Reuploaded after removing a farily substantial brain fart on my part. I just didn't want to have to keep explaining the mistake to commenter after commenter.
(For those who missed it, I've had so many Deluxe Reverbs in lately that I expected the [almost identical] Vibrolux Reverb to use 6V6s, too. And yes, I know better - that kind of day.)

I’m the owner. I’ve the amp back for a while and it sounds fantastic. I didn’t realize that an amp could be this quiet at band volume.

I have owned my 74 V Verb since I was 12 years old. I bought it with my own money I earned with my paper route. I had about 6 different groups of people on my route I used to play guitar with. We played everything from Johnny Cash, to Jimi Hendrix to Yacht Rock to Classical, and even originals. I loved it.

Finally a Vibrolux Reverb video. Not many references to that model. I've owned one since 1989 (Vibrolux Reverb w/silverface from the late 1970's if I'm remembering correctly... paid $100 for it) I haven't fired it up in over 10 years now... I'm a little hesitant since I currently do not have a variac to ease it up to voltage... Looking forward to the follow up video... hard to find much info on the old Vibrolux Reverb... only reissue stuff...

Great video thanks, love the Vibrolux. Do you get asked to do "blackfacing" on these silverfaces much these days? It would be interesting to know what you consider to be the definitive BFing procedure. Is that a video subject? Cheers.

Another great video Lyle! Huge fan of your channel from the Netherlands here. Any chance you can dive a little bit more into the changed PI tail resistors of this specific’79 model against the earlier ones (AA270 schematic)? I believe they changed the tail into 330K/680 ohms instead of 1 Meg/470 ohms. Was wondering why fender did change this and what kind of effect it would have in driving the PI. Is it very audible? Would love to hear your thoughts about this “change” during approx ‘78/‘79. Thanks for your great videos!

Hello Lyle, I awhile back received an assortment of fast blow fuses. I paid no attention and just put in a drawer. When I got a call from a friend with a problem in one of his amps. It's an old Pine Amplification from Canada, Riviera model, based off the Deluxe. I was the previous owner. Now back to fuses, they are metric at 6mm(.235) 30mm(1.2"). Can i even use these? I measured the fuse from my Vintage Sounds amp and it is a standard American fuse .250" X 1.238". I assume the old Pine will be standard. I just assumed they were a standard size, I must have ben in a hurry when i ordered them.

I debated leaving it up, stupid and all, but decided I'd spent too much time posting mea culpas to every other comment. So a quick edit later it's good, but I left my original boner in the description. Sometimes you just gotta laugh at yourself. It's funny when people say I'm bitter or sound angry - I've always tried to put little bits of humor throughout the videos. I don't know that they're always funny, but at least I try. I like to think that longer term viewers have a pretty good sense of who I am. Including the occasional really dumb things we all do. I just have an audience. ;)

@@PsionicAudio What I got a chuckle at was you talking about 6V6’s and the 40 watt’s on the backplate in the same frame. I just thought “Lyle’s had a long day”.

For those who don't know, the Vibrolux and the Deluxe have the same filter cap setup (unique to just those two models) and I had just looked at them before shooting that. And my brain went to Deluxe evaluation mode.

Hey. Your Vibrolux ain’t Vibro ing. I always enjoyed having these in the shop. I always felt they had the best blend of sounds. Depending on what speaker you put in them you have a very wide array of available sounds. Little thin P10R or C10R type speakers and you have a lot of the late 50’s and early 60’s sounds. JBL E or K110’s and you have a wide range face blaster. We put those 90’s Celestion 10’s in one one time and that was pretty cool too. The plain Jane CTS 10’s were pretty right down the middle. Kinda low efficiency so you could crank them up without killing people. I never heard one I didn’t like. About the Illinois Capacitors. We used to use them into the 90’s on our products. At some point they got kinda leaky and bad. I would say the 00’s they were outright terrible. Now I think they are made in China by some OEM. They may have been back then too. Now I only buy Rubycon, Panasonic/Matsushitsa, or Nichicon and to be honest the Nichicons are not as good as they once were. I find quite a few (Bear in mine we use many thousands of them) actually require reforming or actually never come up to full capacitance or lowest ESR. I am starting to keep a log to see if we have a trend but it has me a bit concerned. Of course we only use 25 volt mostly either 1000 or 2200 uf caps so it’s not apples and oranges, but still something to keep track of.

Is the amp in this video one of the ultralinear models? If so, do you stand by your statement of standby not being neccessary? I never use standby on any of my blackface circuits, but I have a pro reverb and bassman ten, which are of the ultralinear type. I always use standby for them.
@PsionicAudio
@PsionicAudio Жыл бұрын
Tube rectifier takes longer to heat than the output tubes. UL doesn't factor in. No B+ will be present before the tubes are warm. Your Pro is SS rectified, so use the standby. I don't remember the rectification in the Bassman 10 - if SS, use Standby.

Why do you say a Vibrolux is one of your favs, from a standpoint of easy to work on or the versatility if the circuit?
@PsionicAudio
@PsionicAudio 2 жыл бұрын
Loud enough for any stage, not much heavier than a Deluxe Reverb, and because of the undersized output transformer it breaks up earlier and differently than other Fenders of the era. Got some snarl to it, but it does beautiful cleans too.

The circuit is nearly identical to every other Silver Panel Fender of the time. So is the serviceability. The Vibrolux shines in its size, power level and speaker configuration. It’s just about the most perfect amp Fender ever put together for gigging musicians and they sound really damn good.

Not really related, but I removed one leg of the filtering capacitors on my Carvin MTS3200 amplifier from 1996 and tested the health of them on my transistor+ tester. Just wanted your opinion, but they all seemed really healthy to me despite being at least 27 years old? I have F&Ts coming, so I will change them out anyways. But do you think it’s really necessary to change these caps out in general unless they show obvious leakage? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r9ihgMiDvLG3fHk.html

The better ones are longer and seem to have been phased out in the ‘90s. So even the better ones are reaching end of life but they aren’t immediate suspects.
