@12:41 - A tip for getting a lot of colour from your pans: use an eye dropper and drop 1-2 drops of water about 2-3 mins before dipping your brush into the pan, it softens up the paint to an almost buttery consistency. Sometimes I need to be careful doing this because almost too much pigment gets loaded on my brush if its professional grade watercolour paint like Daniel Smith which are already buttery to begin with. However for my student grade watercolour paint such as my Sakura Koi watercolours, it helps get the right amount of paint loaded onto my brush as it's harder in consistency due to the binders used.

A cool tip I picked up from a fellow watercolor artist: using a rubber/silicone-tipped color shaper tool for masking fluid is super helpful! They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and the masking fluid can be wiped clean or peeled right off! No need for designating an old brush and having the bristles clump on you.

Quick tip for those who _really_ want a glossy finish but don't think the AquaGloss is for them: Try India inks! They're a lot like watercolours, except they dry waterproof (makes glazing a lot easier, imo) and naturally dry shiny, even with thin coats. Anyway, lovely video as always! Thanks so much for all the time and effort you put into these videos ❤

for the masking fluid: dip your brush in soapy water before dipping it onto the masking fluid. i'd suggest putting some masking fluid on a separate container, the soapy water will also help thin the masking fluid which makes it easier to spread

try wetting your brush slightly and swirl on a bar of soap. Might be a personal preference but I like the way the bar soap coats the bristles and holds less water

Hun, please get a laser printer jc, I can't picture myself drawing the same lineart over and over without my tendinitis making my hand fall off lmao. Theres so many things i didn't even knew existed here!!! Though probably the only thing i would end up using regularly is the masking fluid bc my painting style is really flat and sharp and I am not a fan of texture and glitter getting everywhere, however im adding at least half of these to my wishlist even if just to play around with them in the future. I am also interested in the granulating spray, more than granulation it looks like a quick way to paint leaves and foliage in the background so im really curious abt that too.

I subbed this channel 5 years on my OG account from 2007. YT decided to ban myself, as well as countless of other OG accounts, for no deserving reasons. I've forgotten about it until recently when looking for makeup inspirations (I'm a newb and couldn't makeup my face out of a misty parchment paper bag), and I remembered this fabulous watercolour portrait artist. I spent hours going through them all and FINALLY found THE ONE....Laovaan!!!! I used to be a portrait graphite artist and mucked around with expressionism paintings waaaay back in high school. I've spent this eve going through his vids that would inspire me for what I want my makeup for the rest of tomorrows to be. Also... HUGE also!!!! I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the music trax on each vids! Especially the more melancholic ones. As a former pianist, I just ADORE the instrument the most. (synth/kb too). I only wish that Laovaan would post more often. Regards... 💕

Nice comparisons here Laovaan! The composition is very charming as well. My curiosity was piqued by your concerns about the Aqua Gloss, so I looked it up and found this information which was very helpful to me: "This medium (Schmincke Aqua Gloss) increases the gloss and brilliance of watercolor. It can be applied over dried watercolor or mixed with color prior to painting. The gloss effect decreases when diluted with water. Aqua Gloss retards drying time and remains water soluble." Thanks for a great review ♥

Hmm, masking fluid... Using a dip pen for small details will also do instead of brush for masking fluid. It takes a while to learn how to properly make masking fluid work and flow easily with dip pens - but it's worth the time. Not to mention that it's extremely easy to clean up with dip pens when compared to brushes; just wash it with hot water or wait for masking fluid to dry before picking it up/ or just wipe it with paper tissue, then wash it with a bit or warm water, and wipe again. Once the masking fluid dries up, you can also use the dip pen (thin ones, preferably) to fix the mistakes and slightly correct them by scrubbing the excess masking fluid for some details with the dip pen. Or fix the shape of the area you masked. Dry masking fluid won't attach itself to the paper again, but will instead stick with other masking fluids it's connected to - so once you remove those small parts, you don't have to worry about it protecting your paper surface again when you paint over it. There's also tools for applying masking fluids, but I never tried then, so I can't give my opinion regarding this things. In my personal experience, if there are spots you want to be white on the watercolor illustration - I recommend trying to achieve this effect with masking fluid rather than white ink, since it's more explosive and noticeable when you have an unpainted white surface (for example: gloss in eyes, nose or lips), than when you paint over it. It might also be easier to first cover those spots with masking fluid, then use countless layers of watercolor for skin without having to worry about accidentally painting over these surfaces.

From what i've seen other artists do, AQUA gloss or any other solution of gum arabic can be added directly into water to increase the drying time of your watercolors, which can be very useful if you're painting wet in wet on cellulose paper, as cellulose tends to dry faster than cotton.

Working with acrylics, I use some if these media. Rubbing fluid doesn't take that long tp dry, but I don't like the harsh lines, it creates. Shimmer fluid is an allrounder for me, but doesn't work on it's own. I tend to use metallic foil instead, which is way more shiny. But trying to paint over it, is a great idea! Wouldn't it be better to use a varnish instead of the aquafluid? Using a semi-matte one gives you the opportunity to build up the shine ... The paste ar the end is great, especially the granulated one. But it adds weight to the paper - the paper should handle that. Btw. You could apply the rubbing fluid with an needle or the back of a brush. Or a spatula.

I appreciate the reproduced drawings to ensure an objective comparison. It's what I would do. What about DIY alternatives? They're usually more affordable. For example, instead of mixing metallic powder with just water or other products, try mixing it with DIY watercolor binder - gum arabic & glycerin (honey & clove oil aren't necessary). Gum arabic is a binder that adds shine and can repel other colors if you have enough (whether combined with watercolors or added on top). Gum arabic can also help in small amounts if your watercolors crack in the pans since repeatedly adding water can cause the binder to sink. Glycerin softens it so it can be reactivated by water. Clove oil is only needed as a preservative if you use honey, and then it has to be refrigerated to keep it from molding, but I haven't found anything saying that honey is actually needed. Mixing in the right proportions does take practice. What about adding watercolors with sea salt (which draw the colors toward it) or is that bad for the paper/longevity of the painting? Couldn't you add watercolor (or pick up watercolors already on the paper) to the shiny colors to make it less flat? Could you reproduce a painting and add the shiny colors to printed copies or would it have to be on watercolor paper to keep it from warping? For masking fluid, try silicone brushes (which clean easily) or something with a harder tip. Normal brushes have too much give for the type of fluid, which might be why you're struggling. Do you have any other tips for keeping it from tearing paper? Is the lift off medium the same as permanent masking fluid (which I haven't had much luck with)? I've only recently started researching all this since I've discovered gouache and jelly gouache, which people do not talk about enough! Most of these can add to paintings (and even still be clean), but they make learning to paint harder, so they're more for when you've mastered watercolors and you're bored of the same old stuff. I really like the one with the leaves in the background and I think it could add a layer of interest. People rarely know how to use something to their advantage the first time they try it, so I say keep at it. Happy painting.

For a second I wondered if they mixed into the gold and silver powder some gum arabicum and it seems they didn't. It might be a good idea to add some gum arabicum so it might rub off less. For fine detailed lines with masking fluid I recommend an application bottle. And so you don't have to sacrifice a brush, the silicon color shaper / rubber modelling clay shaper are a good alternative and last but no least in the tools collection for masking fluids is the architect ink pen with an adjustable screw for the width of the line.

In contrast from the more commonly used supplies like the masking fluid and even the ox gall fluid, I'd say the most superfluous material to use would be the gloss medium. If I was going to use a wax or a fixitive over the top of a piece to preserve the painting, I can imagine the gloss would diminish or go away entirely. I've seen pastes before and I dunno if the paste you used was also the type where people intentionally use a thick application to achieve cracks, but it does look fun to use in contrast to how watercolor is typically used. The shine and metallic mediums are also neat add ons to a piece to give a work some pizazz.
