This is my 1988 Pontiac Formula Firebird. Originally equipped with a 305 TBI. I swapped to a 5.7 350 TPI engine out of a 1992 Z28 Camaro. I bought the engine from Hawk's Motorsports. I was told the motor had 72k miles. I did see pictures of the car, but who knows. Hawk's lied about everything else. I bought the car with 88k miles on the odometer. The engine was replaced once already. It ran great, but the transmission was slipping. I was told before I got the car. I put a fresh rebuilt tranny in the car. I pulled the 305 TBI and installed the 5.7 TPI I got from Hawk's. The car now has 96k on the body.

I'm going to upload a very detailed video with a whole list of the money and problems they've cost me. I should have sued. I'll post more on the car.
And I'll post details on how to do the TBI to TPI swap/conversion.
The point in this video is how it idles. It is way worse than it sounds in the video. Anything will help me figure this out on the Tuned Port Injection. Any ideas?????
Reaplced:
So far I have replaced - cap(twice), rotor button(twice), plugs, wires, whole distributor, ignition control module(ICM), idle air control valve(IAC), PCV, Manifold Pressure Sensor(MAP), fuel filter(twice), fuel injectors, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, throttle position sensor(TPS), vacuum lines, O2 sensor, ignition coil,(other parts I had to replace thanks to Hawks terrible "trusted motor" were) fuel inlet and out lines off the intake, alternator, intake gaskets, starter, oil pump, oil pan, water pump, thermostat, radiator, hoses, heater core, battery cables, alternator power supply line, & I reset the timing with a timing light several times. I've pulled all the plugs and re-checked the gaps I initially put on the plugs. I have the timing at 6 advanced. I've tried zero TDC and it ran alot worse. From what I gather 6 advance is what TPI should be at.
Symptoms:
Hard starting. It had a hesitation when you
put a load on the throttle. Not all the time. And not past higher RPMs. It feels like it doesn't have all the power. You can't get it to powerbrake. Sometimes when you drop it in gear, it'll shut off. Especially if it isn't warmed up. Or when you're at a stop(i.e. on the brake) it'll try to jerk forward or push through. Other times it'll act like it's going to shut off. Alot of the time it doesn't start. it does not run smooth most the time. It will idle low and act like it's struggling to stay running. Almost like it's missing or trying to shut off. It doesn't smoke at all. Doesn't backfire. The engine light is not on. I don't know what else to replace or try. Any ideas???
Alot of these parts were either damaged thanks to Hawk's and what they, not only sent me, but how they carelessly packaged the engine, or how they stored the engine.
DO NOT BUY FROM HAWKS MOTOR SPORTS!!!!!!

Thats why i would have a garage professionally do it. Who knows if a wire is wrong?

It's been a number of things. Vacuum leaks and parts failing. But i do drive it daily. Well.... until it gives me a new issue which is a very often occurrence lol

@@NotAGarage Yeah it sucks going through all that and your limited on driving it, you can't even take it to a car show driving the car. You want to make sure that thing is dependable, I had a IROC-Z once kept blowing out that cheap 700R4 transmission, put in a durable Turbo 350, well the A/C stopped working because the transmission needed vacuum, the speedometer didn't work because it was signal, the Turbo 350 was Mechanical, I washed under the hood blew out the Throttle sensor, after spending about $500.00 a month into it, I got rid of the junk, now I would only get a 82-84 Camaro and put the IROC-Z body panels on it. Sometimes it's not worth the Stress and Aggravation. Out thanks for posting the video it's different and also the headaches you've gone through it etc

Iac (idle/air control) sensor controls the idle. Im sure you gotten it figured out by now

This issue was resolved shortly after I posted this video. But unfortunately more issues have followed on the engine lol

I put a 85 TPI on my 92 roadmaster 350. Uesd and e-bay harness and computer and chip and changed to 92 sensors. Put in my 65 Buick wagon with a camaro t-5 trans. Runs excellent.

That is awesome! Unfortunately I didn't document any of the swapping or removal and multiple installations when I had did this many years ago. I just started making videos and trying to record mostly everything I do on the cars now. Man I'd love to see that! It sounds like a very unique build!! I have this TPI running now. I drive her daily. Still not without issues though.

Where is your Mass air flow sensor?

It has a MAP sensor not a MAF. I believe 85-89 TPI used MAF and 90-92 used only the MAP. The 5.7 TPI engine shown I have installed in my 88 Firebird is a 1992 block out of a 1992 Z28. But!!!! I do have it resolved as of 2 weeks ago!!! I have to finish editing and upload the video

its a speed density system uses the map sensor. 85 to 89 mass air flow sensor 90 to 92 manifold absolute pressure sensor. if you are going to swap any car or truck to tpi the speed density 90-92 system is the best choice no mass air flow sensor

Did you do a compression or leak down test on the engine before you installed it? Did you get the computer with the engine? Really need more info before anyone can advise you of what might be wrong.

Yeah I got then ECU with it. They were supposed to bypass the VATS system. They said they would, didn't say they were charging me. Then when I finally got ahold of Bruce at HAWKS after calling for several days, he said "oh yeah, we went ahead and charged $49.99 to your card on file you paid for the engine with." Without my permission. And he wouldn't give me the TPI out of a 88 I paid for because it had 23k. And he wouldn't make his money back he said, unless I bought the rear end, and transmission as a package. So anyway, they didn't do it right. I had to keep calling until I could speak to their 'tech.' Who said "oh I must of soldered the wrong wire." And then told me which one to solder... so I did... after they charged me... without my permission... and didn't do it right... But!!! I did do a compression test last year. All the cylinders were close. Nothing low or far apart that I can remember. Is there anything you can think might be the issue? It doesn't smoke at all. It's not backfiring, but it feels like it almost. My engine light is still hooked up. And does work. I have unplugged things to test it. It was on when I unhooked the wire to my ECU when I did the timing. But the engine light is not on. I forgot to mention i put a new O2 sensor in it as well. The valve train doesn't look wore or dirty when I removed the valve covers to rotate the engine by hand. All valves opened and closed. What do you think??

@@NotAGarage Sounds like possibly a computer control issue? Is there a dyno shop near you, maybe they can figure out the confuser? It might be a good idea to look at a newer more progamable friendly operating system. I don't think very many places burn chips anymore? The older systems don't have much support anymore, if anything is burnt you might have a hard time tracking down new parts? You might be able to swap in an junkyard LS computer? Make sure to get what plugs in it and as long as you can get the harness attached to it to adapt to the old FI. Make sure to label the harness when you remove it from the donor vehicle. The LS computer is easily reprogrammed with the proper software that any chassis dyno shop should be able to do. Good luck, I hope you get her sorted out.

So I just got a 1988 Firebird and the motor has rod knock and I’m swapping in a L98 out of a 1992 z28 same as you were there any different sensors or any extra wiring or was it all a somewhat straight swap over?

It was definitely not a straight swap over as far as electrical. But I went from TBI to TPI. Is that what you're doing? If so it won't plug n play. If you're going from TPI to later TPI just reuse your harness and swap the engine. Other wise you'll have to go through the vats and other problems. I have a video explaining some of this. I will get a video done explaining what all I went through and needed to do in order to go from TBI to TPI, specifically a 1992 TPI setup. Let me know what engine you had so I can try to help explain more

One of my vacuum lines had a new crack. I readjusted my IAC. And I reset the timing. I don't see any extreme idle surging. The engine does rev itself about 100rpms after the it's has been at operating temperatures for a long period of time, and when it's in park. So, I still have a small idle issue. But nothing serious. And it doesn't run rich anymore!
