8 MORE Real Racing Circuits Saved by Sim Racing

When a real-world racing venue closes down, it’s always a somber moment considering each racing circuit always has its own chapter of history in the motorsports genre. Some famed courses have been abandoned, lost to time and overgrown as the world moves on without it.
Thankfully, we live in a world that includes racing games. Some of these tracks are lucky enough to be preserved digitally for future generations to enjoy. We’ve previously visited this back in 2021 with an original list of eight racetracks, but today we’ve curated eight more.
Titles such as iRacing, Automobilista 2, Richard Burns Rally and even the lesser-known Indianapolis 500 Evolution game have all been able to preserve racing history, whether they knew it at the time or not.
Here’s our list of eight more racing circuits that either no longer exist, or will likely never return to the real-world racing calendars, that you can still go and experience through sim racing titles. As we asked last time, let us know what other tracks we may have missed in the comments below!

@@breaseeee70 I don’t see it as sad, more positive tbh. I think sim racing could be a good virtual recording of old tracks when they disappear in real life, thanks to laser scans etc. We can race old cars on new tracks, or new cars on old tracks, in a virtual world with limitless possibilities. Not the same as the real thing no, but better than mere black & white photos.

Happening already since the big earthquake in 2021 that landslided Ebisu and the owner decided it was not worth it to re asphalt and thus re‐converted Minami course to a dirt rallycross track.

Two F1 tracks from the top of my head come to mind: - Hockenheim (pre-2002 layout). Officially in any F1 game of the era, like Grand Prix 4. - Silverstone (the Bridge layout or old GP). iRacing.

Two reasons (actually three - Nurburgring with different Sector 1... and Magny Cours "old layout" (diffferent final chicane part). why I always have F1 99-02 installed on my computer. Even if just for 2-3 laps a month. "Nostalgia".

Ebisu circuit and the old Fuji circuit layouts in Japan would be neat to feature. Fuji from the 80s is easy to access in Gran Turismo, but older than that I'm not sure. Ebisu in particular is intresting since its featured as a drift track in some games, but in racing configuration it's much rarer.

Need for Speed Shift has Ebisu South and West, and Shift 2 also includes the touge course. Although that game hardly counts as a sim.

Ontario Motor Speedway, arguably the world's first "supertrack" that hosted Indy car, NASCAR, IMSA, drag racing and the one-off F1 vs. F5000 Questor Grand Prix, was in Papyrus' "NASCAR Legends" (even though Ontario's first NASCAR race was in 1971, one year after the season in which the game was set).

4:41 Riverside also exists in a remade form in some of the EA Nascar games! It's called the Old Spice or Boulder circuit. It has more banking and is run in the opposite direction, but it's still a really neat tribute.

Rockingham is a track based in the UK which was an oval track. It later turned into a car park. Live For Speed has a laser scanned version of the track preserving the track.

Curitiba is punch in the gut for the brazilian racing. The track is awesome to race both in real and sim racing, a bunch of people rallied so it wouldn’t be demolished but to no use, it’s really saddening to see it go.

You should make an episode for modded tracks. Stuff like the Targa Florio project for GP Legends is a milestone in historic track recreation.

As someone who lives in Curitiba and went to the track, a couple of times it's sad to see the track go away. I was practically crying seeing images of it. Definitely deserved better

I have been to Jacarapegua and Curitiba to watch a lot of different races, from Indycar to WTCC, as well as Brazilian Stock Car, Porsche Cup and so on. Curitiba in particular was a very special place for me to go. It was a bit depressing seeing these two Brazilian tracks in the list. At least we can still enjoy them in Automobilista.

Longfords '67 setting comes from it original recreation for Grand Prix Legends. Gorgious in rF2. Hearing of the loss of Curitiba saddened me. Won't cry for Adria though. Yeah and Pukekohe was real fun.

I'm always filled with tears when i here about racetracks being demolished for property. If only motorsport wasn't that expensive to compete in I'm pretty sure many tracks would have been saved. I'm curious about the cost of track days and how they work, but even so, just a 20min go-kart race with hired karts is out of my budget range, sadly

Thank you so so much for including and Talking about Pukekohe. It is my home circuit. I grew up around Motorsport, and was there as a kid to now (27). I finally had the opportunity to drive full speed of one of their track days. She was and still is an amazing circuit. Our last race is the end of the year, which will be a huge send off with 10 class including Super Trucks.

@TraxionGG Hampton Downs is the track, but Pukie will always be home. And she was unique, I'd you tried to rebuild the exact some track elsewhere, you will never get it right. The bumps down the front straight and through turn 1, Ford mountain etc. And she's also the fastest Drifting track in the southern Hemispheres, clocked at 205kph entry

The game Nascar Legends from 1999 is based off the 1970 Nascar Cup Series and has the since abandoned tracks of Riverside, Ontario Motor Speedway, and Texas World Speedway.

I also remember very well Enna Pergusa from GTR2. Incredible fast track with intimidating chicanes, that hosted FIA GT and F3000. I loved that track. That's why when I had the opportunity to travel to Sicily a few years ago, I entered the circuit (it was open for everyone) and when walking through the kerbs of the first turn, childhood memories came to me. As for the track, when I went there it was abandoned but I think a few years ago the 24h series run in there.

From my knowledge, Pergusa Is still used. At least, there Is a race calendar for 2023

And then there are the tracks still in use, but the layout has changed so much that it may as well be a different circuit, where the historic layouts have been preserved thanks to sims.

I think everyone loved Curitiba on Race 07, I am also guessing because it was the first race of the season, it was the one that we all played the most 😂 Also, the Porto circuit was crazy!

@@TraxionGG Porto was crazy! I still play Race 07 from time to time, and Brno has a special place too. But Curitiba takes the number one in my opinion!😅 Since I started playing Automobilista 1 and 2 I was so surprised to see how many cool and fun tracks Brazil had

Seeing all these tracks being preserved in these old games even without the benefit of mods is really awesome. I'd love to see a video on unique modded circuits eventually, but this is a great selection of official stuff regardless.

Another track that qualifies is the Detroit Grand Prix circuit, also known as the Belle Isle Circuit. With racing in Detroit going back around the Rennaissance Center this year, the Belle Isle circuit will no longer be used. Fortunately, it's on iRacing for future virtual racing.

There is still a piece of riverside memorialized. Several of the street names in the area are of racing drivers alluding to the history of the area

Great stuff! I enjoyed 1000's of laps of the version of Riverside that was converted from GPL to race in the GTP Mod for Nascar2003. I used to drive by that shopping center every few months. There is a commemorative plaque in the parking lot of the Shopping Center, so some of its' history is still intact. The original Marquee was present for years, just with Home Depot Advertising, etc. on it.

1:55 the Rio Circuit was also driveable in the somewhat forgotten Newman/Haas Racing from 1998 which was on PsOne and PC.

Myrtle Beach Speedway on iRacing down in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Myrtle Beach Speedway had some big names such as the Earnhardts (Ralph, Dale Sr., Dale Jr., and Kelley), the Pettys (Lee, Richard, Kyle, and Adam), and Jeff Gordon. They held a lot of late model events most notably the Myrtle Beach 400 which is now at Florence Motor Speedway renamed as the Charlie Powell Memorial 400 with its last winner at the track being Will Burns in 2019 before moving to Florence Motor Speedway in 2020. They even held the Myrtle Beach 250 for the NASCAR Busch Series (NASCAR Xfinity Series) with its last winner at the event was Jeff Green in 2000. It's capacity was 12,000. It was an Asphalt track. It's length was 0.538 miles (0.866 km). It's turns was 13°. It's straights were 4° front, 3° back. They've even had the NASCAR Racing Experience, some Monster Truck events, etc. It really was a great track back then, now it's just rubble, and nothing much is there anymore. R.I.P Myrtle Beach Speedway 1958 - 2020

Thank you for including pukekohe Park. I would have suggested it otherwise, It's a great track. My local track. And it's going to be missed, by alot of people, I still hold out hope it will be saved, the Toca version is great for what it is, but the current version on rf2 is the best currently available one, I wish they had the no chicane version, and the old club circuit loop though. When iracing drops it this year, alot of people will lose their shit

Well said mate. I was born in Pukekohe so the track has always held a special place in my heart. I went to the final Supercars race there last year and it was such a bittersweet feeling when it was all over. Easily one of the best things I've ever done in my life that I won't soon forget. Needless to say I'm extremely thankful that iRacing are preserving it so future generations can continue to enjoy it alongside Oran Park which still features regularly in official sessions for the slower series' on the sim. It'll be a day one buy from me that's for sure.

Excellent video. I would allow myself the liberty to add one more to your list with a slight caveat. A circuit that never was - The Sliven International Circuit near Sliven, Bulgaria. Work was started at the same time as the Hungaroring and had similar design. The Hungarians however finished theirs in record time, and as such the Soviets saw no need for a second Grand Prix circuit in the Eastern Block and pressured the government into abandoning the project. Work slowed and when in 1989 the communist government was overthrown, the country had bigger problems to deal with than an unfinished racing track and so it remains to this day. The groundworks were complete and a shanty town spawned near it. To this day Bulgaria doesn't have a purpose built racing curcuit. Sliven International however exists as recreation in rFactor 2 and an Assetto Corsa conversion.

This is the first video I have watched of yours and really good content! Not sure if it has been mentioned but the original Kyalami track that hosted F1 from the 60's to the 80's is lost in reality but available on AMS 1 if memory serves and seems it was used in AMS 2 as well

Wow, proud to see the AIC (Autódromo Internacional de Curitiba) here but sad because we don't have it anymore. It had glorious days with multiple categories like Brasilian Stock Car, Truck Series, World Series, and some touring car championships like WTCC. It was famous for the drag races too. But now we don't have it anymore. In 2022 the AIC was sold to a building construction company and will turn into residential buildings. Street races are growing again, and it comes with more traffic accidents. I hope someday we have an official track to race here in Curitiba again.

You can also mention Circuit de Rouen - Les Essarts (France), which is featured officially in 1998 game "Grand Prix Legends". The track was using open roads which still exist nowadays, you can stilll drive partially on it. The track is also available in Project Cars 2.

I do agree about saving these memories of racetracks. I said that since Saugus Speedway is still around but used as a flea market they still have the ability to scan the track. I know it’s like a parking lot but the history is there for west coast bullrings and early SuperTrucks history

Charterhall in the Scottish Borders, where Jim Clark started his career. Not very active but its in a very secluded location and its a pity that it isnt used for anything anymore

-Nazareth Speedway closed in 2004 but still exist in some EA Sports Nascar games on PS2 -Monza oval, no longer used in real life due bad shape, but playable on Rfactor -Imola, Pre 1995 layout in Grand Prix 2(ironically game takes in 1994 season where Roland Ratzenberger & Ayrton Senna died)

A track that I know that is saved thanks to simracing is the Grenzlandring (Wegbergring).. this track was used for bikes and F2 / F3 cars between 48-52 and closed after a big accident. You can technically still race on it as it's part of a freeway now

Another game to look at for some courses is CART Flag to Flag on the Sega Dreamcast (better than Spirit of Speed, I promise). Not only does it include a couple courses mentioned in your videos (Cleveland and Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet) but it has a few more no longer in use street courses (Detroit, Vancouver, Houston and the Gold Coast of Australia) and it has the currently SBNO Nazareth Speedway, which has hosted a lot of events in most types of American racing.

See Circuito da Boavista in Portugal. Awesome track, previouslly called Mini Nordschleife by ex-F1 driver Nicola Larini and favourite track of many WTCC starts. It had multiple versions, was home of the F1 Portuguese GP for many years as well

For the next episode, maybe the Solitude-Rennstrecke in close proximity of Stuttgart. It was a street course in the 50s and hosts the Solitude Revival event once a year aswell as one of Europe's largest motorcyclists meet ups. After googling apparently it exists in Project Cars.

I like these tracks in sims mostly to drive cars made long after said tracks/layouts no longer existed (i.e. driving the Porsche 919 around the 1964-1972 layout of Le Mans) idk, I just like the idea of a '60s/'70s crowd watching modern cars fly by

Maybe a little late to the party, but Circuito da Boavista (Porto, Portugal) is available in the Race09 WTCC game. Although is a street circuit and the streets are still there is known that at least in the foreseeable future no races will be held in there

The version of Langhorne Speedway that exists in Indy 500 evolution technically never existed in real life. The layout of the track in game is the original dirt layout, but in the game it is paved. When the real life track was paved in 1965 it took more of a "D" shape to it instead of the original ellipse oval

The Indy car game that has riverside can be found on the Wii, it was a great game but it could be difficult to advance the game so be warned if you do find it

10:35 the track was at the eastern side of Curitiba, not western. To be 100% accurate, it was actually located in an adjascent city called Pinhais. That river above the track photo is the border between Curitiba (east) and Pinhais (west). :)

NASCAR heat 5 has the auto club track. This year in 2023 was the last year that the track will be used and the entire track is going to be made into a much smaller track. Also Project cars 2 has the old hockenheimring and the old spa-francorchamps

Wakefield park will sadly join this list due to having to close due to urban sprawl encroaching into the track. And their is sadly the possibility of the famous sandown track being added as well

Maybe the FIA should (in my opinion, they really must) demand a track due for closure to be laserscanned for the vault, so it can be revived in racing simulators in the near or far future. So many great tracks were already gone before sim racing could digitize them, so sad. One such example is Brooklands in the UK.

Video games have a lot of value in terms of conservation. Assassins Creed unity had the most realistic 3d model of Norte dame and was actually used to aid in the reconstruction after the fire.

you can find a few games that are either officially in or modded into the game. sad some of these are long gone for the modern race tracks.

All the sims should share the same file format for the circuits. This would help a lot to preserve the circuit memory because, with what we have today, you just need one decade or less to vanish the opportunity of racing in there before the game developers shut down their servers or the game came out of the stores taking with it those circuit files while nowadays sims lack them.

Texas World Speedway showed up in NFS ProStreet. I know it’s definitely not a sim, but apart from Shift, I think it’s the closest NFS will ever get to being one. Also, I’m pretty sure F1 2020 has the Hanoi circuit that was never used. I don’t know if any others have it or not, or even if it’s been mentioned before.

So sad know about this tracks....i shocked to know about Adria.....Unfortunelly my hometown and near of my home, Curitiba now are demolished to be a commercial / residencial area....But the builds was estimated to be finished at this year, but i don't believe in that. Lost our circuit for nothing! Congrats to this real estate speculation...(for info, the area of Circuit since 1990 at today increased x10 - x15 times!)

Not the most exciting track in the world I know but huge history….Brooklands in the UK. Some of it still stands but most was demolished.

The thing that pains me the most about pukekohe is that horse racing should be 100x more likely to be banned because of the ethics of it. The Auckland Council has Greyhound Dog racing in it's last legs even! All the rich people that like betting on horses can do it for cars, have actual visible sponsorships on the cars, AND not get hated for supporting the cruelty these horses go through in training (they can lie all they want but we all know its a cruel industry).
