7Hz Salnotes Zero IEM review 🎧Successor to the Sony MH1?

2022's hottest budget IEM has a secret that was buried beneath the mountain of hype. As it turns out, this stealth Crinacle collab measures almost identically to the classic Sony MH1. Does the Salnotes Zero live up to 2012's original budget king?
UPDATE - May 12th 2023:
After 4 months of daily usage, my unit developed a channel imbalance in the right ear. However, I was able to fix this by replacing the filter:

The EQ preset (load this into EqualizerAPO)
Preamp: -10.4 dB
Filter: ON PK Fc 16500 Hz Gain 11.5 dB Q 1.2
Filter: ON PK Fc 12000 Hz Gain -2 dB Q 0.7
Should fix the upper-treble deficiency when compared to Sennheiser HD 6XX. You could try a high-shelf filter instead, but I couldn't find the right balance.

Do NOT buy the AliExpress boom mic cable shown in the video, it has bad connection problems that end up causing rapid clicking that never go away.

*FOUR MONTH UPDATE:* My unit now has experienced audio imbalance in the right bud. HOWEVER, I was able to fix it by replacing the filter: www.amazon.com/dp/B0B5TMDRCX?psc=1 *UPDATE:* Do NOT buy the AliExpress boom mic shown at 4:29. It's defective and will eventually cause some kind of short that causes a rapid clicking sound that never goes away.

I ordered the Zero but before they arrive i tried looking for MH1 since you put them in such a high regard. To my surprise here in Poland i found some MH1c on our domestic "Amazon" like site, for 40PLN so give or take 9 USD. Dude still has about 180 pairs in stock so i ordered them as well and they arrived so im checking them out. Im a noobie in audiophile but in comparison to my old IEMs (KZ ZSN PRO) they are really good so im happy with them, thanks for your review man!

I upgraded mine with a TRN modular cable and Jcally foam tips, now it's got everything I've ever wanted in an IEM :D

The Salnotes Zero happens to be very good for what it is, but don't buy solely based on Flavor of the Month hype. That's how the Crinacles and HBBs of the world make you their paypig. 1) Learn what you like. 2) Learn to read graphs of what you like. 3) Compare graphs of what you like to anything you're considering buying to get an idea of what will sound different and what will sound similar. It might seem hard at first, but you learn quickly. Focus primarily on the bass and treble tilt and avoid anything with large, narrow resonances (peaks or dips). EDIT: oh yeah and obviously look for common QC complaints, Amazon is surprisingly good about this due to the picture section. Most shill reviewers cover up huge, glaring design flaws that'll force you to buy new IEMs or headphones in less than a year.

@@IDrinkLava This will be my endgame iem so i won't look up to anything new until it's get broken. When that happens, I'm gonna search for most hype budget iem again and compare it to 7Hz Zero. Thanks for the tips!

I have the wan’er and it is very very good. like you said about the upper treble of the zero it has some rolloff and not *quite* as much air as the hd650 or hd6xx but it is linear and very smooth, and still quite detailed all things considered. bass is absolutely 100% flat out superior to the hd6xx. overall tonality is similar but wan’er i feel exhibits less of that “sennheiser veil”. you should try it! 20 bucks what could go wrong? the truthear hola also came out and looks like a very relaxed but accurate set. chifi is getting crazy

Oh I don't really have much interest in becoming a Chi-Fi shill or anything. I just did this video because I reviewed the Sony MH1 last year and I thought the Salnotes Zero could finally be its successor based on graphs.

to me this IEM is a little bit over-emphasis on the pinna gain region (around 3000hz) and a bit lacks body (around 300hz) to be considered truly neutral like what I hear in speakers, it's probably Crin's preference, but all those problems are very easy to fix with EQ, overall great earphone

Nice, i'll get mine probably next week, i can't wait! I think it will be a good upgrade from my current KZ EDX. Not sure if i'll notice the upper-treble deficiency mentioned, if yes i'll test your settings.

Kz edx has very v shaped tuning by comparison. You might need an extended adjustment period for your ears to get used to them. Once you get used to neutral sound, you'll never want to hear anything else.

@@IDrinkLava yeah you're absolutely right! This headphones from my avatar picture here was Arcano shp80, which had a more neutral tuning and I loved it so much! I'm using the Salnotes Zero autoeq profile for EDX for a while now to get used to the neutral again. Of course it can't sound exactly like the Zero but is already nice that the treble is less fatiguing and mids are much more clear now.

Is it worth buying an mh1c for $20 if there is an mh755? I am very sensitive to the upper frequency range and mh755 can be loud for me. Also, the average frequencies have no weight.

Yeah, get the filters in the pinned comment just in case. Look into airtight storage containers with at least two silica gel packets.

are they good for FPS gaming? and is there good budget IEMs for gaming?

Everything with a frequency response that sounds agreeable to your ears is "good for gaming". I've found that stronger damping tends to blunt imaging capabilities (see the Magnavox Hi-Fi Stereo headphones review), yet there are thousands of Redditors and Head-Fiers who would claim the AKG K612/701/702/712 Pro is "good for gaming" despite the thick damping rings.

@@IDrinkLava I use 7hz timeless, hd 800s. But I've had the akg 612 and the 702. They work great for imaging. I think the 702 sounds better than the 612 tho. They are super uncomfortable tho. The 702s are almost as good as the timeless and the timeless sounds almost as good as the hd800s.

i went with Tangzu WAN ER SG instead of 7Hz Salnotes Zero, was that a bad idea?

I don't like to play the "different flavors" card but they should be more or less the same. The Wan'er has like 1.5dB-2dB more bass as well as 2.5dB-3dB less upper-mids and low/mid-treble. The Wan'er would probably sound closer to the HD 6XX but with way more sub-bass and less shout. The Salnotes Zero is more or less "Harman neutral" but with the HD 6XX mid-bass hump. I prefer Harman neutral to HD 600-series neutral now. I explain my reasoning behind hearing the "veil" in the Bass Jaxx Superior review.

@@IDrinkLava oh sorry, what I meant was, that if I just want a budget IEM, casual fps gaming, I don't need to buy some expensive IEMs. is that correct understood? like I can just go with a 20$ iem instead of spending like 500$ if the use-case is casual games.

@@0x-001 There is no correlation between price and sound quality. As long as it measures the way you want it to and the distortion is beyond the human hearing threshold, you can't get any better audio reproduction.

I have 7hz zero, its's good but it's quite bass lackin for me, but the graph of Truthear Hola seems more balanced (have more bass) based on the squigs hehehe

@@Pedzz It just sounds like you prefer bass-boosted IEMs, then. The Salnotes Zero is meant to produce uncolored sound.

Yeah, but I also have a treble issue with my set for some reason, when i go to the tone generator and play the frequencies there's a 11k spike and it's very piercing, to fix this i use foam tips and it worked but for some reason it killed the sub bass extension

@@Pedzz That's normal, though, both the upper-treble spike and the sub-bass rolloff. The upper-treble spike is related to HRTF resonances. IIRC, the fundamental frequency is around 2.7kHz on average so the 11k spike is the third order harmonic. For me, it's around 12500Hz.
