Hope you are ready for some windmills, green fields and beautiful places!
In the beginning of June, we started our journey into the Standing Mast Route, a part of the European waterways that run through the Netherlands. The route is defined in a way where all bridges and locks can be passed with the mast up. We start in terrible weather, but summer arrives and we get to sail along the beauty that is Holland in the warming sun. Looking back at the video clips, we get goose bumps over how pretty everything is 😁 Sailing in such narrow canals, is something we have never done before and it was truly a great experience.
For navigation we used the Staande mastroute Wateratlas, the Waterkaart Live app and our Navionics charts. We did not carry the wateralmanaks, which are the most common books (since you are obliged to carry the waterway rules onboard). The rules are instead found in the app mentioned above, which we used instead. Still, everything is in Dutch so it's a bit tricky to understand.
We are Emmy and Marcus, a Swedish couple who has decided to leave our home and set sail. For now the goal is Caribbean, but who really knows how far your dreams might take you?
Welcome aboard our sailboat Linnea!

I just found your site, when looking to learn about the StaandMast route. I want and I am planning to visit colleagues in Alkmaar - well why not all the way from UK with our yacht!!!. This is very helpful. And wow, what a great yacht. We almost never hear of it in the UK, but Linjett gets fantastic reviews. Like golddust, I think. Its good to know that with 2m draft, you can get through even the shallow canals on the route.

Hi there! Linnea is a Linjett 40 😊 She is a 40 foot, Swedish built beauty! If you want to have a closer look, I would recommend watching this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oNOBZZCVtZOln6c.html 🤩

are there special licenses needed to sail in/around Netherlands? I'm planning on sailing there from USA

No, als long as your boat is under 15 meters (51ft I think) with a top speed slower than 20km/h (12 knots ish?) you're fine. Otherwise you need 'KVB1' (boating license) You do need a VHF license if you wish to use one. That's called a 'marifoon' in dutch. I do recommend getting your boating license sooner than later if you wish to sail here for a long period of time, since it can get quite busy on the waters here.

I would recommend getting a licence for the European inland waterways. It’s debatable weather or not it’s required for the Dutch canals, but it’s still great knowledge if you plan to go the canals and we figured better safe than sorry on that one!

An ICC (international certificate of competence) is accepted in the Netherlands. For VHF you have to comply to the regulations in your home port.
