Santiago has a top job in the English teaching industry. He is the managing director of English teaching at Oxford University Press, but English is not his first language. He learned it as an adult when he moved to London in his 20s. This conversation explores how he progressed in his English learning and in his career, while dealing with daily challenges and failures n English. The conclusions are that motivation and positivity are vital, you have to keep going through the difficult times, and you can achieve great things in your career in English even if you're not perfect. This episode should be a boost for the confidence of all English learners! Keep an open mind, keep your eyes on the prize, keep going and your English WILL improve!

A few years ago, I listened to an episode of you describing how your daughter was born and how brave and calm your wife was. I don't know how old your daughter is now, might be a primary school student. After that, due to the huge workload, I didn't continue listening to your podcast. Today, during the Chinese spring festival, I happend to find you and watched this video on youtube, when you were talking about the 3Ps, it kinda fuels me to pick up English again and step on this crazy quixotic adventure of English learning. It is true that we can just enjoy the process of learning, the connection with people, and let go of the perfect accent, perfect grammar, etc.

Impeccable Luke... You wouldn't believe how much I enjoy your episodes. And this particular one has been superb... so rich!! "Connection, not perfection". 35 years ago I went to Australia for 1 year and a half, 99% of the time with country people and workers; and after hearing you saying this phrase: "connection, not perfection" I do realise now that my communication with most of the Aussies was based on connection fundamentally. All the best to you (from the Patagonia Argentina)

Hi, Luke. Like Santi, I am a native Spanish speaker. I agree with him that some accents are prohibitively hard to understand even for upper intermediate English students. Even though that sometimes I feel clumsy when speaking English, as you say, I have to keep going, leaning in the failure. Quixotic targets are inspiring, but we have know that learning a language is a never ending process. It's a crisp midday here in Buenos Aires, so it is nice to crack on with the rest of your episodes.

Keep your chin up!. Exposure is key - reading a lot, listening a lot, socializing a lot in English. Lean into failure, don't hide from it. English is a broad church - there's a lot of diversity in it. Intelligibility and Identity. It is about connection not perfection. As a native Korean speaker, I love the idea that I can make another cultural identity when I speak English. I feel like I am becoming a different character whenever I speak English. Sometimes, I dreamed in English that is not quite often but lead me to "quixotic' world, though which not easy to describe. I am so grateful to know that this channel as well as meet Santiago in the KZfaq.

Santiago's English is definitely "top notch".. Not the faintest doubt about that.. But it is also truth that he didn't lose his Spanish accent through that long journey.. Which is laudable // Thanks so much for sharing this Video with us. It was entertaining and helpful. Keep on posting and Greetings from Spain 🔆

Another amazing podcast. I've listened to this podcast twice as you advised. Some useful insights to take away from this. Especially, the way Santi defined how successful his English is with 2 levels. It's new with me. I will think about more on that "internal definition of success" myself. Thanks a lot!!

Warm greetings from Sri Lanka.I'm going to enjoy this episode very much and so will everyone else listening to this conversation. Natural, spontaneous language is being spoken. As far as OUP products are concerned, I'm a fan of books on English language and I have been using the OALD since 1987 and in addition I like the Oxford Collocation Dictionary, which is with me since 2017. Apart from that I have got other OUP publications, specially those related to language teaching and learning. I have books about English language published by the Cambridge University Press. All these books are very useful. It's encouraging to watch a Spanish speaking English at this level in addition to his achievement in terms of the present job he does at the OUP. It's a good example that even adults can acquire a second language effectively if the right methods are employed and the learner is equipped with the proper attitude. Thanks Luke for bringing this important discussion to your audience who are dedicated to acquiring English as their second language. Bless you two!!!

Thanks teacher Luke, this conversation was so encouraging for me, now I'm getting prepared for an examination to get B2+, or maybe, who knows, get the C1 level. But what made me reflect the most was about the pronunciation is part of my identity and I don't have to speak perfectly but trying to communicate or make myself understood and connect to people

Gran entrevista!

Hello Mr. Luke. I want to tell you that your skills as English teacher are magnífics. I think that teaching a language in context Is the best way of doing. Congratulation to Santiago for having reach such a wonderful job. Besides, the books from the Oxford University are excellent. I have had the opportunity of using them at a private school with little kids who learn English as a second language and the results were very succesfull. Well, Mr. Luke, all my respects to you And keep on sharing your knowdledge! P.D. could you please, pause a little?(for listening to the pronunciation in a better way?
