)?

@@imaouima just get the smallest afb carb that edelbrock makes, and after jetting it 2 stages lean, made sure ignition was good with NGK platinum plugs and fresh plug wires. Any good HEI distributor will do the trick, along frequent (2000 mi oil changes) oil and filter swaps. As long as you are easy on the throttle and install a vacuum gauge to ensure high vacuum while you drive you should get similar numbers, along with hi way gearing out back should be no problem for a 305 to get these numbers!

@@gkauto1959 I'm actually using a Q-jet, but will drop the primary jets like you suggest. I put in a Summit SUM-1101 cam (very mild), otherwise the engine is stock. I'll update once it's in the car and running.

Are there numbers on an edelbrock so I can see if I have this intake? It's a 1969 d100 318 4 spd and there was an edel Brock carb on it when I bought it. I would like to put A QJ on it. Do have a link to the exact spacer (Spreadbor I'm assuming) and timing advance kit?

@Eric J Yes but testing wasn't very thorough and unfortunately he pulled the Qjet off for an Edelbrock that doesn't get anywhere near as good economy or power. The one economy test he did with the Qjet figured it was getting just a tad over 20 MPG and he didn't believe it but I did. We were gonna test it again but never did before he swapped to Edelbrock over a simple overflow issue.

@@jeffjohnon4223 If you want optimal fuel mileage and performance 500 CFM with *mechanical secondaries* is too much for a stock low compression small block in a 4000 pound automatic truck. With an open spacer you'd get all 500 CFM right off idle at wide open throttle and with a 4 hole you'd get 250 CFM on each cylinder bank which is almost exactly the same size as the entire stock two barrel . . . except the engine only sees half of the stock two barrel on each bank at about 130 CFM. With a 750 CFM Qjet you have 200 CFM primaries and when using a 4 hole spacer like we did each bank only sees 100 of that CFM at wide open throttle until the big 550 CFM secondaries open by vacuum later in the revs when needed. Having smaller primaries not only gives you better mileage but it also gives you better low end response and the Qjet has the massive secondaries to boot. Honestly it's a really hard carb to beat for a street vehicle.

@@jeffjohnon4223 I just realized the AVS2 is a spreadbore vacuum secondary so you are right that would be a good carb for this setup. I had no idea Edelbrock started making vacuum secondary carbs. I can't wait to check one out!
THE 318 SMALL BLOCK IS BETTER THAN THE 340!! HERE IS WHY!
