Hypokalemia is a low level of potassium (K+) in the blood serum.[1] Mild low potassium does not typically cause symptoms.[3] Symptoms may include feeling tired, leg cramps, weakness, and constipation. Low potassium also increases the risk of an abnormal heart rhythm, which is often too slow and can cause cardiac arrest.[1][3]
Mild hypokalemia is often without symptoms, although it may cause elevation of blood pressure,[6] and can provoke the development of an abnormal heart rhythm. Severe hypokalemia, with serum potassium concentrations of 2.5-3 meq/L (Nl: 3.5-5.0 meq/L), may cause muscle weakness, myalgia, tremor, and muscle cramps (owing to disturbed function of skeletal muscle), and constipation (from disturbed function of smooth muscle). With more severe hypokalemia, flaccid paralysis and hyporeflexia may result. Reports exist of rhabdomyolysis occurring with profound hypokalemia with serum potassium levels less than 2 meq/L.[7] Respiratory depression from severe impairment of skeletal muscle function is found in some people.[

Add to the list- Entire digestive system shutting down. Mine stayed low for months. I kept having nausea. Every doctor I went to said its just my morning sickness and I just need to wait it out. I in my 8th pregnancy. I knew what nausea from morning sickness was and when it was something different. But they wouldn't listen to me. Went on for months kept getting worse and my digestive system starting shutting down. I could only eat 3 bites of food at a time then weight 8 hours before I could try to fit another 3 bites. I lost tons of weight and lots of muscle from starving. Finally I went to the ER for some other non related reason and they did blood work on me and my potassium was 2.8. Finally a doctor that believed me that it wasn't just morning sickness, gave me a proper diagnosis and prescribed me potassium pills. I now can eat normal again and use the bathroom. I'm also not falling asleep throughout the day and can finally concentrate

Hi do you have any permanent damage from your low levels? Although my potassium is now stable,I suffer from bloating, constipation and struggle with eating as I have no appetite and feel full. Also my heart feels 'fatigued' and overworked but normal ecg.Ive noticed I'm not as sharp mentally as I once was and feel a little disorientated at times. A 10 year battle to get answers then Conns Disease, which is truly awful.

My entire last 10 years has been made up of stripping things away until I was down to strict carnivore and then adding things back to solve little problems. I've added bananas and potatoes to help keep me off of the blood pressure mess. Not only do our elders fail to educate us, they program children to ve okay with way too much sugar from very early on. Candy is for children, but the Chritmas, Halloween and Easter levels of candy are child abuse. Sparingly was spoken a couple of times, but that was clearly never the plan.

@Alchemi-Azazel……Because doctors have to dance to the tune of insurance companies and big pharma…..or it’s by-by license. So they are required to prescribe you some worthless, harmful drug, that in turn will cause other side effects….that in turn will cause other conditions, for which you will need more drugs for…..and so on. Now, you will be on the big pharma drug wheel till you die…..or……until you educate yourself on alternatives that are safer and better.

There are many other reasons as to why you could have all of those symptoms. While I've had low potassium before, I have these symptoms on a daily basis due to a janky autonomic nervous system or dysfunctional one. So don't go and try to diagnose yourself, it's just best to get yourself to the doctor and have labs done.

Yes , I can relate to that. I went to my GP with a potassium of 3.3 he refused to treat it so it dropped further despite eating potassium rich foods.6 weeks later I was in a/e with fast heart rhythm felt dreadful overall my potassium was now 2.7 !Heart in dangerous rhythm on monitors. Had to stay in overnight for 2 bags of potassium chloride to be administered very slowly. Heart has never been the same since ! Diagnosis of Conns Disease 1 month later by a gastroenterologist treating me for bloating, completely accidentally on a hunch he had when I told him my potassium story! Straight away referred on to endocrinology! Endo said highest aldosterone result he'd ever seen ! Suffering dreadfully from complications of this awful disease. Good luck to those newly diagnosed, hope your GP is on the ball with this!

Use potassium citrate (with food and sea salt) and potassium bicarbonate (away from food / empty stomach and with sodium bicarbonate / baking soda). You can do small amounts of potassium chloride along with sodium chloride or Himalayan or Celtic salt straight on your tongue deep, followed by drinking water. It's hard to swallow on water, but dry chased by water it's much easier. Just don't do too much. Maybe aim for daily... 2 grams sodium, 4 grams potassium or 3 grams sodium, 6 grams potassium If you sweat a lot increase your sodium higher.

Wow, my doctor didn’t mention any of this. I was hospitalized with pneumonia back in February. My potassium was below 3.0, should be between, I believe 3-7 or 3.5 - 7.5. At one point it dipped to 1.7 😳. They said they were having a really bad time getting where it should be. I was getting it through IV, which hurts like hell, and I had to drink it. It tastes like the saltiest seawater you’ve ever had the displeasure of tasting. A year before I was in the ER for something else and it was really low then too. Now, 4 months after being in the hospital this last time it’s low again. They never told me a thing about this list of symptoms, I experience most all that! I actually have an appointment today for blood work to have it checked. I swear, this is bananas!

Check for Bartters Syndrome. A very rare kidney disease. I am 89 and have had it since age 10. My brother passed from it when he was only 26. Years before anyone did electrolytes. My normal potassium levels are 2.5...1.9. Did drop once to 1.0. I become paralyzed at these levels. I have Classic Bartters/ Gitellmans. Have very low levels of magnesium as well. This is a familial disease.....Runs in families. The problem begins because our kidneys will not absorb sodium. The body trying to stay in chemical balance, dumps potassium, magnesium, calcium, and chloride.

Just buy a coconut. Drink the water and eat the white coconut meat. Potassium is found in both. Thats about 1400 mg of potassium right there. Use the whole coconut and a banana or 2 in a smoothie in the morning with some strawberries. avocado at lunch time. And make your own diy electrolyte drink with sea salt, lime/lemon, acv and cream of tarter and that should fix your potassium levels right up.

Thank you very much. Now which food has more potassium than bananas, not very keen on bananas, and my doc advised to eat bananas. Are there potassium tablets, will check at the chemists tomorrow, and what kind of potassium do we take? God bless you, because I have all the symptoms, well I was told my potassium level is very low, but there was no prescription, except “eating bananas. I will google also to see other veggies and fruits that have potassium. Thanks 😊

You need roughly 4700 mg of potassium a day more than 98% of all Americans are not getting enough potassium in their diets this is causing a lot of problems with the kidneys. Because your body is actually pulling nutrients out of your bones because you don't have enough potassium. I had severe gut problems for the last 3 or 4 years. In the last week I've taken 4000 mg of potassium a day and I'm sweating normally I'm peeing normally and my poop is coming out normally I no longer have any of the health issues I once had simply from taking four thousand milligrams of potassium per day. If I would have known this when I was a teenager I wouldn't have the issues I have today. For instance because I wasn't getting enough potassium I have calcium deposits that built up on my feet when my body was pulling calcium out of the bones in my feet and left some and a Critic bumps and these bumps when I walk cause nerve damage in my feet which cause inflammation in my calf muscle so the issues I have almost completely gone I just have to get rid of the calcium deposits that built up in my feet and I'll literally be able to run 10 miles again. I someone who is very athletic seeing that it was just a potassium deficiency and that I can get my life back in order blows me away
