As we had some questions on the function of the protection circuits I decided to make a deep dive session to proof the function. This video might to be too specific and may be therefore not interesting for all of you..

Thank you! Especially for your excellent explanation of error amplifiers. I imagine that regulators in series regulated supplies error amplifiers. Being that you work with voltages down to .0001, precise components are a must at this sensitivity! Great job!🙌

Hi , you have made a great job by explaining how works SMPS theoretically and practically . Can you make a complement video ? by simulating what can happen with the SMPS when for example according to your schematic: 1- UC3842 is not getting power supply 2- the transistor in the primary side get short circuit 3-the optocouplor is dead 4-one or some transistor in the secondary side get short circuit 5- rectifers diode in in the secondary side get short circuit.............ect the idea for every case will be to show in the oscilloscope or voltmeter what you are getting in the test point of the schematic. thank

Thanks for the video. I think both pin 2 and 3 can shutdown the oscillation. pin 3 will shutdown the oscillation when somehow the photo coupler fails, i.e. the LED in the photo coupler is dead, the controler thinks that there is no enough voltage on the output, so continues to pump the output. In this case, pin 3 will reach 1v and shutdown the oscillation. Also, it would be interesting to hook up a scope to see how all 4 voltages change simultaneously.

Yes, a SMPS is a "vast improvement" over those pesky linear supplies :O) Ok. Just having fun. I'll show myself out! (p.s. Thank you for the the GR8T content! The check is in the mail)

Ausgezeichnet! Very interesting follow up to your previous explanation of SMPS's and the protection circuit. Thank you. The only question I have is the ability of your DMM to accurately measure AC at such a high frequency. Is the Agilent rated at 60Khz or higher? Most DMM's are rated for AC at fequencies less than 1Khz and sinusoidal not pulsed. Having said that I believe that if the readings are incorrect they are high rather than low as the meter tries to average out the more complex waveform. So in this case I think your point is still proved they do not read above 1 volt.

Superb video, Peter! With names like Henrich, and Gorzny, in my family, I love the Germans, their practicality, and their accent. I've lost track of how many Germans named "Peter" I have worked for. Hans was a pretty good old fellow too. I worked for some Czechs a few times too, and some of them actually did make me want to attack them. They loved taking dangerously stupid shortcuts. Engl Amps puts dozens of mistakes in their schematics. Half the parts don't even have the values shown! They have vias to nowhere. They are just terrible, and it's a German company. I can still fix them, but........ I am better off not looking at their schematics and just working from purely a theory of operation basis, and what I have in the box in front of me at the time. 73s

What could be the reason of power fluctuations? Power fluctuates from 2volt to 12 volt.

well done . nice explanation but i have a question the ic shuted down due to the over voltage of 5 v output is this true because the load will decrease the 12 v output and so the tl431 will conduct due to the rising of 5v output as increasing the duty cycle to compensate the heave load ,is it true?
