My homebrew setting is a spacefaring galaxy one. The catch? The black void of space as we know it doesn’t exist. There’s a massive sun, impossibly far away and hailed as a (usually) monotheistic god, up above. Below, there’s an endless sea that’s equally endless in depth. The rest of space is blue sky. The planets are massive floating islands, and each one is a different biome that houses unique plant and animal life, unique races, and unique gimmicks.

I love the mention of chunks missing from your world, it's part of my own world, with many entrances to the underdark, the floating chunks of the world chained to the earth, and the city of lanterns (a society of teiflings(?) Dragonborn, some orcs, and the only place where intelligent undead have gathered as the rejects of the world). I love my little world, even to implementing the normal planes like the Nine layers of hell into an inverted extra-dimensional cone that faces the world, accessible via spacecraft that is still being developed, or a certain very secret cave at the "bottom" of the underdark that you need a map from the gods for. This is too long already but thank you! Awesome video

I've literally been practicing my worldbuilding in a similar way to the example at the end, including using Issue 1 of the magazine XD so far, I've got a destroyed planet that was ravaged to create massive floating cities and an overgrown world under the threat of invading oozes that was once the perfect mechanical paradise before mysteriously falling to ruin. Love the amount of flexibility in the article/system, would highly recommend to everyone, especially new DMs!

The missing chunks world idea reminds me of the cartoon Dragon Hunters. It was a missing chunks world with an interesting BBG. This was out back in 2008 though. Something very interesting to check out.

We talk about Spore all the time outside campaigns. Lol. I miss that game. Always happy to see someone knows about that game. My homebrew is inspired by the eastern fantasy i grew up with where stories are the currency of the universe (Omniscient Readers Viewpoint). The universe is a collection of planes dreamed by the Boundless Dream, an eldritch being that dreams whole planes into existence. Planes have a theme to them that is called the law of the plane (e.g. forest plane has a law of forest). Gods can be born from a myth tied to the law of the plane, powerful beings can usurp that law and become a new god, or the plane can change so much the law changes (e.g. a meteor destroys the forest). One can also do great (or horrible) deeds and create a story powerful enough to become their own myth but not tied to the law of the plane which makes them a threat to the gods. These beings are Legendaries and they usually roam other planes, make demiplanes of their own, or settle in planes with no gods. These are the patrons for warlocks. This makes my players have the wonderful choice of adventuring and building their own stories but have the gods be wary of them, become a Legendary, take the law and become a new god, or use their stories as currency for new subclasses, spells, feats from the interdimensional merchant penguins.

perhaps analog punk where technology developed based on analog computers rather than digital computers. or perhaps meaningpunk where we learned how to work with meaningfulness in computers allowing us to assign meaning to computational constructs.

Web DM did a video on religions in DnD and found out that people don't like monotheism in they're games. I think the reason was that people think it's restrictive? And I have to agree that it is, if that was the case.
@TheClericCorner
@TheClericCorner Жыл бұрын
I think it's only restrictive if you plan on running a game involving the gods. Plenty don't :) but I see why many prefer more!

My homebrew setting exists as a small "blister" of the Material Plane wedged between the Elemental Chaos and the Astral Sea, in the boarder between the Inner and Outer Planes. It's a floating continent, with the Underside of the continent being this world's equivalent to the Underdark. The world is in the beginning stages of an magical-industrial revolution, so the culture is very similar to mid-18th century Europe, but with airships instead of sailing ships. Avatars and aspects of the gods are known to walk among the people of the world, as do dragons who shapeshift into humanoid forms. True giants are extinct, and giantkin like ogres, oni, trolls and verbeeg are fairly rare. Recorded history of this world only goes back just about a thousand to fifteen hundred years, as there was a massive event known as the Cataclysm that wiped out most of the population of the world and brought all preexisting civilizations to ruin. Also, as part of the lingering effects of the Cataclysm, nearly all surviving humans were altered into near-human races like genasi or yuan-ti. Very few baseline humans remain, and they are almost considered an endangered species in the world.

been looking around some of ur videos after the apunkalypse inspiration and realizing theres alot to be thinking about and i really need to slow it down into steps TL/DR i may be going overboard currently fleshing out technology and magic which the magic side is going to take alot of time seeing as im reworking alot of the more powerful spells (as well as adding a mechanic to amplify certain cantrips example being casting mending on ur vehicle thats been damaged and pumping in a 3rd level spell slot which amplifies it into healing the health value of the vehicle) i also would like to look into how the ruins work since my friend and i are doing a 1 on 1 campaign sorta deal to test stuff the first mission hes on is going to a small ruined town during an anomalous storm to recharge these magical batteries called charion crystals, used to power the vehicles, certain hard to find advanced enchanted items, and powerful spells like revivify the storms are going to be based in wild magic which causes spells to go a bit weird sometimes so i wrote down a small table for what happens if it takes effect, and as ud probably suspect since the storms are wildmagic and theyre recharging the crystals, theyre also based in wild magic, so ive added a whole mechanic that happens if u try and use a spell or an effect while the crystal doesnt have enough power, and if the amount is too high and u fail it has a 50% chance to shatter the crystal causing various effects and ive also made things like junker asthetic guns called scavguns which have different mechanics around that and various tiers of ammo called shotbeads that are fitted for different barrel sizes, and if u dont have shotbeads u can use scraps of metal but itll damage the gun so i added a quality system which is lowered by 1 for every shard of metal shot, and can be repaired up to the quality rating ive made a mechanic called decay which is my thoughts on how a necrotic form of radation poisoning would work, my idea atm is if u fail the check and take on a level of decay, it will remove 1 hit die from ur maximum pool and every hit die removed by decay adds a decayed hit die, at the end of a long rest u roll all of the decayed hit dice which damages the creature (for now im saying this isnt reduction to max health) and a creature doesnt outright die if all hit dice are decayed, itd have to roll ur maximum health to kill the creature... and this is all the brief rambling version of it all X3c i may be going a bit overboard

oooh on the note of conflict i did already have it noted down that what "ended" the world was a slowly expanding cloud of necromancy i call "the falling" (mostly so i can say things are pre/post falling) but ofc something like that doesnt just happen, so what caused it, maybe it was a god, or a rift to the shadowfell, and if it was a rift who or what caused it to open

I think just examining the classic Spelljammer AD&D Multiverse chart and the worlds it connected too, say everything... But... If things like Greyspace, Realmspace, Krynnspace, Darkspace, Herospace, Faeriespace, Greatspace, and Clusterspace dont inspire the minds and imaginations of people...then they should look towards things like Celtic Mythology, Chinese Mythology, Japanese Manga/Anime Fantasy (especially from Studio Ghibli)... not to mention good Fantasy books such as EarthSea, Lord of the Rings, and John Carter of Mars... Music from Blue Oyster Cult (especially the ones based on Michael Moorecocks Elric books)... TV Shows like Babylon 5, Stargate SG-1 & Atlantis... And Anime like GATE, and Slayers... Now... along with Dragon Age: Origins & The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (as well as Buffy & Angel, because thats when we originally played, back in the Late 90's-Early 2000's), all of these inspired my own Homebrew world, and its evolved and changed over time, refining its ideas and concepts to Frankenstein a picture from jigsaw puzzle pieces from diffrent boxes...the picture doesn't look right up close, but as you pull back, it blends the colours together until it creates a lovely picture of something... In my case, 3 Primordial Dragons who just do NOT care about the petty sqwabbles of tiny things, because Alien Gods are trying to invade their Sphere...and the troubles of Farmer Bob and his crops not growing...hmmm...not a concern. But damn...if a Cult of Eldritch Worshippers manage to open a path for lesser servent of the Alien Gods to get in... and Sajuuk (Bahamut) or Qwaar-jet (Tiamat) will rip the ENTIRE SKY open to reveal their giant Primordial God Eye, and will strike down anything in that area. So, I guess... Really, the best advice for "upgrading" your campaign is to steer clear of WotC half-@55ed 5E, and consult other media that DID put in the work for worldbuilding and mythology! ..thats MY advice...
