Scapegoats for a failed immigration policy ......a disgrace

Quite a few years ago; a friend's house was the target of a burglar. This individual climbed on to an adjoining garage roof trying to gain access through an upper window. The roof was clearly labelled as "Fragile Roof - Safety Boards to be used" The burglar fell through the roof and landed atop a classic Mk9 Jaguar within, breaking the car's sliding roof and doing £4,000 worth of damage to the car. My friend was prosecuted for having an unsafe structure and taken to court. He was fined £1,000 plus costs! The last straw was when he was ordered to pay over £500 in damages to the burglar! I advised him to appeal the whole thing and prosecuted the appeal on his behalf. We won in the higher court and had the whole thing thrown out; so at least there was a happy ending. This haulier should appeal in my opinion; he has been the victim of a crime rather than a perpetrator. It seems that the country has gone mad. Particularly when it involves protecting these Invaders! All of whom should be treated as hostile and dealt with accordingly.

I am thinking the same as you Geoff. The border force needs to be fined 2.700.000 yesterday for bringing in 450 illegals. I wouldn't want to be using curtainsiders. This becomes a loading problem but I would be reluctant to use them.

Disgusting. A lorry driver knew that immigrants had broken into the back of the trailer. He told Frenchie police but they refused to do anything. So, he drove up to the tunnel entrance, swung it sideways, got out, locked it up and told them he ain't moving until they got em out. We should take the government to court for failing to stop these illegal immigrants. Is there a reason why we, the people could not do this.

My blood ran cold watching this. In 2020 I bought a house in central France where I now live. I hired a van from a major Uk company to transport belongings to my house. On the way home it was completely empty. I was aware of the migrant stowaway problem. On my previous trip to view my house I had seen about 50 young immigrants standing on roundabouts near the port, waiting for trucks to slow down and stop them so they could climb underneath or climb in. No French police in sight. So I decided to use the tunnel for my return. I stopped for fuel 20k from the tunnel. Checked that my vehicle was locked physically when I went in to pay and buy a sandwich. I checked the rear doors before continuing. Arrived at the Tunnel. French Border police with dogs walked around the van and then waved me on to the UK Border force patrol. A single officer approached and asked me what I had in the van. Absolutely nothing I said….its completely empty. Opened the doors….and there were 5 immigrants.😮 All laughing and smiling. I was cuffed and arrested immediately as another 5 Border force officers arrived. I was in complete shock. I couldn’t believe it. To keep the story short….I was arrested for 8 hours….I explained my situation. I was in France for three days moving house. I had solicitors documents and complete records of my travel. I think that a couple of the officers were sympathetic and could tell I was innocent. But one, unbelievably, an inspector whose command of the English language was appalling , was a complete ass #*#@. Constantly telling me that I was going to jail. I just stuck to the truth. I would not admit to the possibility that I might have inadvertently left the doors unlocked ( I didn’t know that there is actually a huge fine m just for this!) . After 8 hours, one of the nice guys told me that they were not going to charge me and started to give me my things back. The A hole arrived and said not so fast…I’m handing you over to the French police and you will be before a French magistrate in the morning…😮 I couldn’t believe it. After two more hours with the French police who were really kind, they released me and told me (in better English than half the border force spoke,) that the stowaway’s had admitted that a criminal gang had used a device to open the central locking on a computer so that they could get in , and then lock it again. I later found out that it only cost them 2000 euros for the software. So I was actually just grateful that they told the truth. It sounds dramatic, but it was a nightmare. How can you prove your innocence? The quality of the border force staff, is way below that of police officers. Of course my family and friends thought it was hilarious…..but as you can hear in this video…..the potential consequences were enormous. I really feel for the UK truckers who have to face this on a daily basis. The Uk economy is reliant on them. As I said to the border force. There is only one victim of crime here…..and that is me! I was a victim of criminal activity, but treated as the criminal.

They want to close down all successful small businesses & this is just another way of doing it.

"Taken every reasonable precaution...." There is NO WAY that a Court could prove you hadn't taken such 'reasonable precautions'. This is all about interpretation - the hauliers need to challenge this verdict as, should it be taken to a PUBLIC hearing in front of a JURY there is no way the verdict would stand.

It’s not worth doing business in the UK nowadays. We are run by clowns that have no idea of how stuff works. Yep. heard about this 2 weeks ago when the owner put a shout out on our trucking site on farce book, when I was coming back to the UK the little fkrs would wait till you stopped at lights, traffic ques and even at the dock gates to try and get into your trailer so a few of us would run nose to tail to try and stop them, I was lucky and never found one in my trailer but know of others who did.. I stopped donating to RNLI as soon as I found out what they were doing and again it seems 1 rule for them and 1 for us mere mortals. Stop donating to the enablers.

It is border force's job to catch the illegals, not the lorry driver - if he didn't pick them up willingly he (and the company) is not at fault - this is victim blame and shame..TIR/ international drivers need the protection at all stops and en route.. Even if the lorry driver drives up to the immigration post and declares illegals are stashed against his will ( and he wants them evicted ) and refuse to leave - the driver/operator will likely still be "infringed" upon by the "plods". Maybe the "whole trailer electrification" project isn't such a bad thing... (try for nonlethal)

I saw an interview with the guy on GB News. The driver went through the French screening scanner first which is optional and nothing was detected. The multiple offences were actually one previous incident. Isn’t it ironic that they send the Lifeboats out to bring them into the country. Ultimately this injustice with ridiculous fines because law enforcement agencies are ineffective.

I stored my old Bedford truck at EM Rodgers, they are just round the corner from my work. They charged me for car storage not truck storage and I was often parked next to million pound classics, and was treated no different. Genuinely nice chaps and happy to chat about old truck stuff when at local car shows. A shame they were chosen to be the dead cat thrown on the table to distract from the government's incompetence.

Maybe a topic for Blackbelt Barrister to talk about. I thought that a key part of proving a crime was criminal intent. If the company or driver had been caught taking bribes to take illegal migrants then you have a clear case to convict. Also health and safety law has a defence of so far as reasonably practicable. It sounds in this article the company and driver have exercised all due diligence. This makes the increased fines totally arbitrary and unfair.

The state/government are basically accusing all haulage firms of breaking the law, being people smugglers! As you say, the drivers are not security guards and to try to stop or eject illegal immigrants would be very dangerous, probably end up getting knifed! I did spot the report in The Mail, the other day & thought it stank. I liked (not really) how the Government tried to paint he haulier as the one being AT FAULT, when what happened to the Illegals? Why weren't they castigated and MADE to pay the FINES? Certainly the hauliers can't be people smuggling, but nor can they be responsible for stowaways who illegally enter their trailers & ILLEGALLY enter UK.. And what of the French just letting boat loads of illegals risk life & limb Xing the Channel? Just horrible.

Geoff this was bought up on sky news about illegals why not get in touch with them every morning they are on about the emigration and they seem to get enough attention of the government that’s happening in the country and pms are on there to answer there questions and also rip in to them as to why this is happening 😡😡 I am also a lorry driver this has happened to loads of my friends that are also in the industry this is why drivers are leaving and not wanting to do the job no more amongst other problems happening in the industry that i know of to not just this

Agreed. I been saying the same thing for years now. Why aren’t the RNLI being fined in the same way.? This smacks of double standards and is wrong on so many fronts.

There was a report in the press, not too long ago, where an illegal had climbed into an empty roof-box on a car, while the driver/owner was in the 'rest' room at a cafe, on the way back to the UK. - - - Curtain-sider trailers are easy to get into - via the curtain fasteners. The 'outside' person unclips a couple of latches, the 'mice' climb in, then the outsider relatches the fasteners. Who's to know unless there is cctv all over each vehicle, including inside each trailer - 24/7? And how many have climbed into the wheel-wells of aircraft at an airport that is supposedly totally secure? Some survive, most don't - they either freeze or suffocate.

Putting the injustice of this to the side, any fines the haulage companies receive will filter down to the companies who are paying for the haulage. Which in turn will filter down to the price of what the products which are being transported. So fining the companies who owns the lorries will just cause everyone to put their prices up.

this has been a big problem for years ,i used to transport race cars back and forth abroad and many times fellow truckies would find illegals in there trailers even though we would be hours away from the port and not stopping anywhere.i have had my truck tampered with but not entered ,just luck i guess. authorities always go for the easy target .i think your right saying its a P R stunt.

I used to be a night trunk lorry driver. About 12 years ago, I was parked up at Birch Services on the M62, when a continental curtain sider parked up a few bays from me.. After the driver had got out of his cab and gone into the cafeteria about 10 people jumped out of the trailer, and ran off in all directions. This company are being ripped off by the government.
