Just ordered the mieke version of this lens and after seeing this I think I made the right decision. I don’t think the 7A is brighter as you mentioned a couple of times, it looked more like it was a lack of contrast and a bit washed out. The mieke had much nicer colours and more contrast.

I was going to wait for this video before making my decision. But I went ahead and bought the 7Artisans. Have been using it for a month or so and I'm very happy with it. The images were clean and sharp. Assigning Focus Magnifier to C1 button helps a lot with focusing. Great in low light environment. Used it in a few b/w street photography sessions, very happy with the result. A previous video mentioned this lens has red flare. Using a hood pretty much solves the problem. Have not used any Meike lens before, but I would still recommend the 7Artisans.
@iyzyz6 жыл бұрын
How easy is it to focus? and where did you get the hood from?
@tonipalmen6 жыл бұрын
7artisans seems to have more pixie-dust and unicorn stuff in it's insides. It is technically way worse than my Fuji XF 35mm f/1.4 if looking just pure performance, but still the images it produces have something special in them. It is cheap, extremely pleasant to use and focus, has great build quality (for the price), is really, really small and has a very pleasant look in it's images. And finally, I don't care much about the corners as they are oof anyways most of the time. Couldn't recommend it more. ;)

@BigBoss-gb4cx6 жыл бұрын
Honestly PC building and gaming are a lot less expensive compared to photography.
@kornkernel22325 жыл бұрын
Quite true. Though depends how much really you constantly spending on new gear or upgrades. PC building is only expensive initially when building a PC, and the specs are dependent to your needs and wants. After that, the spending is not that much unless you always spend on buying expensive new games or software way too often. Photography, you can start cheaper but the more you want to expand to Photography, the more expensive the gear you may have. Though eventually you may stop buying or slow down on buying a new gear.

The Neewer lens looks like a normal apsc lens. Getting f1.7 35mm for like $70 is hard to beat and it works. But the 7artisans looked much better at 1.7, and it has that 1.2 there if you need it. It's like spinal tap, it can go to 11 when you need to. The corners thing is a little weird, but at 35mm you should have some room to crop anyway. Which makes me think this will be one helluva m4/3 lens. It solves all the problems in the corners and m4/3 cameras need more light.
@uscfroadie6 жыл бұрын
Do you ever take calipers to actually measure the aperture? I ask because between 1:45-2:00 you show the aperture openings on both and the 7artisans is a claimed 1.2, but the aperture opening, despite being the same focal length, appears smaller. Furthermore, at 3:30 when you show the shots of the 7artisans at 1.2 and 1.7 side by side, the images look identical aside from a lack of sharpness on the 1.2. Curious if that 1.2 really measures at a 29mm opening to validate that 1.2 claim.
@MrPaulrt5 жыл бұрын
The aperture is measured from the front. You measure the opening of the aperture as how you see it from the front. Now look at both lenses from the front again (1:04), the 7artisans has clearly a much bigger opening so it has a lower aperture number. Nothing wrong there. The images at 3:30 look the same, but one is shot at 1/800s and one at 1/1000s so it is very clear that its letting more light in at f1.2. Nothing wrong there too.
@lukazupie72205 жыл бұрын
MrPaulrt thanks for explaining. Why is 1.7 bigger from behind? Seems quite a bit bigger, does that mean it would fit on FF or atleast have less vignetting? Not that i have FF but it is interesting..

Hi Arthur, I really like your channel and content, keep up with the cheap lens review, not only the newer expensive glass. On this regard, very important tip: If you want to test sharpness, vignetting and others. Get a tripod and shoot some test charts instead. Although we appreciate the effort on making this shots, it's not going to show clearly anything if the shots are miss-focused, moving subjects or moving background. Thanks!

I buy the Meike (or Neewer) 35mm F/1.7, yes its budget friendly manual focus lens, good for portrait with smooth bokeh. But's it's a manual lens, not recomended for taking quick shot. Using the lens 3 times on vacation, and I'm sold it. Manual lens not for me. Using manual lens takes a time to focus, and my wife can't use this lens to take a pictures, all ended with blurry focus. I decided to buy Sony 35mm F/1.8 later, and I'm very satisfied with this lens, very quick focus and no need to rotate the ring for focusing. ;)

Hi, Actually, looking at 7artisans - Sigma 30mm f2.8 is pretty close in price, has autofocus, no vignetting, and it's one of the sharpest lenses wide open. I would say I would recommend that more compared to the 7artisans. Meike is good if you are on a REALLY tight budget.
@ArthurR6 жыл бұрын
Indeed, the Sigma is a great lens for the money, these options are just faster at F1.7 and F1.2 vs the F2.8.
@geopapa806 жыл бұрын
Sigma is on another league. It is autofocus, writes exif data, it's lighter (OK it's close at140 vs 150), has better colors, sharper across the frame even at 2.8, nearly no vignetting and chromatic aberrations and nearly no flaring.. Speed isn't everything (if you really need speed as well, save for the Sigma 1.4)
@n3cph0en1x6 жыл бұрын
TechnologyMafia That is absolutely true, but my blind guess is, even if you stop these down to 2.8, Sigma would be sharper wide open. Also, having a fast lens is awesome, but having a shallow depth of field will mean, you will miss the focus a lot. Imagine you would use these for street photography - even for experienced people it can easily happen, that you miss focus 4 out of 10. Anyhow, I'm a huge fan, please continue what you are doing, it's extremely valuable. Cheers from Hungary
