Being a child in the US in the early day of Group 5 these cars we rarely seen except for the occasional magazine in some nondescript book store. I love having the opportunity to see these cars at speed! Cheers to you all!

Ifan is back and brings some information. The Maroon Porsche is 1983 911 Turbo Spezial aka 930/935 TAG Turbo, after Mclaren/Porsche engine deal which is bankrolled by Mansour Ojjeh. He commissioned this car to Porsche newly established Exklusiv Department and the car is in fact the first project by that department, It has flatnose front, custom spoiler and rear fender, engine tuned to 375hp and bespoke interrior. Ojjeh used the car in continental Europe before selling it to British friend, later the car moves to states but now has returned to Europe. The car behind the road car 930 is the infamous Porsche 935/78 known as Moby Dick after the white primer long tail spoiler that the car has during shakedown that resemble a Whale. Developed by Porsche to dominate Le Mans and even battling periods prototype, the Moby Dick featured updated bodywork, engine, suspension without breaking the car Homologation requirement. Which is quite a feat regarding many modifications the car has. The car is chassis 006 which races 4 times in period including outing at Le Mans that result in 8th position overall. The car is in Porsche Museum collection ever since and only appear in selected events such as 76 MM The 1980 924 Carrera GTP is one of the 3 924 Carrera GTP that Porsche entered in Le Mans that year, as the car had not yet been homologated, the car is run under Prototype class. For each car Porsche decided to paint each car in the color of their driver’s nationality. Germany, United Kingdom and United States. This car is the chassis 002 and being painted with UK scheme, The only factory Porsche to ever raced in British flag. Originally the car was supposed to be driven by Derek Bell, Andy Rouse and Tony Dron. But last minute injury befell one of the American teams car and Derek Bell is moved to fulfill that spot, leaving Dron and Rouse to drive in that year Le Mans. The car finished 12th overall and after that the car was used as development hack. In 2016 however Porsche GB acquires this car from Porsche Museum and restored it to the condition of today. Next up is the Green Gosser Beer 1976 BMW 3.5 CSL, 1 out of 4 build that year and 1 out of 3 survivor with one is used as BMW Art Car. The car is pressed into factory Schnitzer team and driven mostly by Dieter Quester and painted in Gosser Beer livery that sponsored Quester in most of his racing career. It participated in Le Mans that year although with DNF, it did won in Nurburgring and Oesterrich. The car is sold to privateer next year and after that the car was exported to Indonesia, where it won races locally there until the car was abandoned and found by current owner in Jakarta. He took the car back with him and restored it to running condition, the car even still had the original engine. The owner still actively campaigned this CSL all over Europe. The beautiful Martini livered car is Lancia Beta Montecarlo Turbo, despite the namesake. The car has tubular spaceframe chassis and only share parts such as grille from the road car, because this is essentially a “Silhouette” race car. Lancia bid to counter almighty Porsche 935 with the help from Abarth resulted 1,4 litre Turbo engine with lightwright 800kg boy. It was proven successful and even bag second overall in Le Mans behind 935. Despite the similarity, the car is not related to 037 but nevertheless Beta Montecarlo paved away from Abarth to developed the 037 that shares similarities with Beta Montecarlo. The car in 76 MM was 4th Beta Montecarlo built in 1980, this car won 6 hours of Mugello that year and driven by names like Eddie Cheever, the car then passed on to Italian privateer team and found its way into private collection in Italy where the car resides. The Road Atlanta livery suggest you looking at one of Whittington Brother’s 1978 Porsche 935/77A. As I previously mentioned, 935 is Porsche bid on sportscar racing following the success of 911 Turbo RSR that convinces Porsche to make a Turbo 911 based on 930 Turbo road car. Starting from 1977 Porsche would offered 935 to privateer teams and based on 1976 works car with small changes notably the usage of 2 smaller KKK turbo to make the car more reliable and less turbo lag. This car chassis 0016 was originally owned by Reinhold Joest of Joest racing fame, he entering it in 1978 DRM championship and running it in Le Mans with the infamous Whittington Brothers where the Road Atlanta sponsorships that the brothers were added. The car was sold to another privateer and changes hand again where the car was run up to 1982. Recently the car was restored to original 77A specs and the Road Atlanta livery. The red car is yet another familiar sight, 1981 Ferrari 512 BB LM. Although Ferrari withdrew from sports car racing in early 70s to focus on Formula One, privateer such as NART, Ch. Pozzi or Garage Francorchamps still campaigned Ferrari independently and even achieved victory in cars like 365 GTB/4 Daytona. Demands from this customer relented Ferrari to make Group 5 version of their 512 BB. Strict diet and specially designed streamlined body from Pininfarina paired with uprated Ferrari V12 producing up to 600hp is not enough as the car was hampered by weak transmission. Therefore the car was never really contender for title despite in some occasion the 512 BB LM beats 935 in Le Mans for example. The car in 76 MM, chassis 35535 was made for Belgian team who added some modifications such as 935 brakes and suspension. The car first outing was on that year Le Mans wearing red European University livery. The car finished third in class and didn’t race again soon after. The car however was active in historic scenes since 1990s and return to Europe from US in early 2000s. The car has been actively campaigned in European historic series. The eye catching pink car is 1981 Porsche Kremer 935K3, K3 started when Kremer brothers who was campaigning 935 thought they can make a better version out of 935. And the K3 was born, the car noticeably is lighter than works 935, not to mention they addressed cooling and reliability issues. The car won championships and attract customers such as Whittington Brothers who reportedly showed up to Kremer with duffel bags full of cash. They ended up won the 1979 24 hours of Le Mans with K3. This car however, chassis 0020 is the last K3 built by Kremer. Bought and used by Whittington brothers in 1981 Le Mans where the car was DNF due to engine failure, the car was sold to German privateer and gained some success with Rolf Stommelen. It was later become part of now defunct Rosso Bianca museum in Germany, it now resides in Belgium and appears in historic racing in Europe. Behind the Pink Kremer is another 1981 512 BB LM, chassis 35523. It was originally purchased by UK gentleman driver Simon Phillips and he first run it under his name and almost no sponsors in Silverstone with DNF, he then took it to Le Mans that year with sponsors Ruane Motor Insurance and interestingly word “Sheila Wong Chong” in the bonnet. Don’t ask me why because I had no idea either! The car also DNF and after that the car compete in national events with less success before passed down to another owner for restoration in early 00s. The car has rather limited appearance in public lately. Another Gosser beer sponsored is 1978 BMW 320 Turbo, built to replaced the aging, and not really suitable BM2 3.5 CSL. The 320 Turbo uses 1,4 litre turbo engine and specifically designed body. The car dominates German DRM championship were BMW fielded their “BMW Junior Team” which allowed BMW young drivers to race and names like Schnitzer who also works sponsor team. I don’t know the specific chassis number of this BMW Faltz Essen car,the Gosser sponsor indicate that it might have been raced by Dieter Quester who drove for them in period. But I don’t know if this is a genuine car, rebuild or replica. If anyone knows history or stories of this car feel free to add in the comment section. That’s it for Part 1… Part 2 of Group 5 history lesson will be published soon.
