+Mohammed Hamza Funny but in truth this has a LOT of potential usage. It's very cool that they use their position to pioneer some things we obviously wouldn't have the gear or money to try out. If you wanted to make a gaming café, set up large gaming room in a ho(s)tel, any of the other imaginable options without having a seperate computer for each taking up space this video/series is extremely helpful and interesting. I hope they continue looking at this until they manage to create a setup realistic enough in usage, price that people could start using and building similar machines. I'm thinking the board, case manufacturers just need to make a dedicated solution. Maybe even if it is in a "produce on demand" form factor given the potentially limited market for these kinds of things. Sharknado on the other hand is a fluke in every way imaginable but perhaps as a bad joke or massively over budgetted, out of control lost bet.

This was very interesting. I like seeing the over the top builds, and I wish I had the resources to do this kind of thing myself! I wonder if you could deal with the card thermal issues by using PCIe breakout cables. I don't know how long you can get those before you start to lose performance. But If you can get a reasonable cable length then you could build a rack on top of the server, add more spacing between the cards and perhaps put some tower fans in the room to move air around better? I'm also interested in the thin client stuff. The zotac mini PC's look interesting. My main work server is at home, so I'm using a Lenovo Miix 300 (atom z3745f) with splashtop to remote access it. It works pretty well but I'd like a bigger screen and keyboard when doing that. For the moment I'll just buy one, hook up the tablet to micro HDMI, slap in a dongle and keyboard/ mouse combo and live with it. But I may update this to a permanent "at her place" zotac mini-pc solution instead.

Sure over a not so great internet connection you'd be looking at 100ms, but what if the service was rolled out like some streaming services where there are a few hundred service hubs so there's almost always something nearby (and therefore around 20ms) and those service hubs communicated with each other for multiplayer gaming. While I still firmly believe having your own hardware would always be better for everything but your wallet, we're not all that far off from cloud gaming being a possibility.

+Augsburg Lp There is apparently more of us :D I wanted dual or quad G34 socket motherboard, as they are relatively cheap on ebay. Initially two AMD 16core opterons 62xx or 63xx, as they are like 50€ each. Some ram ofc, this will be probably the most expensive of the hardware :D. The gpus, well, any secondhand radeon could do, HD 5970s or so for now.. But with this, every VM can have just one gpu. You can not distribute the power dynamically. AMD released first hardware-based virtualization gpu - S7150x2 just this year, so we need to wait for that to come to consumers territory. Also nvidia GRID can be interesting too, but it is software-based mainly, but still very cool.
@FrEEZ1nG8P01nT
@FrEEZ1nG8P01nT 8 жыл бұрын
Suhkma Dheek yeah, that can be a bit of a problem. But TFLOPS and prices.. from what I found, older ATI cards had fewer problems with IOMMU than nvidia ones. And for r9 nanos, I think that was just temporarily problematic due to still new buggy drivers. We will see.. I would like to see current state of this, especially with KVM or even openstack :D That would be nice.

wat? its plugged into display port isnt it just a wireless display port connector?
@hellterminator
@hellterminator 8 жыл бұрын
cakebrin3r No. Steam needs to think there's a screen connected in order for the streaming to work. This thing just takes in the video stream (and throws it away) and sends EDID saying it's a 4k 60Hz monitor. Its only purpose is to convince the graphics card that there's a screen connected (even though there isn't one).

Do more videos toying with this concepts! I'd love to see something closer to what normal people might need or use... For example, how would a Ryzen 2700X with 2 GPUs perform for two gaming stations. Would it be possible to have a variable resources allocation in the case that one of the users needed more cores to encode a video or something like that? I'm really hopping that the next upgrade for my wife and kid (both are gamers!) to be some sort of VM env to save some space and reduce cable management in our home...

+LinusTechTips Although I guess using 4U blanks and mounting a rad would work as well. Or a cheap case and just destroy it to put rads everywhere since your cooling so many 980TIs. That would probably work out to be the best option. Shouldn't be too much custom work either since you would only be cutting holes for the rads, a pump, and a res, and mounting them. This could work...

@svampebob007

+LinusTechTips DO IT. Although the installation might be a night mare... try putting 10 GPUs into their respective PCI slots? What you should do is get the GTX 980 Hydro Copper edition, those blocks have upward facing ports. If you then attach quick disconnect fittings you'd be able to plug in the cards individually. You can then connect them through small quick disconnect bridges and have them in series. It's easier to remove a single card in case you need to, but would make the last card about 20-25 C warmer then the first since the water would rise about 2-3C per block. or use a long bridge with multiple T blocks and quick disconnects to have them run in parallel.though you'd need some beefy pumps to handle the loss in pressure from 10 blocks, but the cards would run at approximately the same temperature. Another option is do a hybrid parallel/Series, two lines coming in, and split them up to sets of GPUS (5x2, 2x5, 4(GTX980)x2+2(titans) and then combine the lines back up to the rads. It would be an insane water cooling project! with lots and lots of hours of fun aka crying silently in a corner because there's something wrong somewhere.

Did you have a single network cable going to the server or multiple? I would think if all of the network cables were hooked up and setup correctly through a good switch like a Ubiquiti, then the network lag would be negligible. If it's all through a single 1Gbps connection, then I'm surprised at the little lag noticed. Most of it looks like network lag to be honest. I don't think the server was even breaking a sweat.

You don't need 88 threads. This is 8 clients, meaning a single 22 core CPU provides essentially 3 cores 6 threads per. Use 1080s and accept 1080p and you can run 2 clients off a single GPU without too many problems, now you're using 1/2 the hardware which if combined with using 4K streaming hardware at only 1080p (reducing latency) and the reduced heat leading to less thermal throttling, you probably end up with a better experience.

I did something like this but it was 12 vm's with 24 duel core processors. It was part of the University of Utah's super computer that they lent me for a project. Mind you at the time they had replaced their super computer with something new and just had it laying around. I was running it with Centos and could only play Linux based games but it was still a blast. The entire thing weighed about 150lbs and required a special breakout transformer. The gaming that was done on it was fun but just a side project compared the actual super computer tasks that I had to accomplish while me and a team had this computer on loan.

Literally impossible. The fastest anything can go is the speed of light, and at the speed of light the time it would take to go from my house to tokyo is 36 milliseconds. Lower latency is definitely possible, but there's a hard limit as to how low it can go unless our current laws of physics are extremely wrong. edit: and that's the speed of light in a vacuum. The speed of light in an optical fiber is far slower, so the limit with current state-of-the-art materials is actually 54 ms.

So... Steam Streaming is the bottleneck there, right? I mean, I used it, it's pretty awesome, but even a gaming PC and a single thin client (in my case a Windows tablet on top of a docking station working as HTPC) all wired (Ethernet) will still have similar problems (latency, getting wonky at times, dropping resolution, etc). Theoretically, if you build this powerhouse and made wired connections everywhere to use it directly, I guess you could already make a lanhouse or an entire family setup like that. Of course, it'd still be kinda ridiculous the ammount of HDMI and USB cables going around (plus all the signal amplifiers/boosters), but it seems this monster could take it. :P Oh, in the end, I moved my office to the side of my living room and made it like this. Using a wireless keyboard, and a really long HDMI cable. The steam streaming experience wasn't bad... I was very surprised how well it worked, honestly. But man... nothing better than a direct connection. xD

Downside is needing to wire it and the cost, but that would solve the need to bother with HDMI/USB and boosters.

I'm really curious to see what you'd be able to achieve on the new turing architecture with it's optimizations specifically for large scale virtualization. Seems like the tesla t4 cards would actually be pretty ideal for this sort of setup or even something even bigger like your closet server stack idea. I personally brainstormed a business model of sorts for a gaming cafe that would likely be the ideal candidate for such a server. It'd be something repeatable, assuming the system was stable enough for commercial use, enough to be bought in bulk by a company/corporation with a bunch of storefronts to really save a lot of money in both the short and long term as the initial overall cost would probably be lower and upgrade paths should be as well along with the system likely pulling a lot less power overall for the equivalent capabilities in individual towers. Theoretically it would allow for easy upgrades and repair (though I'd imagine if something went down you'd have to shut the whole place down in order to fix it) and would be modular enough to fit different floor plans and layouts as not every location would be identical obviously. I'd also imagine it not being nearly as much of a hassle to upgrade as you'd theoretically be able to add in more cards to upgrade the individual machine's graphical throughput rather than having to sell off old cards to upgrade the system to newer models all at once. Theoretically, such a business model may even allow for a tiered pricing scheme where memberships of a higher price could allot the user with more available power to the station they sign in on.
