I have a 2010 F150 4.6 3V at 180k I replaced all timing components and installed a high volume oil pump. It has 250k now still running great. 5w30 in these engines are a must imo.

I have a 2009 F150 4.6l 3v with 356k miles on it. I bought it new and changed the oil with Mobil1 synthetic 5-20 every 6k miles. No major problems engine doesn’t leak or burn oil. Replaced the alternator and ball joints other than normal maintenance nothing else

I have a 2008 Mustang with the 3v. This is an extremely reliable engine, like Toyota level reliable, with one caveat, you have to do the recommended maintenance/oil changes. As long as you do that, there’s really no issue with timing/phasers or any other part of the engine.

Im a chevy guy. But bought a 06 xlt 4wd f150 4.6 2v that was banged up on right front and had a stolen salvage title to boot. 1300 bucks. A shit ton of miles also. So i knew it had been rawhided. I rebuilt suspension. Basically went thru a thorough tune up. Replaced entire ac system. Its been 3 yrs and commute 100 miles a day and drive with purpose myself. Ive been really impressed by that sucker. The smetric transmision is what ive been disappointed by. Its still a helluva spunky truck tho

My 2000 4.6 2V has 299,000 miles and still runs great. No timing chain rattle yet. Regular oil changes and routine fluid service. Automatic transmission still alive too.

I’ve been a professional technician for 30 years and I pretty much hate all brands these days but the 4.6 2 valve was a major leap forward for Ford’s small block technology. With proper maintenance they were fully capable of running great for hundreds of thousands of miles. I can’t speak for other states but back when our state’s Highway Patrol used Crown Victorias exclusively the idle hours alone were staggering. That’s not even taking in consideration the number of miles on them. They did it on regular bulk 5W20 too. After all that cab companies couldn’t wait to buy them at auction and then they would put in tons more miles in cab service. I’ve worked on my share of 5.4 Triton trucks and they were definitely more problematic but I have still seen a lot of them in fleets with 350-400K miles. I’m being honest. I prefer the more simplistic design of the LS platform but I can’t be critical of the 4.6 2-valve after seeing so many of them run great for hundreds of thousands of miles. Maybe I have been lucky but I’ve never had to fix a 4.6 2-valve for spitting a spark plug out. I’ve done 5.4 Tritons over the years though.

I currently own a 2003 Grand Marquis with the 4.6, best engine I've owned. It currently has 167k miles, just blown it's first plug last week, calvan kit saved it, not a hard job at all, took 30 mins. Only engine issues I've had was the common intake coolant leak (new intake needed) and a thermostat. I'm never selling this car

I have a 2005 Ford E150 cargo van with over 333,000 miles on it, I haven't had any trouble with the engine. I add a 1 quart of oil between oil changes. Oil gets changed 5,000. I do most all my own service work.

I guess I've been extremely lucky because I never had timing chain issues or oil pump failures in none of the six 4.6L and one 5.4L engines I've owned. I did have to replace 1 intake manifold.

I’ve got a 98 rcsb 4x4 with the 2valve 4.6l V8, truck has been flawless for over 14 years of ownership, just ball joints and regular maintenance stuff. A lot of ppl dog on these trucks, but the 4.6 2valve is an absolute work horse! I see them out on the roads all the time. Still putting in work. I personally love my truck, it’s has 385k on the clock, still runs great.

My daily is a 2010 F150 4.6L 2V. It only has 55,000 miles on it and I plan to keep it for a long time. This particular engine is one of the most reliable V8s ever made!

I’ve got a 2004 Grand Marquis. Love the 4.6L and I’m glad to have the 04 model, which is when Ford began fixing some of the more common problems like intake manifold cracks, etc. Approaching 127k miles and it runs like clockwork. I drive it a LOT, around 20,000 miles a year. I put Castrol Edge high-mileage 5W20 in there and just had the coolant and rear differential flushed. Here’s to another 100k miles!

All of my vehicles are 4.6L. I have a 1997 Expedition with 220k I have a 2008 Crown Vic p71 with 150k and a 1998 Mustang GT project. I trust the engines with my life. They last forever idle smooth and are easy to work on.

Love this video! Been trying to research these motors and the KZfaq algorithm has not disappointed. I have a question though and it might be irrelevant because I no longer have the truck. Back in 2013 I purchased a 1998 F150 super crew from my employer (it was a shop truck, immaculate interior and nice body). It had 167k on the motor. The one time the shop guy gave me a ride in it I asked him “Is your check engine light on?”. He said “nope”. I said “this truck has a miss. You need to have it checked.” He just shrugged his shoulders. Sure enough, one week later it was sitting way in the back of the shop. I asked him why he wasn’t driving it. He said there’s something wrong with the motor. (Go figure!) So I purchased it. I realized I didn’t have the time or space to do a motor swap so I paid a mechanic to do the swap. He said let’s look at it first in case it’s something simple. He called me a few days later and said the motor is toast. He has good news and bad news. Good news, it’s a good motor. I asked “If it’s a god motor why did it go bad?” He said “someone drove itit too long on a miss.” (I didn’t even tell him the story of the truck.) I asked him what’s the bad news. He said “typically a jasper reman is about $2,500 with core. Since this is a Raptor motor jasper wants $4,500.” He said another option is another motor from salvage. He found one with 80k miles on it. He drove down to the salvage yard to hear it run before he had them pull it. He puts it in the truck and I get it back. Drove it with no issues until it hit 235k miles (approximately 130/140k on motor). Then it did the same thing as the day I bought it. It ran awful, hardly wanted to idle, puffed, smoked, backfired. I really loved the truck. I just didn’t have the time to tear into it. But it’s bothered me to this day as to what was wrong with it. My nephew found some coolant in the oil but not bad. Still not good though lol. Now I’m wondering about cracked intake. Or stretched timing chain. I don’t have the truck anymore but based on this short story I wrote has anyone else had experience with this? The tenth generation f150 is absolutely my favorite one. We have a 2002 lariat super crew with 260k miles and it runs like a top. I also love these triton/modular motors too. I’m doing more research on them because I’d like to put a 4.6/5.4 motor in my old Fairlane with the 4r100 transmission. Just want something different under the hood that people wouldn’t expect. Everyone does the coyote swap and I’m not knocking it at all, I just want to be different. I’m fully aware that a modular will cost more than a Coyote to build up. Thanks for the info. I'm presently looking at a 2009 F-150 4×4 4.6 V8 Super Crew Cab. I like the truck it looks great with a decent lift kit and nice wheels. I was looking for a 5.0 Coyote but no luck finding one close to where I live. The 2009 has 185,500 miles on it. The transmission has a clunk going into third gear but the dealer is going to repair that. I hope I don't step into a money pit, these are great trucks as long as you take care of them and keep up with regular maintenance. Wish me 🤞luck !

Got a 4.6 2v in my 2001 Mustang GT, got a 4.6 3v in my 2010 Explorer Sport Trac Adrenalin, got a 4.6 3v in my 2010 Eddie Baurer Explorer. I must say the 4.6 has been super reliable. I have never been stranded, or had one issue with any of them. Regular maintenance, oil changes go a long ways. This engine does not make me miss my 5.0's from the 80-90s.

I had a 4.6 in a 95 Crown Vic. Single exhaust 190 hp car. Though I had to trade the car for the dreaded minivan, it was a good running motor car. I never had any engine problems. It would yield 28-33 mpg on the highway loaded down with family and luggage.

The 2v 4.6 was in Panthers until 2011, and also the E series had the 2v 4.6, 5.4 and I do not know for sure the 6.8 until I want to say 15 but I can't recall. (They also still had the 6.0 powerstroke until 2010 in the E series too.) The 4v was in the mark 8, aviator and marauder too. The explorer had an aluminum block 4.6 2v. There were also 2 different casted heads and cranks for the 4.6. Windsor had 8 bolt cranks and 13/14 bolt valve covers and Romeo had 11 bolt vc and 6 bolt cranks. The Terminator and Marauder had iron blocks, the Marauder didn't have forged internals like the termi so not quite a cobra motor, same as the harley davidson didnt have forged rods and pistons like the Lightening that most think is the same thing.) Just some tid bits for your knowledge

Hmmn, the 4.6 2v's in all of our Fleet vehicles are the most low maintenance trucks we have had. 11 are 4.6 F150s and 2 f150s are Junk 5.4 trucks. The 2 valves are very reliable...ie Police car engines. The 06 in the fleet is at 300k miles in and has only had normal maintenance.

I had a 96 tbird with the 4.6 and the dealer replaced the intake manifold under warranty . I had to replace both ignition coils . But no major repairs in seven years of ownership.

I had no major repairs on my 2005 Mountaineer until I reached the 200,000 miles mark.

So excited getting a 2008 E150 to convert into a camper van and it's good to know the engine is reliable except for the timing chain and spark plugs XD

I think 8020 Media nailed it with the importance of proper service. My 02 F150 I bought new and service it every 3500 miles or so, buy it only has 90,000 miles.

I have an 06 f150 4.6 I to had 1 spark plug blow out only because mechanic didn't torque right. 255875 on mine,1 battery alternator and that plug that's it. I would trust this truck to go anywhere. 5w 30 Full synthetic. Not a tick not a rattle runs perfect

I have a 2004 F150 STX with the 4.6 engine 2 valve, after replacing the spark plugs,one pop out,EZ fix,with 244000 miles on it,runs perfect,does not burn no oil and still have plenty of pep,everything orginal including the alternator,runs good and strong.

i have a 2006 GT Mustang....it has 220k miles on it ...i have had the spark plug issue....but i bought the removal kit and had no problem removing them with the kit.....it doesnt leak or burn oil....and it has way more power than it did when new

The only engine more bullet proof than a 2 valve 4.6 is a 4 valve 4.6. Especially the 4 valves in the 96-98 cobras. Tekskid casted aluminum block, 6 bolt mains, forged crank, rods and pistons.

I have a 1999 Ford f150 2wd 4.6 engine. I have been using E85 for a 1 year and 4 months and I am getting 33.4 miles per gallon. I usually put in 15 dollars of E85 and I can put on 252 miles. I have a hole in my exhaust manifold

Well, that was my original understanding, but may be incorrect. Anyway, I think the 2-valve motors are super solid, the cracking intake manifolds on earlier units not withstanding.

I have a 1995 Crown Victoria with the 4.6L and for some reason it sounds like there's a can of rocks in the engine whenever it's under load or above ~2500 rpm's. I've done everything from replacing the cats to rebuilding the trans to replacing the EGR and IAC valves. Other than this one minuscule problem it's been a great car and I don't really want to buy another car in this over-inflated market, hence why I put so much into mine. Knowing my luck it's about to chuck a rod but this noise has been present for years.

You missed a fifth problem with earlier 4.6 2 valve is with the spark plug leads fracturing and cause a miss fire mostly on the left bank.

I own a 05 Mustang GT , purchased it at 89,000 miles ! Owned it 5 years now have 130,000 on the clock so far I have replaced/maintained the intake manifold ,alternator , radiator including hoses ,the rear coolant piece (dont remember) , and clutch ; this isn’t including suspension but as of right now I have a misfire that comes and goes ;idle is rough ; I still believe that this motor is reliable and has imo common things serviced at the mileage I’m at ! I have taken the opportunity to upgrade and tune most things ! I’m happy with motor and car 🚗! I’ll keep an eye out for these issues !! My shit ticks too since I purchased it !

My 09, 4.6-3v has 111,000 miles. Just had a tune-up & plugs. Always proper oil changes. Starting to hear timing chain rattling. I’m too old to do the job. 72y. o. My mechanic is pretty good, but says he doesn’t hear any problems. ? I love my big red Super crew! How do I find someone decent enough to replace the timing chain, etc. ?

I've had personal autos and work autos with this engine. My buddy in Marines father has a cab/livery business in NY city. He'd buy these panther cars at 200k plus and run them till they died in NY stop n go traffic. He'd get 500k regularly at the least, highest cars had a shake over 700k. All serviced on time. Usually jmod so they don't slip as much. I have a 99 Cartier 253K, 07 Designer118K still like new. I've never had plug, timing issues. I always pulled covers and checked them at every 50k after 100k. I've been lucky but I do take care of them. I do my service on time every time. This is key. All have their issues. I've had alot say trans, plugs, fresh air leak, air ride etc but most besides vent leak is a service issue. Most don't do services religiously. These modulars need it or urr asking for issues. Our work trucks and vans have had some of the issues mentioned. All was bought new or close but not serviced on time. It's hit or miss. I do have a rattle and know my 99 is gonna need a timing set in future. Just a slight rattle. I also removed back cats. I live in a no sniffer county. And I modify the air box to get more air. Not a cai but remove the 2 inch horn and cut hole to 4.5 inch. Engines are air pumps. Faster in and less restriction out is best for a V8. Also they have another issue most don't know, the pass side frame behind rear A arm mount on outside will rust. It's a easy reroute AC drain line on either side of frame. Another is the foam Ford used that holds water and will rust. I use Eastwoods internal frame and chassis black, farm implement paint etc. In rust country it will rot away if not. Also use 1 quart of any new, used oil, same with trans fluid, 1 tube of grease, 1 wax ring toilet flange gasket. Heat and mix in old pot. Spray, brush etc all under and inside cavities. Will NOT EVER RUST. Pap was 80 and still doing this. I do this. It outlasts, anything u can buy and it costs $6 with used fluids. Most wax has no oils or very lil. I live in rust belt so it's a must. Not saying the video is attacking the 4.6 but just saying my experience. If they had another 75 hp and same with torque it'd be a perfect engine in panthers or trucks. I wish they still was made. I've owned them for 15 years and wish I'd owned them for 25. They was used in many autos and are a good reliable engine. Like he said check the plugs, most that popped had only a few threads. Using a bore scope u can pop 1 out and look. If urr is this type just be aware to do as he said. Both of mine look good with good threads. There's kits to fix this if u like so that's not a worry. Also I use a extra oil and trans cooler. They're cheap or u can use a junk yard 1 if u like. Heat and the soft shifts kill trans. I'm cheap so I save $$ in JB economy. But use motorcraft parts. Also plug door drains and fill with baby, mineral, or melted Vaseline. Let sit for a week and drain and save. And I hear so many say air bags suck. They do when u don't protect them. I see ppl swap and not put anything on them then say they suck cause they don't last a decade. Coat with Vaseline once a yr. It's rubber. It will crack. I spray with 303 all rubber parts and they last forever. Spray tires inside and out and do once a yr and they won't crack and last too. Bags get extra cause it's under car with all the elements and snow, mud etc. I know this is long but I love these engines, cars and compared 2 most made during or since then are not. Service on time, protect what u got and enjoy. Nothing rides better than the panthers but maybe a Citroën suspension from the past. That's the smoothest riding car I've ever drove or rode in. Lincolns 2nd best. They are the 1st car to get a 5 star crash rating across the board. There's a reason why they are still used as taxis and cop cars. If the other 2 mfg would've kept making the Caprice and the Chrysler type of cop cars like the Furys of old, maybe they'd not been so popular. They get good mpg, reliable and safe. I wish they still made them and station wagons. Idk why we had to do the SUV BS. A full frame sedan are hard to beat, like a sore Peter.

The spark plug issues are unforgivable. What other modern engine has a reputation for blowing a plug out of it’s threads, and there’s a $100 ignition coil hard bolted directly above that gets blown to dust when the plug rockets. Then to improve the situation they came up with the ridiculous super long reach plugs that break below the threads on removal. But the logic of the variable valve timing on three valve variants takes the cake. While every other oil pressure controlled VVTI system (all of them?) the fazer relaxes to low/slow rpm cam timing at idle and opens the control solenoid so oil pressure pushed the phaser to the advance/ high rpm setting when oil volume and pressure are most available. Not Ford. At idle the diminished pressure and volume are called upon to push and hold the phaser into low rpm mode. So when the oil passages get blocked (shame on the owner) or the oil pump gets lazy you get rough idle along with the noisy chain running on loose guides. Other than that, what reason could you possibly find to avoid these engines like the plague ?

The 4.6L 2. Valve was used in F150 Applications through 2010 regular cab standard models.

To avoid breaking plugs off in a 3v do them hot with an impact. I am a tech and have never broke a single one off and yes copper anti size going on them going back in.

I’m considering a 2008 low mileage P51a Roush Mustang. Supercharged…wonder if I should be concerned with the 4.6L since they forged a lot of internals.

The 2v 4.6 was offered in the panther platform until 2011, 3rd gen (02-05) explorer, on base model f150s until 2010, and on the e series vans until their discontinuation in 2014

4.6 plastic guides for the timing chain fall in the oil pan and block the oil pickup tube for the oil pump.

Recently purchased 2010 F150 xl Regular Cab 4x2 4.6 24 valve... 38k miles. Runs great except for the exhaust coming through the heat vents. Also, this could be the only post millennium full production vehicle with no interior cabin filter; just the engine air filter. Nice to know the fuel intake has better air quality than the passenger compartment. Make it make sense. Scheduled to go in for an exhaust leak check.

I have a 2001 f150 5.4 2v with 331000 miles on it. Had to replace the intake a year ago. Other than that no problems been very reliable.

2002 f150 320,000 miles. Have used castrol 5w20 conventional oil since new, which I can’t find anymore. Will it effect anything if I have to switch to motorcraft synthetic blend?

333k 4.6 L Triton 01 supercrew Work it hard drive it daily In all of these miles only a few coil pacs and a starter ,one set of spark plugs ac just quit at 300k One of the best trucks any body has ever made. Still going starting to throw a little smoke I’m sure it could use a valve job.

Love the looks but having had a King Ranch with a 5.4 I'm well aware of the timing chain problems but I heard they could go just over 200,000 km before it was wise to replace. What would a ballpark cost be to replace a timing chain in the 4.6? Thanks

If oil is changed the tensioners are fine. If not? The 5 cent gasket blows out because they used plastic housing instead of cast. Mellings brand tensioners are cast iron seals itself. The motor loves a super flow mellings pump too. They make a really nice timing kit with better guide rails too.

4.6 2V 1991-2010 , improved gens during that time.. On the 4valve Timing Chain issues/failure is related to the pivot-pins breaking.. this is due to constant High RPM use , the factory pin that screws into block is of smaller diameter/larger outer , 9mm upgrade resolves this/same diameter both ends (Accufab explains this).. These engines are very reliable, but clean/quality oil & keeping it topped off is Key... '01 Crown Vic LX Sport , 2nd owner,one repaint 15yrs, Whole driveline Synthetic fluids, 387K miles H.way,, motor untouched/just routine maintenance

195k Miles on a 2007 Mustang GT not a single issue . Only thing I’ve done is Coil Packs and Spark plugs @ 183k , oil changes. Everything else original , even the clutch. I’m going to turbo it this year to show the DURABILITY OF THE 4.6 3V! MMR sells metal tensioner to replace the faulty stock plastics and much more durable parts all over for these engines.

4-valve was also used in the Lincoln Aviator 2003-2006

Overall they are good, reliable engines.

Mine is a 4.6L triton 2v and has 95k on it and I love every second of it sounds super clean

I really need someone to help me find out what’s going on with my 3v 4.6 - I’ve been having problems with my Mustang feeling like it’s about to die when driving at slow speeds or stopped in traffic for awhile but not in park. It’s so weird. Also I have my transmission doing a loud clunk when turning my wheel putting it in reverse. And lastly my passenger window has no power at all and is stuck a little open so these are the plagues I’ve been stuck with since I first got the car a few months ago it really sucks because I really wanted a fast reliable v8 car you know.

I just picked up a one-owner 2001 f150 4.6 2v. The truck has 355,000 miles on it was driven by the old man until head gasket started leaking on cylinder 1 I did a compression check on the 7 unaffected cylinders and this thing still has almost perfect compression... original engine. The guy said he had timing replaced at 150k and 300k even though he never did have any timing issues in the first place. This old man seriously deserves some kind of award

I have seen lots of vehicles (mostly trucks/SUVs) with the 4.6l that did have triton badging. example: my daily driver, 100% stock

How to stop spark plug blowout on a 4.6L. Install spark plugs in a COLD engine that’s been sitting for awhile and torque to about 20ft lbs *yes that’s higher then factory spec but it works, and won’t strip threads* I’ve used this method for years on many 4.6’s with no blowout issues. I do not use antiseize on my plugs. Even checked the plugs at a later time and non were loose all still tight. As for oil pumps, I’ve honestly never heard of the oil pumps being an issue on the 2 valve variations of the motors. 9.5 out of 10 times if you get a low oil pressure warning it’s because of a bad pressure sending unit not a bad pump itself. Other then that just about everything here is accurate.

I just bought a 09 ford mustang with 4.6L 3v that’s more than “lightly modified -Msi coils -24lb injectors -K&N intake -Bbk long tube headers/ X pipe - 3.73 gears and I knew that something was wrong with the timing because it wouldn’t idle smoothly and kept fluctuating A couple days ago the oil pressure indicator “low oil pressure” came on but only when I’m at stops (signs or lights) I don’t know what it could be but I just parked the car and bought new timing kit and high volume pump because I don’t want to grenade my “new to me” car

The 2 value lasted untill 2011 with the last cats having them being a crown victoria, muercury grand marquis and lincoln town car.

Had two E 150 vans 4.6 triton v-8s ran smooth almost 300,000 miles had to scrape becuase the frames rotted out. How ever the coiles would fail often.

I have 98ford f150 4.6L 4 Wheel Dr. automatic Triton V8 we could not fine Oil pressure switch my gauge is not working anymore , Where is it located

Mine is starting to make a little noise from timing chain when cold. 276,000. But as soon as it warms up it quiets down

I have a Ford F150 XLT 4.6 liter..last week driving at 60 mph I heard a loud hissing from the engine..sounded like air..pulled over lifted the hood steam rolled out from the pass.side from dash/firewall-steam came from radiator, reservoir was empty; could see the coolant in tube at bottom...heater no longer works but truck doesn't overheat..and my check engine light no longer lit? Got the pu 2 mos. Ago check engine light has been on til this incident.. The male people in my life want to go straight to replacing heater core/intake manifold? I wanna check out hoses etc. Need advice anyone?

My 2001 2v truck pi heads have more threads than the 99 2v non-pi heads I removed.

A lot of these common issues are maintenance related. Though sometimes premature failure with proper care and maintenance does happen. If you buy OEM spark plugs now, you won't have any issues. The exhaust manifold issue is a ford thing back to the late 70s early 80s. Lol

Guy I work with had his oil changed and they forgot to put oil in it. I didn't see it myself but he said he drove it 40 miles before he realized it but it still runs to this day.

Funny. In my experience he covered everything bullet proof with Thunderbird 2v 4.6

Those chains rattle for 200k miles from my experience. Lol

The 4.6 was most certainly called the Triton. I have a ‘99 E-150 with a 4.6 and V8 Triton badges on the front fenders.

I honestly want to say also never get the E3 plugs for them either I found out the hard way and had pieces burn off the plug and get into my cylinder and believe it made my vavle stick open and nobody I talked to ever said anything bad about the E3s I honestly believe they should warranty that engine work cause it happen in more than one cylinder like who in the right mind would get them and not know it could possibly grenade the engine now the car is sitting wondering what to do

Just torque the plugs to 20 foot pounds on the 4.6 L Gen 2👍

What do you think about soaking the plugs with something like WD40 before removing them? I have an 09 4.6 f150 w 58k miles. How worried should I be about plugs at this point?

is there an improved alternative for the timing chain guides?
