@@Dan23_7 Great sound, but too quiet - the 6R4's bark could be heard for miles at night, and a friend's dad rallied a 911 that was as loud coming towards you as other cars were going away, and as it went past you felt the engine's beat in your chest ... heady stuff in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere. That said, watching Rohrl leave the rest of the field for dead on the roads of Ulster was an eye-opener - and I'll admit the short Quattros sounded awsome!

You may think that, and you might be right, but both the Peugeot and Lancia were notably short wheelbase too... The Metro did have pretty awful reliability as I remember, even when compared to the rest of the Group B field. With you on the lack of a turbo though, which was supposed to have been remedied in an evolution which ended up being the blueprint for Will Gollops twin turbo 6R4... Wondering if the 4WD system itself was inferior to those employed by Audi, Peugeot, Lancia, and especially the clever system used in the Ford RS200. I do remember the transfer shaft to the centre diff being questioned at the time.

I can remember Gp B in Grizedale 1986 SS30 and SS31 as part of the Lombard RAC (last year after the Toivenen tragedy in Corsica) and it was utterly bonkers as they all knew that it would be the last time they got to take these things out. Clarkson once described the experience as being akin to sitting in a fridge with a small cup of cold soup while people threw wet gravel at you for hours - but we loved it anyway! However, does anyone else recall Will Gollop of rallycross fame getting one of these original V6 beasts, shoehorning in a V8 (presumably from a Rover SD) and changing the designation to FG8R4 after his dad Fred Gollop? It's possible that I have seriously mis-remembered this (or made it up completely), but I'm more than a little convinced that it isn't just old age catching up on me!
