I’m a southerner and I WISH we had earthquakes instead of tornadoes. Just rode out three of them, no lie, last night. And yes I have slept through them before. And just to let people know, when there is a tornado, here’s what you need. A flashlight, your keys, your wallet or purse, shoes if you’re not wearing any, a jacket, a spare water bottle, a helmet (for each of the kids), and any firearms you own.

My son was three, still using the little potty on the floor, and needed someone to go with him to the bathroom. We're both half asleep, but he starts talking about a frog. I'm like no that's a leaf we must have brought back home. Big brown, like the size of his hand. Then i get closer bc I'm blind and not wearing my glasses. It was a giant cockroach. I had to just grab a cup and put it over it. Then wake up my husband. We are a catch and release home, but some things do not get to live and i could not be the one to do it. It truly was the size of a frog.

We just had an F3 rip through a few mobile home parks in my area. Some of the parks that were hit had a requirement that the trailers have ground straps. Those strapped to the ground had some porch roofs and sheds missing. The people inside said they could feel the trailers trying to lift but ultimately the straps did their job. The parks that didn't have that rule: they look like war zones and there were casualties.

That's why it's good to keep your basement or shelter prepped ahead of time with water, food, flashlights, blankets, a weather radio, entertainment for kids (as sometimes it can last hours), keep the phones charged...etc. That way you don't have to scramble for everything last minute. And pay attention to the weather alerts and radar to see where it is. You won't be able to see it if it's at night or if it's rain-wrapped, so the radar helps. We also prep our porch and yard ahead of time so shit doesn't blow away, and ALWAYS anchor your trampoline! 😂

My mother used to suck them up the vacuum cleaner. That is how you deal with the gigantic Aussie spider females and male legs (mid 1960’s). One evening (Now BC, Canada, late 1970’s) she threw the telephone book at one and told me she had killed it. Na-aa. It was still alive 19 hours later! It had been stuck under the book all night and most of the next day trying to get up and crawl out. Yup…vacuum cleaner deployed. Strangely, I am the only person on my mother’s side of the family that is NOT an arachnophobe. And I can’t claim adoption or a hospital mix-up because my mother had me at home. Now as an adult, I pick them up, mostly in a glass trap, sometimes without and chuck them out the kitchen window. Usually this was late at night and we were on the second floor. I used to wonder what would happen if someone was down below…but then the thought occurred that if they were looking in someone’s window…they deserve to have a spider thrown down on them…

My son went to a really great college in NYC. But the dorm building he was in was ancient and rooms the size of someone’s regular sized walk in closet with a tiny bathroom you had to shift around to move within. Every night he said this huge cockroach would come out of the drain in his sink to visit. He named it. He doesn’t have the heart to harm anything, so it would just visit the sink and leave. NYC. There's roaches, waterbugs and palmetto bugs (Florida anyway). Waterbugs are like roaches but just like drains. Unsure of which one since it's NYC though.

Hawaii’s Cane Spiders. I had to get the thick dictionary to kill that sucker because it was chasing me ALL over the room. And yes, I tried raid and the thing LAUGHED at me. So out came my extra thick dictionary. It crunched. My husband was useless. Totally useless.

Same thing. Until I hear the sirens, no worries. Once was taking shelter, and heard the freight train. Louder and louder. My heart pounding as I'm mentally preparing. Then just silence. Was the weirdest feeling of relief and panic.

Oh my gosh, I was laughing so hard. I have lived, only by God's Grace, through many tornadoes. One was where we were on the road and the tornado was coming down the highway. My mom tells us kids we are going into the ditch in our station wagon. While we were in the station wagon we could see cars getting picked up and thrown! We had no way of knowing where they went. When it was over, the cars that were in the big ditches like we were, seemed to be okay. I was only 4 and that was my first tornado...I had no clue where those other cars that stayed on the road went. Just was glad my family was okay. I know now that most people who stay in cars and are picked up by tornadoes, the people do not usually survive. Heck, if a semi-tractor trailer, fully-loaded, can be taken up by a tornado, and lest we forget homes as well, then we had a miracle that day on the road!

You can run from a tornado (go the other direction) but an earthquake is everywhere.

You can go outside and be safe in an earthquake. Don't try that when a tornado is coming. As Ron White said. It's not THAT the wind is blowing. It's WHAT the wind is blowing. It doesn't matter how many push-ups you did that morning, if a Volvo hits you.....

Tennessee isn't exactly tornado alley. In North Texas, there's a tornado warning in my area at least a dozen times every year. Doesn't really even matter what time of year it is. You get to where you pretty much ignore them. Until....that siren goes off. That means it's basically right on top of you. Then you run to the downstairs bathroom, hop in the tub, and cover up. Even though that's probably not going to do much good. Just luck of the draw after that.

Within a couple of days of moving from Ca to Tx, I experienced my first tornado warning. I was staying in a 5th wheel at a friend's till I found a place. We had gone to dinner and had just gotten back when the tornado warning hit. Every 15 minutes, my friend will call me to let me know we were still under a tornado warning. Then she called me to tell me her worker had tried to leave but the tornado was in front of him and he had to turn around and come back. No cellar, no storm shelter, her house was not anchered. The next day, we found out that the road we had been traveling on had been torn up, and 12 houses on either side of the road had had their roofs ripped of.
