Instead of placing the compost close to the toilet, put it where you are going to place non-food plants. Dig a trench, line it with 12cm of mulch, fill it with toilet waste, covering it with 5cm of clean mulch each time. The mulch will accelerate the decomposition. Adding worms will also help. Note: worms should be placed in the clean mulch. AFA collecting the waste, use mulch to cover your droppings in the bucket, instead of your current material.

If you can find a coffee roaster in your area, the skins from the roasted beans, called coffee chaff, is great for composting human waste. Maybe you are lucky and there is a roaster in your area. It composts down very hot, breaking things down more quickly. It also is a waste product from roasting. The smell from the chaff helps cover the smell of the waste really well too. Good luck!!

This solves two problems at once. I just commented on your Problems/Challenges video that growing your own coffee would be cool. Sure it would be alot of work, but it seems it is a large part of your emissions and coffee is awesome. You could roast your own coffee beans, then use the chaff in composting. Two birds with one stone.

In my personal experience, the absolute key to making a composting toilet system work well is to separate the urine from the feces. Why? 1) It keeps the feces dryer in the bucket, reducing smell significantly. If you mix urine and feces, you need ridiculous amounts of absorbent material, in your case sawdust, if you want to keep it dry. If you separate the urine, you can still add some absorbent material, but don't need much at all. 2) The bucket can be emptied maybe a third as often, will be much lighter and a *lot* nicer to handle. 3) If you want to, you can collect the urine to use as fertiliser 4) Composting the feces will in my experience be almost impossible if you don't separate out the urine either because A) you don't mix in absorbent material and then what you have in the bucket will be a liquid slush, or B) you do mix in a lot of absorbent material and it will therefore be hard to compost because you'll have too much of the absorbent. Sawdust in itself will basically not compost and if you have too much of it in relation to the feces you'll just have a dry cake. So, is it difficult to separate out the urine? Not at all. By a kit for it, for example a Separett. Works like a charm.
@juha-mattikoponen1625
@juha-mattikoponen1625 10 ай бұрын
Sawdust will not compost? What is this sorcery? Even full tree roots will compost in a matter of years. It will just not degrade as fast as some other bio material. And in any case you want to compost human waste for several years before putting it in to a say example in to a food garden bed. I don't have opinion on separating waste, but I would allocate a fairly big area for this kind of compost. That way you could have some parts composting and getting ready for reuse while other parts are still breaking down to be used.
@DanielAnundi
@DanielAnundi 10 ай бұрын
@@juha-mattikoponen1625 Of course sawdust will eventually decompose, but from a compost perspective it takes a long time to turn into soil that can be used for gardening, which I'm assuming is the goal here (otherwise a missed opportunity). That's at least my experience based on the sawdust I produce from my sawmill, but that's obviously based on the types of trees used for milling here in the Nordics. Also, at least when it comes to the sawdust we have around here, it has a lower pH than regular soil, so a compost containing a lot of sawdust would not be suitable for growing most vegetables. If you want to use soil from human feces to grow edible crops, the recommendation around here is to compost it for two years, which I do myself and get lovely soil for my garden. I have two containers that I rotate on a two year basis. Do you have a different experience from composting feces or sawdust yourself?

Interesting. In my system, I use rice hulls, and the nitrogen from the urine is vital in balancing the carbon from my cover material. About smell, there really isn't any. Hide the evidence and there is no smell. With the turnover from all those people as well, they are swapping buckets frequently. Eric in Japan

Excellent suggestion! I encourage you to Google search for a "Pipe top turbine ventilator". It is wind dependent, but it will create a negative air pressure in your holding chamber, exhausting odor and speeding the desiccation process. As an option, you can also choose a stand alone a solar powered exhaust ventilator with a substantial battery that can run for several 24 hour periods. Should be possible because DC axial fans require very little energy.

It seems like in the future, you could make raised toilets above the composting system. There could be two outhouses on rails that move along above the compost containers. At the start of each week the toilet is moved one space over six collection pits. Then when the compost is finished you go back to the end.

Suggestion: for the new toilet.. remove the top wood panel above the door and replace it with woodframe and cut some a steel mesh for ventilation so no flies or other critters are getting in. Also add some small plants or hang them from the roof.... like Mint or lemon grass, spiders, bugs and mosquitos don't like those plants. As for the The Poop open storage system.. Poop Sign has some Bird poop on it. at 32:21.. now thats S**t.

Separate urine into a small tank. Then mix 50/50 with water, and use on plants and trees. Poop should go into a sealed area that has a vent to the roof for air. After pooping, drop sawdust, wood chips, peat moss, even leaves on top. When full, remove container filled with poop and dump into a compost pile and cover with straw, leaves, sawdust, etc. The Humanure Handbook is a great resource.

When I lived in Tanzania. There were lots of development projects to help educate local people about clean hands and why not to do any open defecation. One common solution was to the build out houses that could just be pulled over new holes. This way you would just simply dig a new hole next to it. You would also use the dirt from the new hole to cover up the old one. Another great benefit of this as you could. Plant fruit trees over the old defecation.

Did you forget the green layers in the compost? Weeds and mimosa leaves will do; anything fresh/green; turns to dirt very fast, but you need all three: dry (carbon): hay,sawdust, wood chips, green (nitrogen): weeds leaves, and poo (ammonia/ fertilizer). In the desert I have to add water, as we get little rain (7-9"/yr). I don't stir it; it just breaks down naturally.

I have to oil wooden handles annually, and maybe both Project Kamp and I could benefit from the collective wisdom. A different note about the assorted wood projects, both carpentry and woodworking: am impressed with the work that goes into these. super interesting! just for inspiration for everyone reading this, we are using a different system. we don't like walking around with buckets full of poop so we decided to build a small, lightweight poop house which is easy to move. we dig a deep hole, the deeper the longer it can stay on its place, and place the house on top of it. when the hole is full, we dig another hole, move the toilet and close the old one. it takes around a year for us to fill a hole (on average 6 people use it) and after moving it 2 or 3 times you can open up the first hole. the digging will be super easy because it has turned into beautiful compost and you can use it directly on the garden. seperating the pee works great as well, mostly against smell.

I suggest you use the current (and past) poop pits in the same fashion that permaculture banana circles are built. Plant a variety of fruit and or nut trees (or berry bushes) about 15' away from the center of the poop pit in a circle. Use the very center (over the poop pit) as a place to deposit heavy organic waste that will take time to decompose. Using this technique, you can draw on the organic nutrients of the poop pit following decomposition and no one is in danger of stepping into the poop pit. Everybody (including Nature) wins. 😊

Wow, really cool idea, I hope they see it!! Plus what a way to make a poop pit look way better. A couple tree circles around the property would be awesome

Impressive effort. I'd recommend trying to add the sink on the inside of the toilet and have a more convenient system that can be opened without hands so that germs don't go on the door and sink before people can properly wash.

Killer content this week dudes. It adresses societal issues, and shows a sound construction methodology. The siding is primo!. I would have solar vented the " "chamber but not being there it is difficult to asses. I think the composting is a bit dry but that is your environment. Keep on posting Dudes🎉🎉🤙🖖👍👍👍👍

Your poo seems very liquid, either separate the pee from the actual poo, or, add more than 1 spoon after each passage. There is no need to make the buckets of poo connect with one another. Alternate between a layer of poo and a layer of hay should be less work and allows a aerobic deterioration of the organic matter. Otherwise it will have a hard time composting.

In india we just digs a big Hole ground ..about 5-6 feet length and breadth and 7-8 feet Height and installs Concrete Rings or Stone walls without flooring and installs Pipe line into it .. Its simple and most efficient way to deal with poop .

The job is well done, congrats, and good to see that you are busy with compost, that means you are planning to grow lots of vegetables. In this case I suggest adding charcoal to compost, it will become a biochar.

You need a foot pump for the water. Cleaner than many dirty hands touching the tap after pooping . To have non smelling composting, separate the pee from the poop.

First let me say that my wife and I enjoy watching your progress. Now, that being said, just a word of awareness. During the occupation of the Japanese military of Korea, the Japanese army practically destroyed the soil witch limited the ability to grow crops/veggie's. With the lack of manure the Korean farmers had no choice but to use human wast as fertilizer for the food crops. Long story short, many Koreans have come down with stomach cancer. Feel free to research.

Add Rain Collector up on the roof and a water tank, and the water collected from the rain can be used to wash hands on the sink outside, also I think there's a way to make a pressurize water tank for the Faucet.

Great build, Three things I see that's needed 1. The tiny water basin / bowl is far to small for washing hands properly ! 2. . A longer + bigger water tap, to extend over the bigger basin. 3. Side Pane for cover, at washing area, for when the rain + wind come lashing in.

I highly recommend testing out a biogas digester system. There is a lot of energy there - especially with so many people coming and going. they are easy to implement, make little to no smells, and provide both cooking gas and fertilizer. One could argue they are also easier to maintain than composting.
@jonmoore1614
@jonmoore1614 10 ай бұрын
You probably could do both, but I wouldn't use human compost on food crops unless you know for sure that you got the temperature high enough to kill pathogens, but with biogas the microbes do all that work.

The toilet solution seems very temporary still. I think your final solution should look something like the "omnivore composter". I imagine a sump tank with a pump that foods into the composter to keep it full. Manual labor for this job is a disease outbreak waiting to happen. Dig big holes, build big tanks, and budget electricity to waste processing. Actually visit waste processing plants too.

I see in the drone shot that your hay fields have had a second cutting. Very good. In this photo the left field is already baled and the right field is cut but not bailed yet. I hope you are well paid by the farmer who cuts and bales this hay. Good quality hay in Portugal is quite valuable. 😊 Do you get three cuttings of hay from these fields per year?

What is really needed is a pit about 10 feet deep then pack stones around the entire wall then use concrete to close the opening only leaving enough space for dropping to go through...then retro fit the new structure that was build in this video... also wood ash can be use to mitigate the smell

You are going to have a pathogen transfer problem, as there are too many hot spots. The light switch should be on a Infra Red sensor. There should also be a similar type of light above the sink, for winter time when there is less daylight. Similarly the tap for the water container is going to be another pathogen hot spot. Again this needs to be touch free.

The reason it smells is because you have the urine and solid waste going into the same receptacle. If you adopt separating toilets the toilet cleanup jobs would be FAR less disgusting and I'm sure you'd have alot less hesitation from the crew and far fewer complaints when they get rotated onto that detail. If you used separating toilets, you'd have desiccated solid waste combined with wood chips that doesn't stink, and is far easier to deal with and compost. Alongside that you'd have urine that you can then store for several days or weeks in a tank, then combine with water in a 50/50 concentration to make very useful fertilizer for trees and other non-food plants.
