Hello Jim and Steph from Louisiana! I love the videos you both are doing now, because they are long and as always informational. I curl up on my sofa and watch them, sometimes over and over while taking notes. I’m a very new gardener and I have learned so much from you both. Because of you I have about 11 azaleas in my yard. They are amazing and beautiful. Can’t wait until tomorrow when you start again. Thanks, Karen

Mount Airy Fothergilla is a nice addition! I’ve been so impressed with it in my garden, between the interesting flowers & beautiful fall color. I remember staking it and some leaves burning after I planted it, but it has looked fantastic ever since. Sunshine Ligustrum is planted next to it and doesn’t look great.. the only shrub that doesn’t seem to like the S-SW side of my house.

We particularly like the old school prostrate plum yew as a ground cover in our woodland garden spaces but note, that what deer eat can differ geographically . These plants have always been deer proof for me, but now living in New England, we do get occasional deer browse in the coldest winter months…

Jim, Ornamental grass question: I haven't been able to get out & cut back my ornamental grasses. Will the old growth prevent the new growth from coming up? My thoughts--except for fire or hungry herbivores, there's nothing in nature cutting them back, yet they manage to come back year after year w/out problem, right? 🤔 Thank you. 😊

Love Franky Boy - but wow, that gets big - easily 5 x 5 if not larger…. Whipcord is something I would consider on a foundation to avoid pruning (to retain its natural unkempt habit) at least here in Zone 6 New England

Lovely! We had three 70* days here and now heading back to our usual temps of low to mid-70’s here in the East Bay Hills of SF Bay Area. Nights are still in the upper 40’s. It may get to the very low 50’s soon. The container soil finally reached 51* so planting a few determinate tomatoes, several zucchini and cucumbers. Still harvesting snow peas and lettuces. The ranunculus continue to show off wonderful colours. Thanks for showcasing so many specimen plants!!

Getting the "BlackBerry" chill in the SE. I'm bundled up this morning north of Atlanta. The tropicals are back inside for a few nights. The Baptisia and Asclepias are coming up. I'm so impressed with the native Columbine I finally got started, still blooming. My unknown Phlox I've named "Feminasi" is in full bloom. It's super locally aggressive but doesn't seed. The patch is 15' × 15' in four years, 1'-1 1/2' high, soft pink and fragrant. It's an industrial Phlox that I wish I could accurately identify. It does NOT play well with others but doesn't require any good soil or fertilizer. I cut it late winter though it's semi evergreen.

Question... I planted a Mt Airy Fothagillia (sp) under a Lg old pine tree in 2021. It isn't growing very much - almost died, trimmed it up and it's still here but it didn't bloom this spring. Maybe it doesn't like where it lives? Location is Marietta GA. Have always had a difficult time growing around this GrandDad pine.

We have False Solomon's Seal in our backyard wooded area, it doesn't seem to be as aggressive as the true variety.
@katiekane5247

I've never seen the native true Solomon Seal be truly aggressive. The variegated cultivar is, I suspect it's an Oriental hybrid. I've seen patches of the native in the woods expand slowly but never to the extent that it crowds out other plants

I came to watch the gnarly hole digging! :) The It's A Breeze Groundcover Rose looks promising. We're into our 5th season with the Coral Drifts roses here in Central Texas (8b), and despite proper pruning, clean-up and full sun for 8+ hours, this is the 2nd straight spring with yellow leaves (no veining) and Black Spot. This year has been particularly bad. What was once modestly low maintenance, the Drifts have become a thorn in my side (no pun intended). I would pull them and go with something like Lantana and Gaillardia, but the "boss" has vetoed that (for now).

Hi Jim, just curious your advice on when you can begin limbing up a Holly. I have a few Nelly Stevens Holly in the yard and they’ve been in for a couple years. I’d like to limb them up into trees and I don’t know when I can begin that process?

Just got 3 of the pink skyscraper salvia from BBs. In your BB shopping video last week you say it can get 3’ x 3’? So the tag lies as it often does. Speaking of - a great salvia I don’t think I’ve seen there is miniata - would be an annual for us, but it’s a really nice woodland friendly salvia.

For the plants that are hardy to zones 4-5, I'm wondering whether they can grow in the west if they're native to the east? I don't suppose I'll see them in the local nurseries.

It's not technically a yew, it's a Cephalotaxus. They look similar, but for some reason the deer don't eat them. We do very few actual yews here. I do have one though
