** About the Migliarese Brothers **
Phil and Ricardo Migliarese began their journey over 30 years ago when jiu-jitsu had not even established itself in North America.
Under the guidance of Relson Gracie and the inspiration of Helio Gracie, the creator of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, the Migliarese brothers became two of first certified black belts in the United States.
Today, almost 20 years after they opened Balance Studios in Philadelphia, they have created a community, a family, of diverse individuals who are dedicated to learning from one another, on the mat and off.
Their techniques will give viewers a unique perspective into the service-oriented experience that the Migliarese brothers have created, and how it touches the lives of people in Philadelphia and at more than 40 global affiliates.

The difference betwen this sistem of jiu-jitsu for real fighting and the tournament competition jiu-jitsu is HUGE. God bless Grand Master Helio Gracie for sharing his techniques with the world, and let´s be thankfull for the instructors that are still teaching this perfect sistem!!!

The Jiu-Jitsu that Grand Master Helio Gracie created was intended for self defense; that is real fighting with no rules, no time limits and no weight classes. It´s the sistem that gives the little guy a chance of surviving against (and eventually defeating) a bigger, stronger oponent, and that is why it emphasyses defense over ofense, because that´s what you should do against someone a lot bigger than you.

very good video folks. crisp technique, from what i've read, Helio was upset that the art had gone more known in the way of sports (like Judo) than for self defense. most schools i've seen have maybe a handful of SD techs, and the rest is for competition. defending yourself is much diff psychologically, physically than stepping into a ring. thumbs up dudes
@Brady2k10

that said, i have to admit judo is more appealing to me, because of the transitions, to get a bigger/heavier opponent down you gotta use their balance and then apply a technique and when they hit the ground hard you quickly get them into a choke/strangle or an armbar/leg lock whatever so on the street imo judo is superior for this reason, i mean have you ever been thrown by a judoka and landed on conrete? that alone fucks you up for about 10 seconds, long enough for a judoka to apply a choke etc

1. Two hand choke from front -- Weave and punch 2. ... Escape / knee strike 3. ... Enter / Koshi Guruma 4. ... break wrist tension and using brace leg against body 5. ...trap arms, O Goshi 6. Standing side headlock defense -- stop arm, posture up, go around behind for arm lock 7. ... te guruma... juji gatame (arm bar) 8. ...yoko guruma... juji gatame 9. ... tani otoshi, juji gatame 10. Standing choke from behind -- seio nage 11. ... kotegaeshi 12. ... sukui nage 13. ... single leg pickup from behind

14. Standing guillotine -- kouchi gake makikomi 15. ... sumi gaeshi 16. Bear hug from front -- o goshi 17. ... knee strike (hiza geri) 18. Seems like an attack not a defense? O goshi entering from grabbing the arm 19. Counters one of the defenses, which is arguably a defense -- counters an otoshi with a mount 20. Defense against front kick (mae geri) -- Kokyu nage (lift leg up and drop opponent) 21. ... elbow strike 22. ... catch kick, reaping (sickle) throw 23. An attack not a defense -- from boxing range, fake front kick, clinch, te guruma throw, mount, americana 24. ... but more of a two-hand reap ("blast double"/morote gari) they turn, goes for rear naked choke 25. ... fake kick, clinch, tani otoshi, arm bar

no- these techniques werent peculiar to gracie jiu jitsu- they were just the techniques that seemed to work against larger, stronger opponents honestly- i dont know why people seem to think Aikido doesnt work either- basically all trained in the same manner just different techniques.... i know for a fact they both work in the right circumstances... for a fact- i dont care what anyone says... i have experienced both scenarios... truthfully

@jaraman9
@jaraman9 12 жыл бұрын
@denverstapleton there is a lot of overlap in techniques of brazilian/gracie jiu jitsu, judo, aikido and japanese jujutsu I have practiced in all of them and stuck with gracie jiujitsu, but I think what it comes down to is the way the techniques are practiced, the philosophy and the particular gym you practice at. aikido techniques definately works- as in the techniques hurt, but I prefer the way gracie/bjj is being practiced at my particular gym, full speed but lot of emphasis on self defense

@JJ2006Ice If you read my message. I wrote as far as I understand it. I don't claim to be an expert. However, Maeda taught Judo this is very well doucumented. In fact, Carlos Gracie originally called Grace Jiu Jitsu 'Brazilian Judo'. I was told that directly from Carlos Machado at the IMB Academy and read it in interviews. If I'm wrong so be it. As for Kung Fu's role it also very well documented that they were practising grappling long before Jujitsu was even a thought, so were the greeks.

@Tarc5150 At the time judo and JJ were synonymous so I'm not surprised. However, Maeda joined the Kodokan with a background in newaza (which was then not part of the Kodokan syllabus). Furthermore, he wasn't a traditionalist and added whatever techniques he acquired. But regarding kung-fu and grappling - ALL martial arts have some form of grappling, that doesn't mean they're related. Kung-fu just likes to take credit for all other martial arts because it can't compete.
