+TheTsugnawmi2010 Actually, it was the other way around. Deathmatches have been a thing since the 80s over there (at least in the form they are in in this video, you can go back to the 60s and find barbed wire matches here in the US, but those matches are nothing like these)

+TheTsugnawmi2010 It was more like that Paul Heyman marathoned a month of extreme Japanese shows before getting ECW off the ground and thought, "Maaaaybe we won't go that route." And then Zandig did the same a few years later and went "JEEEEEZUS!", and CZW was born.

We need Jim Ross to commentate some of these, he would have a heart attack & choke up his BBQ with these insane matches. Joey styles would be cool too, but Good ol' JR is the man that makes it so much better by his commentating. "By Gawd!! I knew this was going to be a slobber knocker tonight, but it's turned out into a pure all out war! Wait, what's he doing here, aw come on, not this way!!!!! Think about what's at stake, GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY!! He, he, just nearly kill him! His body is broken! Get the EMTs!! My god!! He just sent him straight to hell!! No remorse for that s.o.b stop the damn match enough is enough, he's tougher than a two dollar steak if he is even able to function right now!" Joey Styles - "OH MY GOD!!!!!"

@CRob172

It's only BJW, DDT and a couple of others, NJPW is more traditional, it's the reason why bullet club got so over as heels is because of using weapons and interference in matches which us American fans are used to but in Japan it is 95% clean matches, but NJPW you still have strong style which is legit strikes and they do fucking hurt, just ask shibata, his career is basically over because of a stiff head butt to Okada, but if I had the choice of taking a legit kick to the head or getting hit in the head with a light tube I'd take the kick anyday of the week

Only if you're one of the misfits who can't get booked in NJPW or the respectable promotions anymore. Even FMW, a promotion I actually like despite them being pretty much the OG on this stuff and had a roster filled with guys and a few gals that couldn't hack it in the bigger promos, at least had people who could work and they told a damn fine story when they wanted to.

I'm not saying go over there and watch one, I'm saying go be a part of one. They happen in the states all the time. Don't sit here on the internet and talk about how it's the manly wrestling while you're sitting on your couch. Anyone who thinks it's the best form of wrestling needs to get their ass in the ring and have one of these shit show matches. More often than not the crowd is uncomfortable seeing it live. Hell if you've never even seen one in person you have very little room to talk about it being superior. Rarely is it acceptable, it has to be the payoff to a major feud and it has to resolve something.

You have no idea how much I loved watching this stuff about 20 years ago. Any Japanese hardcore I could get my hands on, I did. I had to buy actual videotapes back then. The King Of The Deathmatch Tournament (won by Cactus Jack, aka Mick Foley) was the first Japanese hardcore wrestling I ever saw. I knew about ECW (and had been watching it for a while) so was familiar with hardcore wrestling. But Japan took it to an entirely new level, one Paul Heyman never went to. (Likely because he'd have been sued by someone if he tried.) I remember seeing that Piranha deathmatch on one of my tapes. Well, maybe not that exact match, but a piranha deathmatch. I don't know if there was more than one. The one I saw was Mitsuhiro Matsunaga vs Kendo Nagasaki. I loved it as a kid. Thought it was great. This list is great. Reminds me of the mid/late 90s.
