The 80s VHS look is usually created in After Effects using Red Giant plugins. Today, we'll be creating this VHS effect for free in Hitfilm Express 2017. We'll be making the chromatic aberration / color shift effect to start, then adding noise, Derez, color correction and more.

Thanks for watching! As you create this effect for yourself at home, keep in mind that all aspects of this effect are customisable. For example, the video at 0:45 was most likely created in Adobe After Effects/Premiere with plugins - however, you can probably still create a similar look just by tweaking the settings, and adding external overlay images/effects. Remember guys that vhs is 480p so export it as that if you want it it really realistic

480p you say? Eazy squeezy mayoneezy, just go to the Pixelation part of the Derez effect, set horizontal blocks to 800, vertical to 480, kabam, half the job done.

That's actually simple, make a composite shot with the unedited footage on top of the edited one, draw a rectangular mask on the unedited footage, then keyframe the position of the mask (note, the mask, not the footage) to slide down off screen.

This is so authentic looking, as I have have a lot of VHS tapes and they look just like this, so I know. (Gives away my age.) How about a tutorial on how to get rid of the VHS look, since I do dislike it on my VHS videos that I have transferred to DVD? I will happily supply a sample video for you to test with.:-)

Masking. Put unedited footage on top of edited one, mask it, then set the mask to move down offscreen using keyframes.

Great effect tutorial but when I do this, it slows down the playback and reducing the quality of the playback (setting it from full to half) is counter productive as I can't get a good sense of what looks I want to achieve. What can I do?

Is there a way to edit audio in hitfilm? Like change the pitch of an audio or create an 'underwater' effect. It'll be cool to see a tutorial if you can make it! Anyways love this VHS look.

late, but just get an audio EQ and lower the highs, and that is pretty much the effect. i would add some bubble sounds, slight reverb too, for a more literal underwater sound

Hey! So i'm pretty new with this stuff. How do i make this a preset so don't have to it all over again for every clip? I've been watching tutorials on how to make presets but it doesn't seem to work with these layers or effects. If I mark everything and click create preset, the clip just turns black when I add the preset to it. What am I doing wrong?

You mean, the thin white lines that pop up in a VHS footage? Some people posted free stock videos of those, layer them in like the final plane in this tutorial, just on top of the footage. That's what I did for my fast-forward effect.

No, you clone the layer along with the effect, so the new layer has an entirely new histogram effect applied to it.
