Option paralysis is my BIGGEST problem. I recently got a teacher after 20 years of just messing around with the same shit and not getting better, and he doesn't help with this problem either. Every week he just throws new shit at me without checking how I'm doing with the shit he threw at me last week. I'm completely lost.

Same issue here. Found a tutor who was willing to write me a weekly practice checklist. Every week he gives me 3-4 daily practice objectives on a post it. I save all the post its on a page in my practice folder, so I can always go back to objectives I need refreshing on.

Some great points, many of which resonate. I do appreciate that focusing on one aspect locks it in, but I'm at a point now where I can just pick up a guitar & enjoy playing it... So, more often than not, that's what I do, rather than actually practicing... I am slowly adding theory knowledge & techniques, but as I move forward, the motivations have changed from when I first started out... Recently, I've found playing at guitar jams & getting/giving tips with other guitarists has been a really positive thing to do.

LMAO....I am not sure about how much I like your approach to your videos, BUT, I cannot argue with what you are saying,lol....I was that guy in almost all 8 examples until I decided to learn all the new shit, took me a few years and I now see that the more I learn , the more I dont know. I am now a guitar player who knows what I need to practice to be able to play what I want to play live :)

Great video! Inspired me to finally fucking learn every note on the fretboard. Try this friends: Find some way to randomly pick a note on the fretboard. Start with just the first fret. Do this 300 times. Add the second fret and do those 300 times. Add the third fret and do those 300 times. Add the fourth fret and do those 300 times. Not only do you notice that your exercise time per fret gets less with each addition but you will notice that the time it takes you to correctly identify the notes decreases even though you are adding more notes each round. Thanks B!!!

I took lessons for a good while and while there was definite learning there, I felt my lessons lacked the structure I was looking for (even when I voiced I was looking for more structure). My issue is after you learn all this 'shit' ...it's the integration of it all. Loving all the new long form vids Brandon. 👍

Great resources that give a good methodology for progress are Frank Vignola’s Modern Method course on Truefire and Steve Herberman’s Fundamentals Checkpoint on Mike’s Master Classes. They’re both jazz guys but both courses provide solid fretboard orientation in a methodical and efficient way. Good roadmaps both.

‘They tell you time is money like your life was worth its weight in gold’ - Bob Dylan I figure I can play about 5 scales a minute, so 25 times when I set my timer to 5 minutes. So 1,000 reps after 40-5 minute sets, so a total of a bit over 3 hours.

Brendon, I ne been playing for over 50yrs as a pro You are so young and at the same time you speak so simple and wise, and, ONLY THE ONES WHO REALLY UNDERSTAND MUSIC CAN EXPLAIN THING SIMPLY, so many times I encountered guitarist who when asked why had "because" as the ONLY answer, so, I sincirely recomend your way to EVERY young enthusiast KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK,👍💪🔥

Absolutely bang on with your "option paralysis" statement. Guilty as charged here. I must have hundreds of videos saved. I even get overwhelmed with my guitar classes with too much info so I recently decided to simplify. With the help of my instructor, we have built a plan in which I concentrate on only a few things right now. Theory, specifically scales and modes, chords and rhythm......and practice, practice, practice. I have noticed an improvement with my playing already. 👍

When I started taking guitar lessons, my mom had told the teacher that I already knew stuff about guitar because she had assumed that I knew how to change chords and stuff like that. She thought this cause I was experimenting with it in my room pretty often. So when it came time to my first lesson the teacher didn’t teach me any basics. No open chords, no strumming patterns or anything. So the first song he taught me was “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and it was difficult to say the least. So now that I’ve stopped going there I’ve began learning the basics but now I’m stuck on where to put my fingers when I’m looking at tabs.

I’ve gotten to the level where I can play 99% of the songs I’d ever want to learn and play them pretty damn good. I might even fool you into thinking I’m not intermediate. I still can’t improvise to save my life and putting off actually learning what it is that I’m already doing. Seems tough to take the next step without proper lessons

Guys, do anyone rememeber what are the 4 "pillars" of practicing guitar? I'm trying to remeber on of his shorts where he say 4 points of practicing. It was something like "memorizing the fretboard, music theory, technique, ..." and there was another one. If you know what video it was please send me.
