Much thanks. wow, retired guy, have learned some basic diatonic theory over the years playing guitar, you are showing me how to make all work together with taste and choice. Buying an electric piano for my 65th Bday was some of the best money i've ever spent. Have i been playing the wrong instrument for 50 years? Why, yes, quite possibly. Been looking for a guy like you. Please carry on Good Sir💙

Love the insight into how the 7th introduces a minor tone to the major triad and a major tone to the minor triad. Also, I really appreciated the clarity into how or when to apply the flattened 7th. If it's not written, maj7 (🔼7), then its flattened 7th helps my understanding.

Love the theory. It’s been decades since I seriously studied so i welcome the recaps. Recognizing the triads burried inside a “poly chord” (so to say) is important for arrangements. Depending bass is so much nicer to listen to and your lesson makes it obvious how to examine the chord structure to devise such arrangements. I say keep the theory coming! I too am a bass player and guitar player, and unfortunately I only see these things in my head as a keyboard player.

Wow Adam another great video. Seriously wish you had been my teacher. Although I understand and have knowledge of these chords, Your tips on how to recognise them without labouring over the keyboard is so simple and would have been so very welcome when I started in the 70's. Also you always surprise me when you just hit the nail on the head and make the penny drop when you say there is a minor in the major chord and vice versa hence why you're hearing the opposite potentially. For years I just accepted that I couldn't always tell the difference between the major and or minor and how to identify them by ear. You are a genius man! You never cease to amaze me when you come up with these little gems and the light bulb just comes on and it's like Oh yeah - that is so obvious lol! I love music theory and I confess I am a theory nerd so always interested and eager to learn more quick tips and patterns. You just have to look at the circle of fifths and fourths to see that music is made up of just patterns which really helps with improvisation. I certainly will be purchasing your books Adam. Please let us know when they are released on sale. Keep the theory lessons coming, along with more improv vids. Thank you so so so much Adam. Really looking forward to the next one.

You didn't point out a very simple formula to form 7th chords: they are just Major and Minor chords stacked on top of each other! 1) MAJOR 7 chord = Major Triad of the root note + Minor Triad of the 3rd For example: Cmaj7 = C major triad (C E G) + E minor triad (E G B) The reverse is also true. 2) MINOR 7 chord = Minor Triad of the root note + Major Triad of the 3rd. E.g. Cm7 = C minor triad (C Eb G) + E major triad (E G# B)

Make more sense if a TRI-ad were represented by the TRI-angle instead, and the 7th could be a 7 or a square or something.

Great lesson, thank you. I made the same discovery a few weeks back (Pink Floyd’s The great gig in the sky has some great maj7 rhs) and it was a eureka moment. I haven’t been playing long so always looking for any shortcuts to help progress. I also worked out the diminished chord business. Love a bit of music theory to get the old grey matter working.

Hi Mick - will check that out, it’s amazing when you see that link isn’t it! For me, sevenths add ambiguity - the combination of major and minor, or minor and major creates an added layer of depth and richness. Thanks for the support with the channel!

The B is one of the strongest leading tones for C major. That’s probably why it sounds good even tho it Un-resolves the C chord.

Hi Adam, great video as always alhtough I knew all of that!:) Could I propose that you create a video (or 2) on the usages of these 3 7th chords; I would even add the half dim7 & dim7 chords to that maybe? Sort of like song examples going into improvisation the same way you have been doing in the Elton John and Lionel Richie videos? That would really be great because although I know all of this, I`m really having difficulty using them when it comes to improvisation...Thanks so much and please keep it coming; I really enjoy your channel and have saved at least 80% of your videos to practice them regularly:)

Hi Brian - you can! It’s called a minor major7 - so in C that would be C, Eb, G and B and the formula is 1 b3 5 and 7. The chord symbol is Cm△. Hope that helps!

@@thekeyscoachI watched your presentation and downloaded the cheat sheet. It was so smooth, clear, easy to understand. Thank you. Practice and experimenting follows. But wait a minute, I think I am not done with all the 7 chords and this is bothering me. There is the forementioned minor major7, then half and diminished7 and searching on the net I can see there exists augmented major7 and augmented7. Am I missing something? Of course I cam make some research on the net, but how nice would be having all in a place in your brilliant presentation with your explanations. Thank you for reading this.

Been thinking more about minor major 7s. Logically I'd have thought these would have been the chords when you play diatonically up the major 7th scale....but you went to the the flatted 7. That's hard to get your mind round!
