Big appreciation for your vids over the years. I think the speed square one was the first one I saw years ago.... The only downside to this channel is you do not make enough videos. You are one of the best on youtube. No slick junk, just real deal work.... Thanks for sharing!

I needed to move an old tie rod out to replace a bent one. I tried heat, beat on it, pipe wrench, come a long, finally I drilled and tapped it and put in a grease fitting in the tube. Pumped it full of grease still no dice. Back to the torch, it steamed and boiled and then broke loose and slid out about 6 inches all at once like a cylinder. Learn something every day.

If that farmer wasn't allergic to grease, that axle would probably still have broken, but the repair would have been easier. Great job on making an excellent repair. That axle must have taken quite a hit at some point to even bend the wishbone.

I have a 2444 with a loader. With the bucked loaded I ran hard into the dirt pile. The non-adjustable front tube broke at the center tube. I slid the tractor on the lowered bucket to where I could work on it. I put a truck bed liner in the mud removed, had a local expert weld it, and reinstalled. The all fit like a glove. I was told by local dealer that loader was too heavy for the front axle.

I have seen those axles sleeved with very thick wall tubing and a truss added underneath. You trim some off the smaller telescoping part (most are fixed anyway) and sleeve it. Weld everything up and Bobs your uncle and it will last forever. My neighbor did a 706 axle that had broken that way and it was still good till he sold the tractor. Probably 10 years or so.

i was a farmall dealer mechanic in 74-76 we had a 806 do the same thing but there was a recall on the early 806. some of them came out with a 706 front end. i had to replace the center tube of the axle only.. when installing a heavy duty front loader there were re enforcing pipes that slid inside the front tube. to break the adjustable axles ends loose the shop had a porta power that i loosened one end and soaked it with PB Blaster and pushed it apart to the next bolt hole then went to the other side once they started moving they came apart easy.. the axle you broke was an early model that had the other problem of shearing the axle key on the spindle assembly..

I think the problem with the row crop axles is first they are very thin metal and it’s in two pieces, so there for it rusts faster and since they’re two pieces the weight is pushing down on were the two pieces connect also making it possible to break. That’s why if I had a row crop 806 I’d put a fixed axle on it, thicker metal and the weight is pushing mostly on the center of the axle. But keep in mind this is very rare to happen unless it’s happened before and has been fixed (welded) so don’t go thinking, “oh farmall tractors are junk” their not, their great tractors 🙂

Did you think about just pulling the center section out by loosening the row width adjustment collars and taking the entire wheel mount assemblies from each side and putting them onto the good one?
@xj9ox
@xj9ox Жыл бұрын
That's exactly what I was thinking. The width setting is also relevant to the toe-out that resulted. It looks like the "good" axle was set at least one hole wider than the broken one, so the tie rods would need to be lengthened to suit or the width adjusted narrower.
@EEJester1586
@EEJester1586 Жыл бұрын
I’m not 100% sure but I think the row adjustment of the axle was welded together so you couldn’t move them.

I would replace the axle if I had one ..If not i would try to fix the broken one and give it some braces or some thing to make it stronger With the wheels toed out that far would be hard on the axle hitting big ruts or a ditch
@Ham68229
@Ham68229 Жыл бұрын
Once they break, they're done for, they'll never hold the weight and abuse they take just from normal operation. Hence why that first axle should've been replaced the first time instead of trying to repair.

@@FrancisoDoncona that’s all right just about everything was fighting me every inch. My bad thing was, I had to come back the next week put a water pump on a new tire rod ends, and one of his rear wheels was slipping off the axle. I had to tighten the wedges up. I’m sure I’ll have to do something else to do it bad things come with all of it lol.

These 806 axles are known for being "fragile" in that they don't take much abuse beyond standard use. My uncle caught a drain tile plowing, hit the clutch a little too fast when the front end came up & snap! They built a heavier axle and put it on bigger rubber on all 4 corners at the same time.
