Young man, one of the reasons--if not the main reason--why people didn't wear white after Labor Day was because most of the white clothes that people wore (which weren't uniforms) used to be made of thinner materials. Here on the East Coast--the Philadelphia, Boston, New York region--wearing a pair of white pants, a white shirt, or a white jacket usually meant that you froze your ass off after Labor Day. By Halloween, it was cold outside, and by Thanksgiving, it was full-on winter. You just couldn't buy white jeans, corduroys, or any other fall and winter clothing material in white (or even off white) because they didn't exist for the most part, unless you somehow had them custom ordered. So not wearing white after Labor Day wasn't just bullshit or a fashion faux pas, it was a utilitarian matter. Slowly, that changed when designers and manufacturers offered more clothing in heavier materials in white. I don't even think it's really been gaucherie to wear white after Labor Day since before the early 1990s. And now because of climate change, wearing those lighter (white) clothes after Labor Day is pretty much a necessity because it's still pretty hot out.
