In retail pharmacy today, corporate wants you to work a few years and then move on along. They don't want you hanging around and building up vacation time and participating 100% to get the 401K match. Corporate wants to hire new graduates at lower pay and who have too much debt to participate in the 401K. Also, health insurance benefits are less expensive for the company when their work force is younger. If you stay too long you become a target. Ask any older pharmacist.

I think it all depends on the company you choose. There's a lot of positive things in retail pharmacy. Though it is stressful at times, you can build some amazing relationships with patients that become your family as the days and years pass by. They trust you and they cut you some slack. You actually feel fulfilled because you make a difference and they actually listen to you after you have developed a bond with them. You can really enjoy the casualness of your job and joke with customers and the coworkers which makes it fun. You can have a great team and get work done efficiently while also listening to music and enjoying work. You don't have to deal with hospital egos and unnecessary drama. You also need to think about if you as a person need to see someone's gratitude to feel fulfilled. Inpatient, a lot of times, you're behind a computer reading charts and patients come and go and you loose that inter personal touch of helping someone. Outpatient you actually see and hear people thanking you. It's a good feeling to have and is so meaningful. You need to always be in control and have that kind of personality where your assertive and know how to prioritize and give tough love. You need to be bold and make hard decisions at times. Not everyone will be happy. People will sometimes have to wait and that's fine. Don't overstress yourself and always be in control. You need to be real with people not just "customer service" and robotic. You need to be a leader and know how to delegate the workflow and be efficient.

Totally wrong in retail they cannot replace you. People are walking out every day. Enrollment is down because chains are over working people. How many times has Walgreens closed stores. CVS not far behind.Not sure where you live but they call us every day to work.True they say we have half hour lunch but it is not truly given.

As someone that has gone back-and-forth with community pharmacy and other opportunities I have been saying all of these for years to anyone that would listen! I'm in the middle of this, so on one hand, there are almost no jobs to apply for with the saturation of our field, so you take what you get, now on the other hand, if you have a safety blanket to fall back on then by all means wait for the perfect job, but honestly we all have to eat.

I do agree when it comes to experience but also I believe it depends on the company's execution of mangament and leadership that affects the employees.

Walgreens pharmacy is the worst, horrible and sucks for them and wish they had better standards, but their slowly reaching the end of the # of replaceable people up in Alaska. And gonna be interesting to watch what the future has for them

I guess being a strong independent woman is a lot harder than it appeared to be. And good luck with that 250k student loan that's not getting forgiven by the taxpayers. Pharmd degrees today are not the equivalent of yesterday's pharmd. Doing and extra year loafing at school is just a mini vacation and you know it. Word
