That is my son’s champion mat! He gave me two of them for my trip around the world. You’re the first person to recognize what they were! That will make him so happy.

Hi MiG Folks - Enjoy tuning in and seeing the sail! Nice music and scenery. Unsure of where you actually are now, or if this is filmed awhile ago. Snowing heavy here in Colorado today! Take good care! Kim and Bruce

How are the solar panels working to keep the batteries charged? Do you wish you would have done anything differently (so far)?
@SV-Mig
@SV-Mig 4 ай бұрын
Hi Chris. We had no power issues whatsoever. However, we did not use the motor. We can drain the motor which is only 200 amp at 48 V in about 40 minutes at four knots motoring for example. We can charge that up 100% almost in about six hours with the generator. To charge that with our solar capacity of 360 W at 72 V would take two very nice sunny days. So real world usage if you don’t motor much it’s adequate if you don’t motor at all on passages it’s wonderful. Because we dump all of that 48 V into the 12 V via a converter and charger, we basically have more 12 V battery bank than we would ever use. So as we came near land we charged up the 48 V bank 100% then we turned off the DC TO DC charger had plenty of motor capacity to motor into the harbor no problem with plenty of 48 V left over for an emergency.

Thank you for the info. We just spent the last ~ 100 days modifying our 27 foot Newport from an Atomic 4 gas engine to a 48V electric motor with 200 amp hours of batteries so your results have been of interest to me along with the fact that we are also from Anacortes. We have taken her for a couple short spins around Cap Sante to start to figure out actual electrical consumption ("your mileage may vary"). I wish you good luck on your voyage and hope you have a safe, uneventful passage. @@SV-Mig

We sail an Island Packet 35. It is extremely stable in rough weather. I have always been fascinated with small boats off shore. As someone who has sailed your previous larger boat and now this, what is your biggest take away on how this small boat handles rough weather off shore? Or any other things that people would not expect from this boat. Thanks!

I have sailed Island packets for thousands of offshore miles on deliveries. I used to offer a discount on my captains fees for Island packets because they were such great boats. Really a bombproof offshore platform. Wandering Dolphin, our former boat was a flush deck, custom aluminum performance cruiser designed by the legendary Gary Mull and she was a whole different animal. She had a long fin keel and a skeg hung rudder. Her draft was 7’ and she went to windward like a witch. To compare her to any of the full keel offshore tanks is difficult. I can say that the ride on a smaller, full keel boat is definitely more spirited and of course her “Mig’s” performance to Windward is dismal in comparison, however, this little boat has proven to be a safe offshore boat. I believe she can go anywhere that the crew can handle the ride. In a gale, she is not comfortable though due to her size. Her narrow beam compared to a similar Island Packet 32 means that the Nor’Sea 27 is not as comfortable in any sea conditions however when things get really rough and the seas are monsters she comes into her element and her better secondary stability comes into play. She bounces back up from near knockdowns like a weeble wobble. Again, at the expense of crew comfort. as in most things with sailboats it’s all a trade-off.

@@SV-Mig makes sense. Thank you for the response. We subscribed and will be following along. We just made a rough Gulf Stream crossing and we were so impressed with how the IP just ate up the mikes like a freight train. As for small boats though, I think yours is about as good as it gets for a small off shore cruiser. Good luck with everything!

I assume you mean the “Elven Song” by Tilman Sillescu. My theme song is “Hold Back the Sun” by the Lighthearts the meaning behind that is don’t let age stop you stay young as long as you can.
