13:30 I think having a stronger spring for analog is better for making very fine controls on the contrary. It allows you to control small adjustments much better than a lighter spring where a slight push and the stick is already at the edge. The downside is that your thumb tire out faster but generally its negligable in this scenario.
@BluntyTV

You may "think" that in your imaginary scenario, but that's simply not how it WORKS, in the factual world. Source; I've ACTUALLY USED THE Fuckin' THING.

It's literally the opposite of that. Most people do like stiff springs and triggers, but it's for fast activation's sake, at the detriment of precision. A loose spring allows more precision, this is an objective fact.

I literally just ordered one of these today. I felt the same about the 8Bitdo Pro 2 and its' verticality initially, but I got used to it after a week, and now it feels like butter. All of your downsides are completely subjective; they maybe your 'truths', but not everybody else's. The compromise of having 'mushier; analog triggers on Switch is well worth it for the extra compatibility for the PC in my books. I am looking forward to trying it out, and suggest others make up their own minds too. All told though, thanks for the review, it's always interesting hearing another opinion :)

That's such a good point about Monster Hunter and digital l2 r2 triggers. Charge Blade represent! i have their older SN30 Pro model that i really love because of digital triggers and no "legs". this SNES controller shape has been good for me because i have smaller hands. One of the things that may be interesting to explore about the Ultimate is repairability. Previous models of 8bitdo controllers have really been big on being easy to open and repair. they even sell parts from their website.

I ended up ordering an 8bitdo Ultimate Bluetooth and while you're right about the comfort issues I found that they're tolerable enough for daily use. Yeah, it's not as comfortable in the hand as a regular Xbox shell, but the controller itself is incredible and feature-packed. The accuracy of the thumbsticks, with "disable deadzone" option enabled, is unmatched. I can completely eliminate the deadzone on every game, or at worst lower it to 2% or 3%, and that allows incredible accurate micro-adjustments of the cursor position. I also find that the face buttons and the d-pad are exceptional, and incredibly well-made. Overall I find it's the best controller I've ever used, even better than the $200 Razer Wolverines I've bought over the years.

Thank you for this review; as I was on the fence about it. I really wanted this becaue of the 2.4 ghz connectivity (less input lag) for my Switch, but I didn't see many reviews. The only review I saw that mentioned the discomfort of holding it on Nintendo Life and that concerned me as 8bitdo has recently been making awesome controllers; but with hand or wrist cramping. And it wasn't because they were small, but it was the ergonomics. I will wait until they make a better one as this sounds like I would have returned it. Sad, because this controller had the best dock and 2.4 ghz hub solution i ever seen.

I got the wired xbox version of the ultimate controller a few months back. I tried it a little and haven't really used it since. I definitely agree with you about the very vertical design, it really wasn't comfortable for my hands, especially compared to a Series X controller. An issue I had is probably just down to personal preference, but I wasn't a fan of the convex sticks. I prefer the concave xbox designs, where my thumbs sit "within" the top of the stick. But considering I got mine for $45 AUD compared to the $100 I spent on my Series X controller, I can't complain too much. Good HONEST review!

I've seen a few people complain about the vertical nature of the gross and how it hurts their wrists, but I can honestly say, I have no issues, and if it wasn't brought up in reviews,I wouldn't have noticed. I, too, would have liked hair trigger locks to mashes the analog triggers more like the pro controller's, but I got around that by maxing out the dead zone in the triggers. The center buttons don't bother me, and you are actually the first reviewer who's said their placement is an issue. I actually saw one review effete they complimented their placement. To each their own, though. Also, I really appreciate the shorter throw distance of the sticks. I haven't seen the throw distance really addressed in any other review, so I like that you addressed it, even if I disagree with you. In fact, all my friends and family members, whom are all tech needs and gamers too, all like the sticks better than the actual switch controller's. Again, too each their own. I also think this controller has the most perfect d-pad of any controller, the recessed nature again feels great to me, as it's the snappiest and most precise d-pad I've ever used. No imprecise hits when using it. Homely, this is my new main controller and may be the best controller I've used, outside of a couple of nit picks, like the "no hair trigger locks" and only having two back buttons

Agreed that it should have the switch to set the trigger throw between normal and short. Combined with the software to set the sensitivity, I imagine it'd work much better than it did for me on the Xbox Elite controller (and the controller mod you did a while back). But if they're only going to have one, I'm glad it's analog triggers. I plan to use it on other platforms far more than I plan to use it on Switch and digital triggers would be a detriment. I remain baffled as to how Nintendo went from the GameCube triggers to digital triggers. Nintendo, doncha think it's about time you re-joined the rest of the industry and provided analog triggers? I made the mistake of buying Virtua Racing on the Switch eShop... Found it unplayable thanks to digital triggers. If Nintendo had a refund policy, I'd have gotten my money back. I'm glad to hear the dock works well. I had the official first party PS4 dock years ago... That thing was junk. Almost impossible to line up the controller correctly to get it to stay in, let alone charge. Nothing was built in to help guide the controller into the right spot. I think that piece of junk is still buried in a closet somewhere, it didn't stay in my set-up for very long. 18:22 - Oh that's very nice.

And seriously, why the heck can't PlayStation figure out battery life?! With battery life that poor, I'd rather they used AA's like Xbox does, at least then I can quickly swap in a fresh pair (of rechargeable AAs, buying single use alkalines is a big nope) and keep playing instead of having to suddenly wire my controller in. Oh and no, PlayStation fanboys, Sony Simps - buying a second controller to swap to when the battery dies is ridiculous and not at all a reasonable solution to the terrible battery life problem. The controllers need a bigger battery and/or less gimmicks draining said battery. Still don't know why PlayStation only gives the option to dim the LEDs instead of shut them completely off. I don't need them on. They don't do anything. None of them face the TV like they did on PS4 for the camera to see in the like three compatible games. Let me turn them off. The touch pad can show itself the door as well. I can't think of any games outside of PS4 launch window that used it as anything more than a giant button, and aside from Astro's Playroom it's been the same on PS5. Don't need that stupid thing taking up the center of the controller, draining battery to wait to detect touch. Remove it, and then give us back normal sized and easily pressed start and select buttons again. I can never find those tiny, scrawny things on PS4 and PS5 when I need them. Oh I guess I went and started ranting about PlayStation controllers too. Oh well. Stop getting it so wrong so I don't have to, Sony.

So, "8bitdo Fine controller" it is :) I think "Proper" Review would a good description. You seem to have a refined taste in gamepads, which is very relatable and much appreciated in reviews like this. The thing that bothers me the most with this controller (without having tried it) would be the unergonomic grip angle. Youre right; it doesnt look much worse than the Pro controller, but I can certainly imagine how it is. The placement of the system buttons may be odd, but atleast its an improvement over their previous one, the 8bitdo Pro2 layout which has the home button right underneath the thumb joint during regular gameplay. Stiff thumbsticks, now that would be a positive for me personally. Good mention either way. The dpad is interesting, considering how several other reviewers have called it the best dpad since SNES. It doesnt *seem* that recessed, but again I could imagine how it would feel odd. The led strip on charger... It seems powerful enough to illuminate a whole bedroom at night. Would that be a fair assessment? And about that 2.4g usb passthrough in the charging dock... does it also work when connecting the charging dock to the Switch dock, (also setting the Switch to wired controller)? Or is bluetooth the only way to communicate with the Switch?

Idk ergonomics are kind of subjective, right? I find the pro controller forces more of its weight on my middle, ring and pinky fingers than the ultimate controller because the pro controller’s body is angled more steeply and there’s less support from the steeper angle of the handles.

Spot on review. The build quality is not what alot of creators are saying it is. It's lighter than a DS4 and dosen't feel as robust. I hope I can apply some eXtremeRate grips to make it fill my hands a little more so hitting the paddles dosen't feel like an effort. Still, the price is right and in this day & age, that really matters. I needed something with paddles since my Collective Minds Strike Pack finally packed it in after 5 (5!) years of service.

As someone that’s looking for their first Nintendo switch controller, do you think this would be a good buy? A bit of the cons is for using other controllers or the original switch layout and I’m not used to that so I’m not sure it’s really a big con for me. The only other controller I have/use is a ps4 one. I also play on PC (don’t use controller much) but it would be nice to have them both compatible with a switch and PC. I also like that it’s white since it’ll fit my Oled and it’s a bit more colour compared to the Nintendo switch pro controller.

Thinking about different sensor mechanisms in thumbsticks, am I right in recalling the N64 used some sort of optical tracking? It's been a while since I had an N64 controller apart, but I'm pretty sure last time I replaced the stick on one (cos let's face it, that was really a consumable component) that it had some kind of gated comb on it that sat in a slot, definitely not a potentiometer. I'm gonna have to go search that up now and see! This controller certainly seems like an interesting piece of kit, particularly if you jump back and forth between different platforms, but I already own too many blasted controllers as it is 😂 I don't need to go adding more! I actually dont like the layout of the +- home buttons on switch pro controller because it causes me to sometimes accidentally press home button when I want to press + button. I much prefer it like its on the xbox/playstation where home/share butons are in the middle and +-(start/select) are on the sides so if the ultimate controller has them like that its actually a positive for me. For me its not meant to be replacement of switch pro controller but more like a versatile controller that I can use on both pc and switch because I game on both pretty regularly. So far the comfort is the only thing that makes me hesitate getting this controller. Everything else I like about it. I actually want the shoulder buttons to be analog because I would use it on pc a lot too. I like that you can easily switch between 2 devices (pc and switch in my case) without having to resync everytime and the charging dock seems its easy to dock it in without having to readjust it to make sure its docked in. So based on this review the only negative for me seems to be the comfort (which is actually a pretty big deal) but I like everything else about this controller so far including the things you see as negatives.

Didn’t give it a super high A+ score 2. Criticized the comfort 3. Directly compared it to the PowerA Fusion Pro 4. Didn’t recommend it over the first party switch pro controller Very much appreciate seeing criticisms that counter the mainstream review talking points. My own switch pro controller has started drifting (after ~2000 hours of playtime over the last several years) and was considering this for the Hall effect sticks, but the verticality is definitely making me reconsider - I find the Xbox controller too wide for my natural grip and the switch pro a little too vertical. If it’s more vertical than the switch pro, then I can see there definitely being wrist issues down the line

I've been through three 8bitdo controllers and the pads of those buttons tend to rip, especially with more intense games. When they rip, they will get stuck sometimes or won't rise back up at all. The face button pads are easy to replace since they use pads similar to SNES controllers, but I don't know if there's a similar pad for the shoulder buttons and have just scavenged the pads from my older 8bitdo controllers. They apparently used to let you buy replacement pads if you live in the USA, but I don't know if that's true anymore.

They have replacement membranes on their shop, and if you look in their AliExpress store you can probably find them available with worldwide shipping options. While making sure they were still available I noticed they have Xbox layout AXBY buttons available now for the Ultimate controller.

I just don’t understand 8bitdo’s thinking behind this ‘ultimate’ controller. Although it can work with a PC, it’s going to get used more as a Switch controller, but you don’t get HD Rumble or NFC. Also, not having digital triggers is actually a problem. So, it’s clearly not the best for Switch and because of the face button layout it’s not great for PC use either. So what makes it ultimate? Quick question, can it turn the Switch on?

@orosaasoro1 Жыл бұрын
the thing about the triggers is 8bitdo allows you to change it in the software from an analogue to a simple press. so that is not really an issue. (just have to find it in the software) outside of that, good review!

making the initiation distance shorter on an analog trigger IS, IN ABSOLUTELY ZERO WAYS, the same as a real short throw digital trigger. Not even CLOSE to the same feel.

@@BluntyTV oh then maybe I am thinking of the older software, I have a 8bitdo pro 2, and it a little strange but you can change it to only activate at the end of the trigger pull. maybe they pull that out in the new one. which makes me a little sad if that is the case. but again, great review.

Bro i love your honesty their I have the same controller but different color (the black one) . i see how big your hand is I bet its giving you more trouble in that department than me. I have small to average size hand and I had no issue with it. I also have xbox one, switch pro, and ps4 controller and your right that I can feel the difference at the start, but the more I use 8bitdo the more it start to feel natural. I still think its miles better than switch controller. I love how clicky the directional and regular buttons are. I played fighting games with it and it worked very well for me. I still think your review is spot on and these issues do exist especially if someone has a big hand. I have a dusty switch because i use pc more often and this work very well on Pc. I recommend you try rewasd app if you want it to connect bluetooth via pc. I believe this is the best controller with hall effect sensor, but i cant wait to see how kingkong 3 or the next version of this one will look like. I bet they will be worth a purchase

I'll be honest, I bought the GameSir G7 and it was super uncomfortable (despite being raved about by others; not Blunty). I held off buying the 8bitdo Ultimate Bluetooth because of reviews like this. But in the end the 8bitdo Ultimate Bluetooth is super comfortable for me. I'd suggest it's potentially a big hand (Blunty) vs small-medium hand (me) preference - among the other individual preferences.

Thanks for this review! I also dislike the PS5 Controller and it helps me to decide not to waste my money. I would be interested in your thoughts on some of the fancy third party controllers(and the official PS5 Elite controller) coming soon. For me the PS5 controller is so bad I bought a new PS4 controller to use as much as I can while playing PS5 since most of my current games are PS4 games technically. I would hope they adjust the controller to be better as the build quality and size just suck. Thanks!!

There is a reason I always come to you for tech reviews & have done for years. I recently started using Huel products & the only videos I saw on it that didn't feel like some disingenuous attempt to sell me something was Little Tipple's "Normal Person's Review" series. Sure sometimes people say "honest" when its anything but. But the genuine reviews always have a very different feel to the "OMG GUYS THIS IS SO AMAZING" fake enthusiasm bullshit everything else has. So don't worry about being passive aggressive. We all know what you mean & its less likely to start needless drama.

Nobody has mentioned the grip differences besides you. That "slight" difference would make the controller nigh-unusable for me due to wrist issues. I can't use a gamecube controller for more than a few minutes without a flare up and this controller seems to have similar-ish ergonomics. For competitive smash though, the switch pro controller just isn't reliable enough out of the box. For people like me, the ergonomics of a controller is one of the most important aspects of it. Thank you for highlighting the grip differences, even if it might not have seemed like a huge deal.

Thats interesting because for me the gamecube controller is one of the most comfortable controller Ive ever used. The only issue with gamecube controller for are the sticks as they can be hard on the thumbs during intense gaming sessions while pro controller sticks are much softer. But the rest of the ergonomics when it comes to hands were perfect for me on gamecube.

How's the Rumble of this controller while using it with Nintendo Switch? I ask because on the 8Bitdo pro2 that I have, its Rumble is super weak sometimes I cant notice it while playing Persona 5 Royal and some other game.

I have a ps5 and I don't have any significant complaints about the dualsense controller. Sure the d pad could be better, but I deal with it, because no other controller has the haptics and adaptive triggers that dual sense has, and the ergonomics are fine imo.

8BitDo's membranes are in my opinion the best ones out there when it comes to feeling like the old controller membranes from the 8- and 16-bit generation (not too stiff, not too mushy), but they're also the weakest. They break after a few months no exception. Discovered that a bit late though, now I have a NES-, SNES-, MD-, and Pro 2 controller from 8BitDo which have all been fitted with new (too stiff but durable) membranes. If they make their membranes more durable I'd wholeheartedly recommend their controllers for "retro" gaming!

I'm quite happy with mine. I've also had other 8-bit do controllers and haven't experienced the membrane issues others have reported, but maybe I'm just lucky. I haven't tried a side-by-side comparison with my Switch Pro, and I don't feel an overwhelming need to since I got the Ultimate primarily for PC gaming, but I would appreciate being able to use it as a 2p Switch controller if the necessity arose.

a fair review, I agree on preferring digital triggers. Other than that I don't have an issue with anything you mentioned. In fact the only thing keeping this controller from being "Ultimate" to me is the complete lack of gyro control on PC. I absolutely love gyro control and to have a controller that has functional gyro on Switch that is disabled on PC is absolutely ridiculous, especially for its price. The Switch Pro-Con and even the DualSense are arguably better controllers simply because gyro works on PC with little issue.

Thanks for this review, great work! I was considering getting this, hoping it'd be an improvement to my Pro 2 controller, but it sounds like it's the same or worse so I cancelled my order. I don't like how tight the thumbsticks are on those either. And it seems like this 'ultimate' controller has a lot of limitations or poor design choices, especially for the price. It does look nice, but usability is more important!
