How do select the right value of mov for either AC or DC source

I connected a varistor accross L & N, initially it worked but when i came back after a few minutes the appliance was not working. Turns out there was 220v in both L & N which got solved after removing the vatistor. What could have happened?

Completely logical to put the fuse first otherwise it would become dangerous and could create a fire since the only protection at this point would be the breaker in the mains panel.👍

Sir , does an MOV have plus (phase) or minus (neutral) terminals . Can we connect either of the terminals to either phase or neutral.
