I didn't believe this 79 Cutlass came from the factory with a small V8 and a 5 speed until I found the sales info in the glove box. The Olds 260 is notoriously underpowered and difficult to modify but I've lucked up and found an SP2P for it so I can put a 4 barrel on the 260 without doing any major port work.

Part two is now out where I install a new radiator and new alternator and show off the new junkyard Mustang T5 I bought to replace the blown up stock 5 speed. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r6iTpbelut7cfJ8.html

I had one! '79 Cutlass Supreme 260 V8 with the 5 speed. Loved the shift pattern, totally different than anything else my buddies had. Weak transmission, blew three of them before swapping it out for a Turbo 350. Sold it soon afterwards, wish I still had it.

@Bob Ellis Thanks a lot for the view and comment! You are right that is definitely one weak transmission, the max torque capacity was almost exactly as much torque as the average 260 makes stock.

That VR GT350 is incredible, I didn’t know that gaming was at that level. Too bad about the 2.56, the 2.79 that came stock in the Fairlane was a bummer but the auto trans helped. Nice work on the roof repair, looking forward to seeing the car painted. Great vid, excited about this build!

@East Bay Hounds Thanks a lot man! Really looking forward to seeing how it turns out myself. That intake was just a pipe dream until I stumbled across one on Ebay a couple months ago. Now the car has a much better chance of making some decent power. I've been driving a lot in VR lately with this lockdown stuff going on. I might post one or two of the drives. Thanks for watching!

Hey man! Yeah it has been a while. I have been out of video making since the club disbanded last year. I gave the Fairlane to “Big Block” from the channel and he daily drives it. I have gotten deep into photography and EVs so I post my pics on Instagram. I feel like that platform has been better for engaging with car folks. Are you on IG? Hope you are well. -JB

@B5 BEAST I rode in one a lot as a kid so I've always had a bit of an eye for them, but this is the only one with a clutch I've seen in person. I'm thinking Cragars too but another viewer mentioned it would look cool with dog dishes on the steel wheels and I have to agree. There are lots of options to consider but flat black with Cragars is on my mind the most.

That intake was made for vehicles with gear ratios like 2.71 or in your case 2.56.I believe they stopped making the SP2P because it makes less power than the factory intakes, like their Streetmaster intakes were just something to keep product line fresh and with the times.(the second gas shortage) It sold to the gas mileage seekers, just the opposite of who their customer base was created on. The 1st gear ratio on that 5 speed is maybe 2.95? hence the 2.56 rear.
@Impactjunky
@Impactjunky 4 жыл бұрын
@Paintnamer Thanks for watching! First in this trans is supposedly either 3.10 or 3.41 but it still feels too tall for this gutless little engine. As you can see at the very end of the vid it can barely do a burnout dumping the clutch on dirt. Off camera I have to rev it up pretty high just to get it to move when most other old V8 and straight six cars I've driven are almost impossible to stall out. As for the intake, when you're dropping the peak to 4500 it's bound to lower peak HP on some combos. Like UTG was saying in his vids its not always about peak numbers though, throttle response and velocity are often more important. Olds engines don't really lend themselves well to high RPM anyway so I'm hoping this intake, a low gear and a cam advance should at least make it get out of its own way.

@ᙅYᙖᙓᖇ ᗪOᙅ™ My mom had a new 88. It was a nice car, I rode in it a lot as a kid. Hers had a 307 4 barrel. Not quiet as much of a dog as the 260 2 barrel but nothing special either.

@@Impactjunky Had a few 307s in my family, none originally bought by my parents. My uncle had an '80 Riviera with a 307, an '84 Delta 88 with a 307 (which I've owned since 1996), my other uncle had an '83 Park Ave with a 307 and I had an '82 Toronado with a 307. My Toro got stolen, I put it back together after buying it back from the insurance company and I sold it in 2009 as by that time I had a new Pontiac G6 convertible (still have that). Owned the Toro from 1987 to 2009, but only on the road from 1988 to 1990, and then I rebuilt it over time, and stored it and then sold it. The '80 Riviera that was my uncle's was stolen and recovered five times, #6 it was gone for good. I still have the VIN #, for it, I should try to trace it.

@Old Skool Only Garage Thank you mate! Leaning towards the Cragars myself. My mom had a brand new 88 model similar to this one but it was a blue on blue 307 4 barrel auto and I rode around in it a lot as a kid. I'm surprised you guys didn't get this car because it was insanely common over here. They were like the prius or civic of their time but more luxurious. I've been busy working on a lot of stuff but I'm gonna catch up on your new vids soon. The thumbails look awesome!

very cool factory overdrive manual t5 back in 79 wow. bad gearbox typical t5 lol. i had one built and 5th gear dropped out on my first firebird first drive, while i had a girl in the passenger seat. also my buddy had a mustang with a t5 and he blew up 3 of those transmissions lol. what about the astro van t5 or the trans am t5 or the s10 t5 ?
@Impactjunky
@Impactjunky 4 жыл бұрын
MrJohn613 Hammer&Wrench Builds Thanks for watching! The trans that came out of the car is the T5's obsolete ancestor, the T50. As for other T5's the only T5 I could find on the fitment chart that fits this car without a bunch of custom work is the one from a 98-04 mustang. This little 260 isn't gonna have a chance of making enough power to hurt a T5 either. it's a lot tougher than the T50.

Add-on mods w/o boosting compression, is gonna make it an even Bigger Turd! Find a good running 403, you'll be much happier.
@Impactjunky

@Pro Drvr That's the point of advancing the stock cam and locking the distributor at full advance. Advancing your cam can have a big effect on cylinder pressure, so big that I've heard of people having to start using premium fuel to avoid detonation. It's probably gonna be fighting the starter with both of those mods put together. The 4 barrel intake I have for it is known to the Olds crowd to wake the 260 up pretty good too so I'm expecting decent results. I drove daily on a little 273 V8 in my Satellite so I know what ballpark I'm shooting for. Thanks for watching by the way!

Bro! I've always loved those G body GM cars!!! You should pull the 260, and do an LS swap. They're reasonavly priced, andthe stupid horsepower you can get with bolt ons is crazy! Do the steelies, find some dog- dish hubcaps. It would look like a moonshiner's car. Stick with the flat black man. Just murder it out. Hammer and dolly the rear window opening. Vinyl tops only serve to rust the roof out. Open up the ports on the intake. Not that difficult.
@Impactjunky
@Impactjunky 4 жыл бұрын
@George Mcmillan Yeah I'm definitely not going back with the vinyl top. If the original 260 kicks the bucket I'm definitely gonna replace it with something better. An Oldsmobile V8 to match the belllhousing would be nice but I can put a Chevy in it with an engine to bellhousing adapter plate if I can't find a good Olds motor.
@Impactjunky
@Impactjunky 4 жыл бұрын
@George Mcmillan Thanks for the input by the way! I'm leaning heavily towards flat black myself. I hadn't considered dog dishes on the steelies yet but that would look really cool. I might do it if I can find some.

@@Impactjunky Yuck. Paint it factory colors and if you must change the engine, keep it Oldsmobile powered, but keep the original 260 V8 so you can go backward for originality if you need to. Yuck on an LS swap. Everyone and their brother does that. Take the route less traveled and go Olds V8.
@Impactjunky
@Impactjunky 4 жыл бұрын
@@googleusergp I would like to keep it Oldsmobile powered if possible. I'm not a big fan of brand swaps or unnecessary modernization. The only reason the 260 will come out is if it has a catastrophic failure or if I find a better Olds engine. The car may possibly end up with a Chevy motor in it temporarily if the 260 does quit and I can't find a suitable Olds engine.

@@Impactjunky Friends don't let friends do non-divisional power. I own Pontiac Trans Ams. I normally don't even consider cars with 403 Olds engines in them. Great engines, but they belong in Oldsmobiles, not Pontiacs. GM got sued over that in 1977, and that's why later window stickers said, the "this car may have engines made by this and that GM division" on them.

I can't make out the VIN, on the receipt, but it appears to show 3 for Oldsmobile, K for Cutlass Calais, 47 for two door, F for Olds V8 with two barrel, 9 for 1979 model year, I can't make out the next character which would be the assembly plant and the rest is the production sequence. Where was it from/what dealer sold it originally?

@@Impactjunky What was the plant code character in the VIN that I couldn't make out? My '79 Cutlass was a trade in back in 1985 at the Cadillac dealer my father worked at. We paid $2200 for it, selling a '74 Duster for $1300, so the car cost a net of $900. My sister owned it from 1985 to 1990, then I had it from 1990 to 1993, and I sold it for $700 in 1993. So the car virtually cost nothing to run in the 8 years we owned it. It was originally sold at A.D. Anderson in Baltimore, MD, which was famous for racing back in the day. Mine was an "LD5" 231 V6 Buick, code #24 light blue, with PS, PB, tilt cruise, AC, rear defogger, full vinyl top, cloth interior and split seat. Ran great, absolutely frigid cold AC. Mine was assembled in Oshawa, Ontario (VIN code "2"). Good car. I had many parts cars over the years, including a '79 Supreme with a 305 as I related on CRS video.
