This is a short description of some of the things I used to make this work. I did this swap on a budget so I used a lot of spare parts, junk yard parts and off the shelf parts from other vehicles. You have to find what works and make it fit. If you have a basic knowledge of cars and some fabrication skills you can do this swap. I am using stock svo pistons not cut for valve reliefs, stock distributor, stock electronics. The computer does not care how many cams it only cares about incoming air, air temp, coolant temp, 02 readings, map readings and vacuum leaks. Standalone computer is nice but not a must.

there's 4 for cheap where I live, wish i had dry storage space (not morning-dew wet lawn space). I let go of my 1986 Turbocoupe just when gas prices hit $5 a gallon after 9-11--and had a V8 to fill up. Last year I did better when gas prices went up--had a 1999 Ford Escort pulling 42 mpg and hit every car event in a 10 hour round trip on a tank of gas. sure didn't ride nearly as well as my ol' t'bird, though. hope someone saved that SVO, i think people are finally stopping doing V8 swaps on those and recognizing them as investments again.

Love the SVO's...this is when Ford was being more experimental. Thinking they may of used the same motor on 1990s Thunderbird, Merkur XR4ti. Remembered a buddy of mine after couple months after he's purchased one...we went for quick lunch run...i mean quick, nearly put a different COLOR on his new seat interior...lol. But this one is rare and very interesting, would never thought the VOLVO head rendered this way. Really great work Sir! Thank you for sharing appreciate this great video. For sure it took lots of time...put into it. BTw..does anyone mentiones you sound like the actor "Sam Elliott" WYatt Buurrp movie..lol just kidn.

Ford experimented with turbo 4 bangers before the SVO but what really hit the gas (pun intended) was high gas prices in the beginning of the 1980's. Hot Rod Magazine even proclaimed on its front cover that V8s were dead, the Buick V6 was going to be the hot rod engine of choice for the future. Ford did use the same engine--sans intercooler--on 1980's thunderbirds (in 1987 they went from the T3 turbo to an IHI unit to make more lower RPM torque--I had a 1986 'bird with the SVO intercooler in the grill, there wasn't much more than the factory 88 hp below 3,000 RPM but once you got up on 12 lbs of boost on low octane pump gas, it was keeping up to V8s of the time) and Merkur XR4Tis, but the 1990's Thunderbirds had supercharged V6's. I always thought of the turbo coupe t birds as a solid axle response to the Porsche 944. Mine just ate up the interstate miles--without a doubt the best $1,000 car I ever owned, back when that got you a turnkey vehicle ready to register.

Lots of smart work on that engine 😯 I've had people give improvement names to some custom things I've built on my 2.0 Ford engine and my custom BMX SE XL assassin frame build. One comment was that it was a Frankenstein build. I'll take that as a compliment they were just implying that it was one of a kind with more super qualities then stock builds or the average standard builds. Joey ⚓🇺🇸

Will Riley It would actually be easier to bolt in a 5.0 pushrod or coyote but it's all about the satisfaction of building something different and cool instead of having a belly button car(everybody has one). It also isn't about the power, could have made more power with a v8 or some other type of Japanese or Euro engine, again it was all about being different and to see if I could do it. I've been driving it around quite a bit, taking it to car shows and such. It makes good power at 18psi and so far no problems.

For any of the new guys showing up like i was the block he is reffering to is the second gen ranger block depending your part of the coubtry that would be an 89-92.5 or 89-94 these are essentially first generation blocks with a dis system snd different auxilery shaft over all stronger 94-03 are the weaker blocks99-03 have weak rods. Just because you have a stronger block dont throw a big turbo on it your crank is good for 350-400 max hp most of you have old engines so 250-275 hp on origional high mileage bearings if you have a 2.3 your good for a max 6 psi safe ish at 4-5 psi id you have a 2.5 dont try it 2.5 has weak stock rods and weaker blocks throw a rod and your block is gonna be the new entry to narnia if your gonna run boost esslinger racer walsh or boport but my overall recomendation is spend the 5 k get a built boport top end and and esslinger bottom end with a stock 2.5 crank improved rods and stock pistons your good for close to 220 at the wheel with a tune

Miguel Cuevas You do not have to cut pistons for valve reliefs but not doing so makes it an interference motor meaning if something happens to the belt it will bend valves. mine has not been cut and have revved it to 7000 rpm with no probs.

It looks like it is factory I love builds like this never been a fan of the 2.3 but the Volvo head with turbo looks like it’s right. Real eco boost u must be a machinist by trade

I like what you did... But wonder why? the level of work done could have been better served with a new eco boost crate engine?

+Black Box because I can. Anybody can put any kind of motor in just about anything. True hot rodding is taking stuff that makes no sense or doesn't go together and making it work.

It's designed to also fit a V8, so it looks a little smaller with one of those installed.

Are the valves /pistons now in an interference setup? I recall that the original engine is non interference.

So why did you install the Volvo Head ? Better flow I would imagine. What kind of power is this setup making compared to before ?

More horsepower using less boost is what I've heard. The 1987 SVO was going to use a DOHC 2.3T. Ford contracted Jack Roush to build the head but Ford caned the SVO. Roush did however build several DOHC heads for the 2.3T. I think Roush has one and Ford has the other in their museums.

It probably came down to cost...I mean why else would Ford choose to breathe on an OLD school Iron Block and Head that they have been mfg for a long long time rather than go with a new and more efficient design... I mean its not as if Ford didn't know better... Had to be cost. The SVO already EXCEEDED the price of a Brand New 5.0 V8.... The buying public simply didn't understand the math...most chose the 5 point Oh. Ford had some balls just putting a Turbo on an ancient block n head and then asking a major premium on top... They COULD HAVE gotten the premium had they actually put out a much more modern I-4 Turbo Engine package...Like I said, its not as if they didn't know how. All Aluminum Block with an Aluminum 4 valve head would have been great starting points. Shame.
The 1986 Mustang SVO stops running - That’s not good
