That's the most honest comment that I have ever heard. "If I had a lot of this to do I would go to my other shop and use a power tool "

The number stamped on the heel indicates what size of stock the T&G will be centered on. And as you said, you can use them on thicker or thinner stock. It just means the joint is a little off center.

I've always wondered how one decides that a tongue and grove is needed. For example, I've made table tops, panels, and other things simply gluing the jointed edges together without a tongue and groove. I don't have the sense that the T&G is needed for strength. So, when is it needed? My floorboards are tongue and groove, but they are not glued, as that would not be practical and it would make enormous problems with wood movement. Is that when T&G is needed? Is it really for circumstances when you are _not_ going to glue and are dealing with wood movement? Maybe for the backs on casework? In any case, I've always been confused about this: There are so many T&G planes out there it seems they were needed, but at the same time, I'm not sure when. Thank you for the excellent video. I'll note that I have one of the flip-around Stanley's and find that adjusting the irons is quite fussy because they are two separate irons. Maybe it is just me.

you're right about allowing for wood movement, and yes, it can take a little time to get the 49 an 48 irons adjusted.

Hello Sir. I am affraid i have to tell that thé wooden match planes i got did not match at all. I ve tried several good looking condition ones, almost unused or New or old, about 10, but it does not match at all! I finally bought a métal combinaison plane and it works great.

just check the tongue iron matches the other plane's sole and that the fences are equally distant.

Thank you! What does number "4" on these plains mean?
@gjbmunc

it depends on the maker, but most often it signifies 1/2inch

I have a few sets of match planes, but they don't quite seem to match up perfectly, the faces on the boards are not in the same plane when the tongue is put in the groove. how do you tune and adjust the planes to get a perfect fit? thank you!
@gjbmunc
@gjbmunc 2 ай бұрын
it's a matter of ensuring that the fences are the same distance from the irons. and also to be certain that you use both from the same side of the work pieces.

Suggestion, Mr. Blackburn: place the mic higher on your apron, not on the breast pocket of the apron. In that way, you will not hit it accidentally. Great lesson.
