Julie has such style when she sings high notes, her face gleams and looks so good, as opposed to singers today who look like they are constipated when they sing high notes.

I agree Shams. There are few singers now with this talent like Kelli O Hara Audra Mc Donald Laura,Osnes Laura Benanti and Sierra Boggess . I admire Dame Julie Barbara Cook Deanna Durbin Jeanette Mc Donald and other Broadway and Hollywood sopranos . Julie in her younger years was an unique soprano Sadly in later years she started to sing in lower keys and not the best repertoire for her clair and beautiful lyric coloratura soprano voice. She had the tragic operation but as Shams I prefer the fifties sixties and seventies Dame Julie Andrews I saw Dame Julie Andrews live in Victor Victoria on Broadway in 1995 .The voice wasnt the same but the talent the carisma and the charme was still there and I loved her performance. Julie named Maria Callas as a sagitarian.They met when Julie was doing My Fay Lady on Broadway in 1956 and Mara asked Julie how she could sing eight performances a week and she answered that she couldnt do it.Callas also saw Barbara Cook in Candide but she didnt see her backstage but as Berstein said She would kill for your high E flats..But Callas respected these two great Broadway sopranos who received operatic offers but chose to stay on Broadway. Dame Julie is still active at 87 but I miss her lovely soprano voice I loved since I saw her in The Sound of music.

These shows were beautifully mounted. Each show cost an astronomical $250,000.00 in 1971, Julie was in superb voice and form for each and every episode. The shows were filmed in LA with a live studio audience. Some collectors taped them on VHS and later transferred them to DVD. Many bootleg copies of this show are for sale on the internet. I wish this show would be officially released as a DVD box set.

This show should have been a bigger hit than it was. The problem was that ABC foolishly put it on at 10 PM. Crazy thing to do with an obviously "family" oriented show. It also was up against Canon, which was a big hit show. Later, ABC did something strange. They sometimes aired the show at 8:30 PM and sometimes at 10 PM. The final nail in the coffin was moving it to Saturday nights at 9 PM against MTM and Bob Newhart. Had the show been given a better time slot, ABC would have had a major hit. Nothing about the show itself was bad, as the 7 Emmys it won clearly testified.

They did exactly the same thing to the Judy Garland show in the early 60s - she also had Peggy Lee and Robert Goulet on her show.. which is a very similar format to this. CBS, in their infinite wisdom, pitted it opposite bonanza 🤦♀️ producers got talents happy to work and then didn't know what to do with them that actually gave them top billing over other stuff it seems 🤷 very sadly our loss more than theirs.

Blown away by Julie Andrews! I wish I can see her onstage performing! Thank God for video posts! Her movies am watching on Anazon, Netflix ! My heart feels heavy thinking what joy she could have continued to give the world if it were not for those horrible doctors! God loves her ! To this day she's still using her VOICE for great causes! Despite everything, she continues to shine & inspire! She is the most loved artist in the world! Thank you for all your awesome uploads!

This emmy award winning show suffered the same fate as The Bob Newhart variety show in the 60s and the variety show Van Dyke and Company. All were emmy award winning shows that got shifted around on the networks' schedule and never drew the ratings they deserved.

I believe this series was shot without an audience in England. I think Julie would have done better with her pal Carol Burnett's production company in the States.

The Julie Andrews Hour 1972-73 was made at the ABC studios in Hollywood, usually with an audience. Later on Julie made several TV specials (with Peter Ustinov, Jackie Gleason, Dick van Dyke, Carl Reiner, the Muppets and Perry Como etc) in the mid-1970s at the ATV studios in England.

Chris Norton You could be right about everything except "usually with an audience." I saw these shows when they were new. I saw an audience once, the initial show which may, or may not, have been a pilot. I don't recall seeing an audience again for a Julie show. Some variety shows displayed an audience (Carol Burnett, Andy Williams, Flip Wilson) and some didn't (Dean Martin, Jackie Gleason) but to me the proof is the audio. This episode, like so many others, contains the very artificial laughter and applause that suggest no audience was present.

you cant really compete with a true classically trained singer. Look at Julie singing the high A-flat, you cant even hear Goulet with his large voice, while Julie's voice cuts though them all! 23:32

Great Quality.Where did u get this in this quality? Do u have more from the hour to post please? My Favorite part 23:30-24:00. No one seems to record singing live anymore. Television short changes us because most people tend to lip sync. Anyone watch a predetermined football game lately?

Excruciating from Julie, all sung through the nose. She needs the correct director to put her right. Robert carries on the same way.
@mlchc90047 жыл бұрын
doug foote what?!? Sorry I don't quite hear that! She's got the technique I don't hear any nasal singing there!
@dougfoote70467 жыл бұрын
Her untrained voice can only operate this way. This is a problem with some native English speakers. A fully trained good singer will sing quite differently and to my ear much better. The voice that Julie presents, is a delight to many people, She never moved on from show songs. Julie left a legacy of course, but it might have been so much more.
@mlchc90047 жыл бұрын
doug foote I strongly disagree. Let's agree to disagree!
@daniellemarie3347 жыл бұрын
doug foote I'm sorry, did you just call Julie Andrews an untrained singer!? I'm not sure if you have bad hearing or just not musically trained, but Julie was trained in singing and music in general since the age of seven. There is nothing nasally about her singing voice, and this is coming from a singer with a naturally trained ear, so I hope I know what I'm talking about. You may be mistaking her use of chest singing in "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" for a nasal quality. She has always had perfect diction and a clear, crisp tone while she is singing. I don't mean to be rude, I just get irritated when an incredible talent like Julie Andrews is so grossly overlooked and oversimplified. If you read her memoir, you will find that Julie started her career through her exceptional voice and ability to coloratura her way through any song. Again, I'm sorry if I come across as offensive or insensitive, but Julie has been my idol and role model since I was 5, so I'm really protective of her in a way, along with the fact that music is a very important part of my life.
@dougfoote70467 жыл бұрын
You have said it right about the trained voice and what the listener may hear. Julie may have been taught to sing in this way, and so have many others as well. "Putting it in the nose" does give some control over voice production initially and can be a money spinner for all concerned. By this I mean voice coach, singer, and all the associated theatrical people. Frank Sinatra initially sang this way but later on in quite a different way as he found his way forward. Kylie Minogue has not moved on, and is almost using a whisper together with a mike. I must say that voice technique is a complex field. Have you referred to the You Tube videos where modern coaches talk about and also demonstrate the use of all the the vocal apparatus? This is again, not easy, but is a work for life. If you prefer the Julie Andrews style then nothing may be added. Hollywood used many of this type in blockbusters. They had careers, but do not represent vocal technique to any great depth.
