I’ve watched a lot of mosaic videos and your the first I’ve finally found that addresses the finishing of the edges, plus finishing the back and how to hang it. Thank you so very much! I’ve just started watching your videos and after only a few I have learned so much. 😉👍

Thanks for this Peter! I have some Kerdi board that I wanted to use indoors so I didn´t want to use thinset as an adhesive and was wondering what to do about this edges. The epoxy sculpt is a really good idea! It seems you don´t need mesh before using that right?
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t know what Kerdiboard is but when l have used it on Marmox board it wasn’t an issue, l would suggest doing a test first. If the edge is dusty you may need to wipe it down or get some adhesive tape and stick it onto the edge and then remove it to get rid of the dust. 😊

Hi Peter. At what point during the process do you edge with epoxy sculpt.....before or after grout? Thank you for the great videos. They have helped alot as I am self taught.
@TreasuryRoad

Thankyou very much, appreciate that. Thats a very good point, its a personal choice it depends if you want the top tess to be flush with the outside, you would AS the sides first but if you want the side to protrude you would do it last. But theres really no right or wrong it just depends on the look you are after. :)

Hi Peter, thank you for your great, informative videos. I have made a mosaic mural (4’ x 3’) for outdoors. I found the Laticrete sanded grout in many colors and am done grouting, but I want to clarify the edging process. I used Wedi board that is about 1/2 “ mounted (with gorilla glue) on weather treated plywood as the base. So, can I just edge with the epoxy sculpt or do I need to apply the mesh & thinset? Also, do you have videos on how to hang mosaics or create large easels for displaying mosaic murals? Mine weighs about 50 lbs. and I’m not sure how to display it outside. Thank you for any advice you can give.

Thanks so much Susan, I cant answer specifically to your job as there are far to many variables like any job that I cant see. I have never used Gorilla glue on a job and any wood including marine grade plywood which will generally not have longevity to it if the piece is outside as it interacts with the environment its in regardless of how much prepping is done to it. If I am reading this correctly you have adhered the plywood to the back of the Wedi board to create a thicker substrate if this is correct I would have used thicker 20mm Wedi board and skipped the plywood. I would definitely consider using Apoxie Sculpt rather than the thinset for the edge but how well its actually going to work is another thing as the weakest link will be the Gorilla Glue and the plywood, do a small test first to ensure it bonds well and make sure the edges are free of dust. If you had just used Wedi board then the mesh and thinset is done first and then the substrate is mosaicked. Generally if you are hanging your piece hangers would be added first before mosacking to Wedi board, I would have considered the French Cleat system. I have videos on all these procedures, take the time to go through them carefully starting at the start. :)

@@TreasuryRoad thank you for your quick response. Gorilla glue is ridiculously strong so I won’t be able to remove the treated plywood at this point without damaging the mosaic. I live in New York and we have snowy winters here, so will probably put it in a sheltered location or bring it inside during bad weather. I bought the epoxy sculpt and will do a test first. Thanks again for your advice.

@@susanbarell8652 Thanks Susan. Bringing it in may help you as the conditions any mosaic is in can take its toll on a piece, yes I wouldn't think you will be able to separate the two pieces now they are adhered together. :)

Can I check Peter..do I need to use the tape around the edge..if the Marmox board is only say 6mm/10mm? Or do I just use thinset to finish it..without the tape? Another great video..thanks!
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 4 жыл бұрын
Thankyou so much. I wouldn't worry about it on 6mm and you can probably get away without it on 10mm, try a piece of scrap Marmox without the tape and see what you think on the 10mm. Many dont use the tape at all but it helps add strength to the edges. :)

Thanks so much. Can you tell me if I want to use tesserae for the edges of a piece …do you do the edges first or last if not using epoxy clay…to make them meet evenly…especially for a tabletop ?Thanks
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 9 ай бұрын
Thankyou so much Anna. Its a personal preference some people mosaic the edges of their pieces and others don't, some mosaic the edges last. Generally the edges are done first on a mosaic so as you don't see a grout line on the front where the tiles on the sides meet the top. If you're using a sanded grout you definitely dont want that exposed on any edges because that can chip off because its really a filler. Some people will just grout the side of a mosaic however that's not really best practice. The manufactures have the maximum grout line widths that their grout should not exceed. Thanks for watching and commenting. :)

Thanks Peter for this video. Can I use black Grout instead of using paint for edging? Another question is about apoxy sculpt. Can I paint it or is it durable for out side?
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 4 жыл бұрын
Grout shouldn't be used for the sides as it doesn't have any adhesive properties, it can chip off or fall off further down the track. You dont have to paint Apoxie Sculpt if being used outside that will not effect its durability. :)

@@TreasuryRoad , is there any other color for apoxy sculpt? Or can I use acrylic paint for coloring it for inside?
@TreasuryRoad

@@mozhdehnouripayam9470 Apoxie Sculpt comes in other colours but the natural coloured one has the best adhesives properties, I believe it can be painted and stained, you can go to the Aves website for more information. :)

Hi Peter, I'm wondering whether I could stick beach pebbles to sealed wood using cement based adhesive for indoor use? I have made home made mesh substrates layered with cement based adhesive, but can't figure out how to put them in a frame once I have stuck beach pebbles on with thick adhesive.

Hi Peter, please may I ask what substrate is the bird in this video. I find cutting out with a hand jigsaws difficult. I was thinking of purchasing a scroll saw. I'd like your opinion, please . Steph
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad Жыл бұрын
Hi Stephanie, the bird was cutout of MDF. Using a jigsaw works well but for small items it can be a little fiddly, I did own a scroll saw and it took a bit of getting used to for small pieces however it worked well. Because I was selling these shapes these were commercially cut but I was using a scroll saw originally to do the test samples. Thankyou for watching and commenting. :)
