We sail to 80°N; literally off the chart. We also visit the most northern settlement of Ny-Alesund and a glacial fjord.

Wow 80+ degrees latitude! A sailors bucket list tick mark for sure. Crazy how that active coal mining town tried to gouge you for dock fees when you probably might have spent the same amount or much more for your on shore adventure. Their loss and your gain. Thanks for sharing another great Sam Holmes Sailing update.

Within 700 miles of the pole, 15 miles a day walking would get you there in less than a couple months. Perhaps we will see Sam one day on the pole! Kite sledding is done on the south pole, never heard of anyone trying it to the north, perhaps the route is too bumpy with crunched sea ice... Great adventure!!! Thanks again!!!!

Just incredible. What a journey. You have no idea what flat earth channels wonder about the far north. It’s a mission critical query into the movement/rotation of magnetic north carrying-on to the next 26,000 cycle. Very interesting visit. Even if nesting bird was right pissed off you were near the nest apparently. A straight jacket. What a human interest comment. I have a question and thought you or one of the helpful people in the comment section might be able to answer this: How would I measure my SOG (speed over ground) without electronics on a turn? I find no explanaintion on it online but thought there had to be a way. You'd have to know how much progress you were making on the ocean no matter if you had power, no? Or do you just triangulate your position using stars and have reference points this way?

@@benkantor2668 That's kinda what I figured. Probably not a lot of practical need for most GPS units to chart up at those latitudes. That's pretty far north. I actually wouldn't mind knowing if it's the same case for southern latitudes, because I think there's a few pieces of Antarctica jutting out into the 80°s latitude....like maybe if you're sailing to McMurdo.
