Considering which is the best Mercedes AMG to buy?
Here's my 8 reasons why the SLK55 AMG is the best car to buy.
The SLK55 AMG is a car which has 360bhp and a 0-62 time of 4.8 seconds, for 2005 this is astonishing speeds. The car has also done the majority of its depreciation which makes a fantastic time to buy them.
With the V8 engine going out of production it is going to become a sought after engine to own alongside the e92 M3, Mercedes C63 and Audi RS5.
The cars have proven to be reliable with low maintenance costs, incredible reliability and reasonable fuel economy reaching up to 32mpg if you really wanted.

I bought a Mars Red 2005 SLK55 2 1/2 years ago for $11,500 Had about 140,000 miles ( now over 170,000). Replaced my 2007 Mars Red SLK280 that I loved and was totaled. I’m a 71 year old lady and love the roar of the car !! My son inherites it when I’m gone. LOL

I purchased mine in 2005 new, still have, never selling it. Makes me smile every drive. 4.9 to 100 is still pretty handy and blows off most cars nearly 20 years it's junior. Had a few minor repairs done, it's now 120k KM and just about to it's refit aka plugs, belts, cover gaskits etc, all the normal m113 stuff. I drive top down unless it's raining, cold is no issue with airscarf. Never use the stereo, the exhaust note is the best sound track around.

On the market for one right now, they're harder to find with low km than what I thought. Says it all about usability. Totally relate with your stereo comment. Own a CL 55 K for years, and its (superb) Bose sound system is used as often as... the toilet cover.

Great video and commentary. I own a 2006 SLK 55 AMG and also a 2004 Lexus SC430. The SLK is like driving a rocket ship or controlling a horse that wants to run. The SC430, also a hard top convertible sports car by the way, drives like a smooth cream puff and is very quiet like a sedan. The wife absolutely loves to drive the SC430. I absolutely love to drive the SLK! Don't mean to sound sexist about it, but those are the facts.

I just sold my Z3M roadster & replaced it with a low mileage R231 SL500 in hyacinth red with cream leather. I'm loving it to bits. I considered an SLK55. But they're almost as expensive. A great little V8 roadster, but less car for the money. SLK55 £55k new. SL500 £85k new but only £3 or £4k more second hand for the SL. And it's an almost all aluminium engineering masterpiece. When I test drove the Slk55 the engine felt special. When I drive my SL500 the whole car feels special

I've got an X-pipe on mine. Also never selling it. It just gets better with age. Beautifully designed and engineered, incredible sound, solid handling (I've been on awesome mountain road trips), some great upgrades on mine, including the same paddle shifts that are on an SLS. If you own one, I'd recommend checking the wire connectors on the fuel pump (within the fuel tank, in the boot) after 100k miles. A wire connected melted on mine and Mercedes will try to sell you a new fuel tank and fuel pump but you just need to replace the connector for £1... Also, brake discs cost £750 each but last a very long time. This is one of the cheapest smile-per-miles cars ever made. If only the gearbox was a bit quicker, it would have been taken more seriously. They're a rare car and they will appreciate in time.

Mine had a wire break. The earth to the number plate light... Its like an 8 strand in a loom that will flex every boot opening WTF.. a 30+ strand is the standard, anyhoo, swoped it out, sigh, all good now. Devalue the experience of ownership - heck NO. Minor stuff...

Nice video. I know the later version, R172, looks don't always appeal compared to the one you have but the 172 is an evolution of the species. The V8 becomes a V4 on light throttle cruise conditions without loosing the soundtrack - and is capable of 40mpg! Slightly heavier, longer and wider than the 171 and more of a GT car - I love it and being the last naturally aspirated sports V8, I'm watching it start to appreciate.

This looks great! And the engine is a sure bonus. But how's the handling? I've owned BMW's for most of my life and just once tried a CLK, and found it very disspoiting due to the understeering character. Is this a good handling car or, true to MB beliefs, still understeering coz it's so much safer?

I bought a new 2009 SLK 350 in Canada. With the v6 and 305 hp. And that was already a blast to drive. 0 to 100 km in 5.4 seconds. The AMG was 18000$ more and the only one that was available was a purple one with grey leather. That was not my choice ha ha So my lesser choice was an irridium silver with a black leather interior/black ashwood combination. I loved every km in this car.

I'm thinking about making a really stupid purchase and getting a stupid high mileage one of these for a second car. I have a pretty low mileage CLA 45 AMG for a daily, but have been wanting to grab a beater. There's 2 200k mile SLK 55 AMGs within 300 miles of me, ones real close, too. One of them is a 2 owner with no accidents, and the other one is a one owner car😂 I figure if they're reliable enough that someone would buy and maintain it for 200,000 miles, it's good enough for a fun beater. They have it listed at almost 8,000, but no one's gonna bite at that, I don't think. Hoping it'll sit for a couple more weeks and then I'll offer the Kelly blue book value which is like 4 to 5 grand. The other ones listed at like 9k and maybe worth 6k max, and thats ones definitely a longer trek but still on my radar.

Depends where and how you drive, I get 13 -15 mpg around London and about 24-26 using super u/l on the motorway in my stock 05 slk55- I run at 80-90 whenever possible. Since 2005 I've had an M5 with a 400bhp 4.9Litre V8, which I far far prefer most days - unfortunately for the SLK. The engine is a screamer and just as fast, but I can only get 9-14mpg round town and 22-23 on the M-Way in the M5. The SLK is a great pose on a sunny day or a balmy evening - loads of character, but I find mine uncomfortable and in need of an aftermarket exhaust like the one shown here.- my M5 has a similar X-pipe and decat and sounds absolutely awesome. V8 Rumble overlaid on a high reving Formula 1 scream. Actually I love them both - shame I can't now afford either of them.

Are those parking sensors on the rear bumper in the thumbnail? I didn't think that was a factory option. Mine certainly doesn't have them. If they're aftermarket, do you know what brand/seller? How does it indicate when something is close (sound or visual too)? Sorry, so many questions, as this has rocked my world. If you tell me the sensors are also on the front, I might faint...

@fullyplantd

I would go with it with confidence. It's a simple car, not much can go wrong and as it was a mass produced body most parts are cheap to source. I've seen some advertised with 140k miles on the clock. I would 100% get the subframe checked, they are known for corrosion and it's a £3k - £4k job to replace. It's total luck on whether your car is effected.
@Marc-uw4lw
@Marc-uw4lw 2 жыл бұрын
Mine has done about 140k. I've done about 60k of that and half of them weren't slow :) It's built to typical german standards so your only issues should be wear and tear parts. I'm not concerned with keeping low mileage. I like to drive it, so it'll probably get to 500k easily if I never sell it.

I professionally remapped my 2008 200Slk Kompressor from 184 CV to 214 CV, not to mention the torque increase. The car has full options. It is designed for 95 Octane, but I use 98. Oil and filter change every year or 6000 Km, which ever comes first. Looks the business with many upgrades to AMG standard. Cheaper insurance and fuel economy, and I have my own trusted engineer instead of paying Mercedes silly service costs. 🤔😁

The reason for good fuel economy is that this car has the clever cylinder deactivation. It runs on 4 cylinders around town when cruising. When you push the peddle, all 8 cylinders will fire up for maximum power.

I think that came in on the model after this one, the r172. This one doesn't have it.
@KingofInterns

Actually it is due to 7-speed auto. All other m113 cars have 5 speed which means higher rpm at any cruising speed on highway and therefore higher fuel consumption. I wish my c55 estate had 7 speed as I tend to use it as cross continent GT car. Cylinder deactivation did exist on the 5L m113 found in S500 but it didn't work all that well apparently.

It comes down to what you want out of the car: SLK55: Convertible A bit classier looking Better MPG I'd guess cheaper parts due to mass production Nicer interior Dated better Monaro: More practical Bigger cult following so more mods and clubs A bit more aggressive and lary More unique where as most will think the SLK55 is just another SLK Available in manual

I was an slk owner (200 192hp - 320 218hp both manual shift gear) but Z4 is pretty much a good alternative choice and honestly more intriguing as far as driving performance in most respects. The best value for money Z4 here in Italy is the 2500/3000 model however picking up a 35is twin turbo 3.0 would be my goal.

Just don’t mention terrible rusting arches and dangerously rotting subframes, which ALL slk’s suffer from. No matter the power plant or spec. If you have one, get that sub frame inspected by Mercedes. It’s free, and if rotten Mercedes will replace it for free if rotting from the inside.
