@elliottpalmer7624 we will agree to disagree on that one. I have an '05 Rubicon all built out for offroading. I never take my 3500 AT4 Duramax offroad because it's too big and too expensive. My side by side is new and expensive, but it's indestructible. Also, these new SUV's and trucks are way too wide for CO trails...

@@richfarfugnuven6308 it’s all relative. I take my 2014 Range Rover off road because I bought it for the value of it bearing great on and off road. Some people say it’s too expensive to break ($35k when I bought it years ago) but for me it’s not too expensive. Everything is relative. I am glad I bought white though for all the pin stripping. 🤣

Hello Tommy. Some decades ago I had a 1987 model Defender 90, which drove with snow chains at narrow and icy trails with a trailer to get to a work site where no one had driven anything before that Defender broke the barrier to make some soil investigations possible for safer days to the people living downstrwam. That vehicle was a relatively cheap very reliable, affortable and popular 4x4 work truck with 7.700 pounds of towing capacity (3,5 tons). After 5 years I sold it for exactly the same amount of money I had bought it for, and besides the LC 150 Prado bought many years later this 4x4 was required with only normal annual maintenance and surprisingly was at the same reliability level as the LC Prado. Of course this Defender had bad crash security seen up against a modern car, but much people world wide are missing this affortable work horses. And I have heard a lot of people telling that Land Rover with their new Defender have distanced themselves from the common people. Best Regards from Arne G in Norway

Rover really led the way with this stuff and even the early systems like the LR3 (2005) are ahead of most current systems. That said, I'll take simple manually selectable systems every time given the choice but I understand why manufacturers want to dumb everything down and make it "automatic" - no driver skill/knowledge required.

Great video! I have a few notes: Nothing wrong with the ‘05. It had some teething issues, but they all got sorted. It would be interesting to see how an LR3 and Defender with the same drivetrain would do 1:1…meaning a Defender with no rear locker vs Tommy…or Roman’s Defender vs my LR3! Best setup for that terrain is Mud ‘n Ruts with DSC off (low range of course). Everyone hypes HDC for descents…it’s great as a torque-arrester when there are big holes to navigate, but low range is doing all the work!

The Disco (what you guys call the LR3) is probably the most popular off roading vehicles here in the UK (alongside the L318), I don't mean popular off road style vehicles, I mean the commonly seen vehicle green landing and off roading. They are darn good off road! I've never seen a new Defender green landing here in the UK, but I've seen plenty of JL Jeeps! So that tells you something about where Land Rover is going and how people see them. I mean who wants to off road with 20 inch wheels? And the Range Rovers are worse, sure the off road driving aids are really second to none, but the wheel choices are terrible for these SUVs now. They are more about the looks than off road performance.

To be fair, greenlaning is generally extremely mild off-roading. Spent a week in Wales with a nearly stock D90 (original, not current) and even with open difs and hard-as-a-rock 31" tires I was able to walk through the "hard" trails. Only once did I find a place that turned me back due to lack of a locker. It's fun and scenic; there's even a good chance of damage when you lean over against some ancient rock wall in a big rut, but finding a real challenge is itself a challenge. Sadly I didn't run into any other Rovers on the trails! Plenty of them on the roads and on farms at least. Of course, it was mid-week most of the time I was there so not as many people out playing (intentionally on my part...avoid crowds)

80K modern Land Rover with more electronics to fail and steel wheels?! Wow, times have changed, and reliability isn't exactly what older LR's are known for, but I'd Still vote older is easier. Nothing a V8 swap wouldn't solve. 😎

The 4.4 v8 that came in the lr3 is by far the most reliable engine theyve used. Even today. I have 284k miles on mine. All original drivetrain.

I thought the straight 6 Defender couldn’t get the white Steelies because of the required brake size? Don’t you have the Steelies on the Defender?

Where did you get 19inch bf goodrich tires for the D3? I have BF Goodrich KO2s on my Defender, but I can't find 19 inch bfgrich tires in the UK.

With all the computers, complex systems, and various sophisticated engines in the modern Defender, it’ll never age into a good, affordable used vehicle like the LR3 and LR4. When it gets 6+ years old, it’ll steadily become unreasonably expensive and impractical to sustain. The sheer number of systems and ECUs will make maintaining it a nightmare. Yet, I’m sure JLR (Tata) is okay with that. They make excellent, high-performance vehicles. People love them. They’re not in business to sell long-lived vehicles. I have a 2013 LR4 with the 375 HP V8. It’s a fantastic value if you’re ok with maintaining a car without a warranty.

The lr3 and 4 also have loads of computers. Especially compared to the D2. I love the look of the LR4, but timing chains are notorious for going bad.
@gkcamden9050
@gkcamden9050 Ай бұрын
@@krover01 Yep. Like most used cars, LR4s have some issues. But they are well-known and documented. If the few known problems with the LR4 are addressed, they’re good used vehicles that are more comfortable, luxurious, and capable than most. If you (or the prior owner in my case) sort the timing chain issue, the normally aspirated Ford 5-liter V8 in the LR4 is solid, uncomplicated, and powerful. And yes, they have computers too, but my point is that the number of computers in new cars has exploded. The new Defender is a poster child of that complexity. Yet, if you’re going to try to eliminate all computers (not a bad idea but not easy either), you’re planning to drive something at least two decades old. If you have the money, buy a new car and an extended warranty. If you’ve got a little less money and can afford one of the highly sought-after, reliable old cars, that’s awesome, but you’ll _still_ be sorting out general old car issues . . . or maybe you spend a lot on a vehicle with an LS swap. If you’ve got even less money, you _will_ be dealing with used car troubles of one kind or another. My biggest problem so far with my 11-year-old LR4 is that the AC isn’t cooling as well anymore, so I need to troubleshoot that.
