78 Reglazing Pottery - Refire with a New Layer of Glaze

No matter how good are pottery you are sooner or later you will end up with pottery where the glaze did not turn out so well. But don't give up. You can reglaze it!
In this video I will show you an easy way to successfully reglaze your pots - refire them with a new layer of glaze and we will look at the final results.

I find when I heat up the pottery in the oven to 175-180 F. The glaze sticks right away and of coarse dries quickly. I have had good results .

Thanks. It could be glazes that do not work together. Not all do

Thank you so much for creating this video, very helpful step by step straight forward instructions. I have a bust I made and the glaze is awful! I’m wondering if I can sand her back and use underglaze to repaint her then cover with a glaze… or whether to cover her with an over glaze. I haven’t found any relevant video’s regarding repainting human sculptures. I’m pretty new at this, but totally hooked!

Thanks for the great video Mikkel. Do you have any idea why the glaze was not sticking right in the first firing for the pot at 6:00 - i did have that problem with several pots and different glazes. thanks again!

Thanks! There can be many reasons such as bad glaze application or a problem withe fire of that pot

How about heating the pot before you dip it and also you could add gum to the glaze to make it stronger good luck Mary

I was wondering if you put a clear glaze over your pots? Is it possible to add oxides and stains when a pot has been fired with a clear glaze on it and then refire it?

No, it's just the colored glazes. Yes, you can usually refire. But unless you tried the exact combination before the results can be a little unpredictable :-)

I too have a glaze that was blue until suddenly it wasn't. Don't you hate it when a glaze looks great, looks great, and then one day it looks completely different?

The glaze in question (my Floating Blue variant) actually still look as it always have. It was just this one application that came out too white - and there are off course some chemical explanation to this that I am just not fully aware of. I do, however suspect the iron dust and the mix with A2 white is the main courses.

What can i do of the frist layer of the glaze cracks when reglazing, what did i do wrong ? Thank you Chantal

It could be many things. Maybe the SG of the glaze is not right for it (too much or little water to dry material ratio) or the glaze simply is not good for this application

@@deMibPottery i had done the fitst glaze firing with the same glaze but too little (sprayed) now i dipped the piece in the glaze and after drying it cracked 🤔 .’’’
