Good analysis. I have several Glarrys, 3 Monoprice, a couple IYVs and 2 Donners. I used to make partcasters more, but modding these decent ChiCom guitars is less expensive in the long run. When I get a building itch I often "rebuild" one of my builds. Lotsa fun.

I use to have a business building/assembling guitars. I'd look for cheaper guitars and upgrade the hardware/electronics as the quality has GREATLY improved over the cheap guitars in the 90s. I'm more of a moderate player, but find me a cheap guitar that plays great and take my money! I know I'll be buying a Glarry in the near future and upgrading it. How do you like the Glarry over IVYs?

I put locking tuners and roller string trees on mine. I also upgraded the loaded pickguard on my Squier Affinity Strat and put the old loaded pickguard in the Glarry.

For that money you cant even get a half way decent pair of shoes that aren't falling apart, since they're mostly just glued now at the sole. In the past people would kill to have a guitar that could do the job of a guitar, for the price of 2 or 3 lps....

What's crazy about these is that it's a great guitar to start off with, and then if you mod it, it can absolutely outshine a 1000 dollar guitar. soon they may be on par with them stock.

I buy these just for the neck tbh. You still have to put some effort into leveling and crowning etc but you have to do all that if you build it from scratch 🤷‍♂️ so aslong as it's a stable peice of maple it's the cheapest and best option in my opinion. I'm enjoying your videos 👍

i love cheap guitars because yes, they are a great jumping off point. i like to do microtone and macrotone mods, by changing where the bridge is at by adding length to the neck, or putting in a false bridge, or such. i also like to turn rail pickups sideways and wire it so each string has it's own separate output. or if you want to experiment with B bender type mechanisms, or add weird electronics of some sort. i just drill holes and screw sheet-rock screws or whatever into my guitars at this point to attach whatever seems clever.

Mark, that is a fantastic attitude. I believe Glarry have produced a quality product, it took a little time, the early models were sometimes a little rough around the frets. But now they are fantastic. I've got a pbass and a steat by them , purchased last year. Out the box, they were as good in fact better than many of the epiphone or squier that see straight out the box. My pbass is amazing, I love it. I did change out the nut for a tusq and the pu' recently for tonerider and added (cheap flats £16) but you know what, the difference in the pu' is at best slightly better. Go Glarry....in fact they have, because they've sold out in the UK. Great show Mark, you're an inspiration.

I just bought a ktlaxon guitar for 69 dollars on Amazon. Very similar to this glarry except it’s all white including pick guard. Maple neck and rosewood fret board. For 69 dollars I love the damn thing. I just put new strings on it and it was ready to play. I mean I was just amazed at how good it was.

I was considering the yellow one but after seeing this, the white has a striking look. I like these sharp angles (top round). I've been wishing Fender/Squire would stop making theirs so rounded.

I just got one of these for about $71.00 with free shipping from Walmart. It is actually my second one. The first I got from my brother in a trade. The accessories that come with it are nothing to scream about but the guitar itself is great for what you pay. I just play guitar for fun and taught myself. I am not very good but do alright with it considering that all I know I taught myself. I also own two Donners and they seem to be a step above these Glarry's. My main electric is a BC Rich Mockingbird that I bought back in the late 80's or early 90's. This guitar is pretty light which I am sure most people will like. I would have liked for it to be a little heavier, but I guess that does not really matter. How much does an actual Fender Strat weigh compared to it? I would be curious! Great video!

I just had to see this for myself lol Got one in white .. I did it a nice wipe down , lowered the action a bit , treated the neck with lemon oil, didn't even change the strings, removed one of the bridge tension springs , standard tuned it, adjusted the bridge tension just enough for rear of bridge doesn't touch the guitar body for better tuning stability , lowered the pickup heights , did a pickup wiring mod to get a dedicated tone just for the bridge pickup , tightened the tuners 's buttons and wow ...this guitar sounds and plays amazing and stays in tune beautifully. The medium jumbo frets and the neck for a guitar of this price is mind blowing . Love the light weight ..if you want a guitar to just practice with or experiment with upgrades , go for it . I may down the road put some Alnico pickups in it Thinking of getting a 2nd one in Yellow

On the Glarry website they offer a 6 pack of alnico pickups for 13.99. I don't know how good they are my guess is better than the stock ones. I am awaiting delivery of my first Glarry guitar as I type this. It has single coils in the neck and center position and a humbucker in the bridge position.

I have a similar, but different unbranded guitar that was in the same price range. For the price, it's amazing, but it does have sharp fret ends, and the neck is SO thick. The body is also EXTREMELY light. I totally agree with your take on guitars like these, and I think you may have inspired me to spend more time with mine.
@MarkGutierrez
@MarkGutierrez Жыл бұрын
The neck is thick but not any thicker than my 1975 Fender Strat. The fretboard is if very flat. I would assume 12 or 14 inch radius which makes the neck feel much bigger but I wouldn't consider it uncomfortable.

The guitar sounded good in the mix, and you didn't seem to have any problems playing it. Even the Tremolo, post mods, sounded stable. Great job by Larry! I haven't purchased a guitar in ages, instead I modded what I have. I thought about buying a Kit guitar so I could customize it to my needs. But, I think you're right that it looks more economical to buy a fully assembled guitar, like a Glarry, and use that as a platform for modification and experiments. Their specs list the body as Basswood. How good does the guitar sound outside of a mix? Any playability issues?

I believe these Glarry guitars should only be bought by folks like us who have the knowledge to set up the guitar and correct for any issues. Example: polishing the frets. Acoustically, the Glarry sounds really nice. Plugged in, it sounds like any other budget guitar. The pickups should be replaced but I didn't bother. I just dialed in the sound I needed. I've heard anecdotally, that if you buy direct form Glarry, they will send you out a new guitar if there is anything wrong with the one you received.

Before I even clicked on this video I was saying to myself "It's worth that in parts". My question is with the neck pocket. Is it setup exactly like a Fender so that a person could use spare Fender necks on it? Is the bolt hole pattern the same as a Fender neck? While you didn't do the video as a review; that's what I was looking for so I could get an idea of what parts I could possibly use. Are the electronics setup like a traditional Strat? Any pots with additional push-pull features? Is the whammy adjustable to set it up for different string gauges? Not much of this matters to the people this guitar is marketed to but for the DIY crowd we need to dig a little deeper.

I don't play. I had an electric guitar in high school for all of about 6 months before an ex-girlfriend and her friends broke into my house and stole my Levi Jacket and the guitar. It was fun to just occasionally play around with. Would you recommend this guitar if I really didn't want to spend any money and was just looking for something to occasionally play with? I have a 17 year old son that is currently taking guitar classes in high school. He is playing on a Yamaha acoustic at the moment and would also probably play with it. I would not want it if it is total trash or not really playable, but as long as it can be properly tuned and provides a playable experience that would not stunt my son's progression in learning guitar, then I would consider it.

a one hundred dollar guitar might need a one hundred dollar setup. i'd say go to a guitar center or whatever and try some guitars, ask them about setups and cost, maybe check their used section. i bought a used strat copy at a music go round store for 50 dollars that had the best setup i'd ever played, nice low action and smooth frets. i gave that one away to a beginner.

So my local store that I visit sees a lot of these cheapy off brand guys and in my experience they are a total crap shoot. Some of them are fine, others need to be finished being built entirely. Some are good but I've seen several now where the frets were straight up not done at all. Others arrived with very jagged edges from really bad fret sprout (to the point where it makes me think the wood was nowhere near dried enough.) I think people get a little complacent there and say oh what do you expect for a $80 guitar. Well I disagree with it being ok since not everyone is going to have the tools or the knowledge to finish them, and for a new player or someone that needed that money to go as far as possible and can't afford to take it in to get finished etc, that can be a pretty nasty pitfall. Also a lot of these are made with what basically equates to slave labor. The people pumping these out are definitely being exploited in a bad way. It makes these a real double edged sword. It might be good... but it might also be made super unethically.

100 percent agree with the inconsistency on these guitars. They are definitely not for beginner guitarists. They simply requite too much setup. But my channel's audience is mostly guitar builders and these guitars are perfect for those of us with the tools and chops. I'm taking with the GlarryMusic folks and am going to ask about the working conditions for their workforce.

One reason why these guitars are so cheap is they're being made by either slave labor, criminals firced to work or just extremely low paid people who have no other way to make money. It's a good thing for buyers and a bad thing for workers. It's a double edged sword. I wish these were available when I first started playing guitar back in 1985. I paid $120 for an American made Peavey Patriot with a case. It was a decent guitar for me at the time. Wish I still had it 😂
